Chapter 10 - The Ring That Opened the Last Door

Luca didn't wait for another message.
He ordered Marcus to take Vanessa and Emily to the underground security room while he went upstairs.
Elena's bedroom door stood open.
The nurse was gone.
The curtains moved in the cold air from the broken window.
On the floor lay a small velvet pouch.
Luca picked it up.
Inside was the original wedding ring.
The second ring.
The one Emily had found beneath Elena's pillow.
A small key was attached to its inner band.
Luca turned it over.
A new engraving had been hidden beneath the first.
For the child who survived.
He stared at the words.
Then he understood.
The ring wasn't merely a piece of jewelry.
It was a key.
He returned to the chapel and examined the altar. Beneath the stone base, he found a narrow lock.
The ring's tiny key fitted perfectly.
A compartment opened.
Inside was a sealed envelope and a photograph.
The photograph showed Sofia holding two newborn babies.
Elena stood beside her.
And Alessandro was standing behind them.
On the back were the words:
October 3. Two sons. One daughter. Three lives destroyed by one lie.
Luca read the sentence again.
Two sons.
One daughter.
He had spent the night believing there were two children involved.
But there had been three.
The envelope contained a letter written by Elena.
Luca,
If you have found this, then I have failed to protect you from the truth.
Alessandro did not have two children. He had three.
Adrian was born first. You were born second. The third child was a girl.
Her name was Margaret's daughter.
Your father ordered her disappearance because he believed she would inherit the trust and expose the crimes that built his empire.
Luca's hands tightened around the paper.
The final line was written in a trembling hand.
The girl is not Emily.
He heard footsteps behind him.
Sofia stood at the chapel entrance.
She looked older than ever, but her eyes were sharp.
"Where is the letter?"
Luca folded it.
"You lied to me."
Sofia sighed.
"I protected you."
"From what?"
"From the truth about your father."
"Where is the third child?"
Sofia stepped closer.
"Dead."
"You're lying."
Her face changed.
"You have no idea what Alessandro did to us."
Luca raised his gun.
"Then tell me."
Sofia stared at him for several seconds.
Finally, she spoke.
"The third child was taken from the hospital by Margaret. But Margaret didn't raise her. She gave her to someone who could protect her."
"Who?"
Sofia looked toward the chapel doors.
"Your father's most trusted enemy."
A gunshot interrupted her.
Sofia fell.
Luca turned toward the entrance.
A man stood in the doorway.
Adrian.
His weapon was still raised.
"You should have stayed out of this."
Luca aimed at him.
"Put it down."
Adrian laughed.
"You're still protecting people who destroyed our family."
"Mother didn't destroy anything."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Which mother?"
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Adrian lowered his weapon.
"I know where the girl is."
Luca stared.
"Who?"
Adrian looked at him.
"The third child."
Before Luca could respond, Marcus rushed into the chapel.
"Boss! Emily's gone!"
Luca spun around.
"What?"
"Someone took her from the security room."
Vanessa appeared behind Marcus, crying.
"I tried to stop them."
"Who took her?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know. But they left this."
She handed Luca a folded photograph.
It showed Emily standing beside an older woman outside a hospital.
On the back was a single sentence:
Ask Margaret why she never told her daughter about the woman who gave birth to her.
Luca looked at Adrian.
"Where is Emily?"
Adrian shook his head.
"I don't know."
For the first time, he seemed genuinely afraid.
"Whoever took her knows something neither of us knows."
Hours later, Luca found Emily's phone inside the old family chapel.
There was one saved voice message.
It was from an unknown number.
He pressed play.
A woman's voice filled the silent room.
"Emily, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry. Your mother loved you, but she wasn't the woman who gave birth to you."
Luca looked at the phone.
The message continued.
"And the woman who gave birth to you is not Sofia Bell."
A pause.
Then the voice whispered:
"She's the woman who has been sitting beside you at the hospital for the last three years."
The recording ended.
Luca slowly lowered the phone.
Elena.
His mother.
The woman he had believed was only his adoptive mother.
The woman who had protected him, raised him, and hidden the truth.
She was Emily's biological mother.
But if that was true, who had taken Emily?
And why had Elena spent her entire life pretending she was someone else's child?
Three days later, the Moretti mansion was quieter than it had been in decades.
Adrian had disappeared.
Sofia survived the shooting but refused to speak.
Vanessa left Boston, carrying the original wedding ring and a letter from her grandmother.
Richard Cole was arrested after Marcus delivered the recovered financial records to federal investigators.
Elena was still recovering in the hospital.
Luca visited her every morning.
And every morning, he asked the same question.
"Where is Emily?"
She gave him the same answer.
"I don't know."
On the fourth morning, a nurse handed Luca a small envelope addressed to him.
There was no return address.
Inside was a photograph of Emily sitting in a sunny garden.
She looked healthy.
She was smiling.
On the back, someone had written:
She's safe. Stop looking for her.
Luca turned the photograph over again.
A second piece of paper slipped out.
It contained a sentence written in handwriting he recognized immediately.
His father's.
If Emily is alive, then the real heir is still out there.
Luca stared at the words.
Then he looked at the empty chair beside Elena's hospital bed.
For the first time, he understood that the second wedding ring had never been the greatest secret in the Moretti family.
It had only been the first clue.
And somewhere beyond Boston, someone was still wearing the first ring.
May you like
Someone who knew exactly what happened on October 3.
THE END — FOR NOW.
