Chapter 1 - The Ring That Should Have Been Buried

The engagement dinner at the Moretti mansion was supposed to be perfect.
Eighty guests filled the marble ballroom beneath crystal chandeliers. Champagne flowed, a string quartet played near the staircase, and Vanessa Hart stood beside Luca Moretti in a crimson gown, smiling like a woman who already owned the house.
But upstairs, in the quiet bedroom of Luca’s mother, Emily Carter found something that could destroy the evening.
She was changing the sheets when her hand brushed against a small tear beneath the pillow.
Something hard was hidden inside.
Emily stopped.
She carefully lifted the pillow and felt along the seam. A few seconds later, she found a loose section of fabric and pulled out a small velvet pouch.
Inside was a wedding ring.
Not an ordinary ring.
A gold band with a tiny diamond set into its center.
Emily had seen that ring before.
Three years earlier, she had watched Luca Moretti bury his father, Don Alessandro Moretti. During the funeral, Luca had stood beside the open grave, holding his father's wedding ring before placing it inside the coffin.
Emily remembered the way his hands had trembled.
She remembered him whispering something before the coffin was lowered.
And she remembered the ring.
This one was identical.
Emily turned it over.
The inside was engraved with two initials.
A.M.
Her stomach tightened.
She was still staring at it when the bedroom door opened.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
"What are you doing?"
Emily immediately closed her fingers around the ring.
"Changing Mrs. Moretti's sheets."
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Then why are you standing there?"
Emily lowered her gaze.
"I found something inside the pillow."
Vanessa stepped closer.
"What?"
Emily hesitated.
Then she opened her hand.
The moment Vanessa saw the ring, her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
She quickly reached for it.
"Give me that."
Emily pulled her hand back.
"Mrs. Moretti should see it first."
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"Excuse me?"
Emily remained calm.
"It was hidden in her pillow."
Vanessa stepped into the room and shut the door behind her.
"Listen carefully. You are a maid in this house. You don't decide who gets to see what."
She extended her hand again.
"Give me the ring."
Emily looked at the jewelry.
Then at Vanessa.
"I think Mr. Moretti should have it."
Vanessa's face hardened.
"Are you trying to get yourself fired?"
Emily said nothing.
Vanessa grabbed her wrist.
"I said give it to me."
The ring slipped from Emily's fingers.
It struck the marble floor.
Both women looked down.
Before Vanessa could reach it, Emily bent and picked it up.
Then she walked toward the door.
Vanessa followed.
"Emily!"
But the maid didn't stop.
She descended the staircase with the ring concealed in her palm.
At the bottom, Luca Moretti stood beside the fireplace, speaking with two business associates.
His black suit was perfectly tailored. His expression was unreadable.
Emily approached him.
"Mr. Moretti?"
Luca turned.
"What is it?"
Emily opened her hand.
"I found this in your mother's pillow."
His eyes dropped to the ring.
For one brief second, the entire room seemed to disappear from his face.
He stopped speaking.
One of his associates noticed.
"Everything all right, Luca?"
Luca didn't answer.
He took the ring from Emily.
Then he turned it over.
His thumb brushed the engraving.
A.M.
His father's initials.
Luca's jaw tightened.
"Where exactly did you find this?"
"Inside the pillow, sir."
"Who else has seen it?"
Emily glanced toward the staircase.
Vanessa was standing there.
Watching.
Luca followed her gaze.
"What are you doing here?"
Vanessa descended slowly.
"I was helping Emily."
Emily remained silent.
Luca looked at the ring again.
Then he noticed something.
The engraving wasn't finished.
There was a date beneath the initials.
A date he had never seen before.
His father's wedding anniversary was June 14.
The date engraved inside the ring was October 3.
Luca's fingers tightened around the gold band.
"Where did this come from?"
Vanessa forced a laugh.
"How should I know? Your mother has a thousand old things."
Luca looked at her.
"That's not an answer."
She stepped closer.
"Maybe it's an old piece of jewelry. Why are you making such a scene?"
Luca didn't respond.
He turned toward the staircase.
"Get my mother."
A few minutes later, Elena Moretti appeared in her wheelchair, accompanied by the family's longtime nurse.
She looked at her son.
"What happened?"
Luca crouched in front of her.
Then he placed the ring in her hand.
"Do you recognize this?"
Elena stared at it.
Her fingers began to tremble.
Vanessa's smile faded.
Luca noticed.
"Mother?"
Elena slowly turned the ring over.
She looked at the initials.
Then at the date.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"No..."
Luca leaned closer.
"What is it?"
Elena looked up at him.
Then she glanced toward Vanessa.
The entire ballroom had gone quiet.
Finally, Elena spoke.
"Your father gave that to someone before he married me."
Luca froze.
Vanessa took a step backward.
And Emily noticed something else.
Elena wasn't looking at the ring anymore.
She was staring at Vanessa's left hand.
At the wedding ring she wore.
The ring Vanessa had claimed belonged to her grandmother.
The same ring that suddenly looked almost identical to the one Elena was holding.
Luca slowly turned toward his fiancée.
"Vanessa..."
She opened her mouth.
But before she could speak, Elena grabbed her son's wrist.
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"Don't ask her."
Luca looked back at his mother.
"Why?"
Elena's eyes filled with terror.
"Because the woman your father gave that ring to..."
She stopped.
Then she looked directly at Emily.
May you like
"...is still alive."
And Emily was the only person in the room who knew where the second ring had been hidden.
