Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

A gunshot shattered the air.

Elena braced for the impact, but the bullet didn't hit her.

Instead, Salvatore Rossi’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying shock. A neat, red hole appeared in the center of his throat. He let out a wet, gurgling gasp, dropping his silver .45 as he collapsed onto the splintered threshold.

Behind Salvatore, standing in the ruined corridor with smoking submachine guns, were Marco and three heavily armed Moretti loyalists.

The two remaining mercenary gunmen tried to turn, but Marco’s team opened fire, cutting them down in a brutal, deafening three-second sweep. The bodies hit the floor with dull, heavy thuds.

The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the hiss of rain outside the steel shutters and Dante’s ragged breathing.

Marco stepped over the bodies, his eyes sweeping the study before resting on Elena, who was still holding her gun raised, her arms rigid as steel.

“Gun down, Elena,” Marco said gently, lowering his weapon. “It’s over. Salvatore’s crew downstairs has been neutralized.”

Elena lowered the gun slowly, her hands finally giving in to violent tremors. She dropped to her knees beside Dante, whose eyes were barely half-open, glazed with fever and blood loss.

“Dante... look at me,” she pleaded, cradling his head in her lap. “Marco’s here. It’s clear. Stay awake!”

Dante looked up into her tear-streaked face. His hand weakly reached up, his fingers brushing the curve of her jaw, leaving a faint streak of blood against her pale skin.

“You... didn't run,” he whispered, his voice faint as an autumn leaf.

“You’re stuck with me, you idiot,” she choked out, pressing her forehead against his. “Now stop talking.”

Marco knelt beside them, pressing two fingers to Dante’s carotid pulse. His face darkened. “The suture tore the subclavian graft. He’s bleeding internally. We have to move him to the subterranean bunker—the city hospitals are crawling with federal agents and Rossi’s remaining soldiers.”

“What about my mother?” Elena asked, panic rising again.

“She’s already in the armored ambulance en route to the private airfield,” Marco replied, motioning for two guards to lift Dante onto a stretcher. “If Dante doesn't make it onto that plane by dawn, the FBI takes everyone into custody. Bennett made a federal plea deal twenty minutes ago.”

Elena stood up, wiping the tears from her face, her jaw tightening. “What deal?”

“He traded Dante for immunity,” Marco said grimly as they rushed Dante’s stretcher down the back service stairs. “Bennett handed over twenty years of syndicate tax records. The federal judge signed a total asset forfeiture order. As of sunrise, the government seizes Moretti Manor, the bank accounts, the docks—everything. If we stay on US soil, Dante spends the rest of his life in ADX Florence. If he survives the night.”

They reached the hidden basement exit, where an armored Mercedes van stood waiting with its engine running.

Elena climbed inside, sitting beside the emergency paramedic who immediately hooked Dante to three units of packed red blood cells. Dante’s hand remained limp on the stretcher, his vital monitor beeping in erratic, shallow spikes.

The van accelerated violently, tearing through the estate’s underground drainage tunnel and bursting out onto an overgrown service road bordering Lake Michigan.

Through the rear window, Elena watched the distant silhouette of Moretti Manor. Flashing red and blue lights were already swarming the front gates—the FBI raid had begun.

The empire had fallen. The money, the chandeliers, the marble halls that had terrified the city for generations—all of it was being swallowed by sirens and steel tape.

Elena looked down at Dante’s pale, chiseled face. The fearsome Mafia Boss was gone. Stripped of his guards, his fortune, and his power, he was just a broken man who had bled himself dry to right a wrong his ancestors committed.

She took his cold hand, interlocking her fingers with his.

“You gave up everything for me,” she whispered to the empty air of the speeding van. “Now it’s my turn to save you.”

The van screeched to a halt at a private hangar near Gary, Indiana.

A sleek Gulfstream jet sat on the tarmac, its engines whining as they spun up to taxi speed. An ambulance was already parked beside the boarding ramp—Elena saw her mother being carefully transferred into the cabin by private flight nurses.

“Go, Elena!” Marco yelled, throwing a duffel bag of untraceable cash and three falsified passports over his shoulder. “Take the Boss and get in the air! The airspace closes in fifteen minutes!”

Elena helped guide Dante’s gurney up the hydraulic lift into the jet’s luxurious cabin.

The doors sealed with a heavy hiss. Seconds later, the jet surged down the runway, pressing them back into their seats as the nose lifted into the stormy black clouds.

Chicago disappeared beneath them.

Elena sat beside Dante’s bed in the private stateroom, watching the steady green glow of the heart monitor. His pulse was stabilizing, the blood transfusion slowly restoring warmth to his fingertips.

As the plane leveled out at thirty thousand feet, Dante’s eyelids fluttered open.

He turned his head slowly, his dark eyes focusing on Elena sitting beside him in the dim cabin light. He looked at the cabin window, at the sea of clouds beneath them, and then back to her hand holding his.

“Where... are we?” he murmured.

“Somewhere they can’t touch you,” Elena said softly, leaning down until her lips brushed his forehead. “Now rest, Dante. You don't have to carry the world anymore.”

A faint, peaceful smile touched Dante’s lips before he closed his eyes and drifted into deep, healing sleep.

Elena leaned back, letting out a long, ragged exhale. For the first time in three months, she felt the crushing weight lift from her shoulders.

Then her phone buzzed in her pocket.

It was an unknown number, routed through an encrypted satellite link.

Elena frowned, unlocking the screen.

A single video message appeared.

She tapped play. The video showed an interrogation room in downtown Chicago. Vanessa Bennett sat at a steel table, looking directly into the camera with a sickening, victorious grin.

“Did you really think Dante was the one who ordered your father’s murder, Elena?” Vanessa’s voice whispered through the speaker. “Check your mother’s maiden name on the trust deed. Dante didn't rescue you to make amends. He took you because your mother is the real head of the Carter syndicate—and she’s the one who ordered the hit on your father.”

The video cut to black.

Elena sat frozen in the sky, her blood turning to ice, as the door to the forward cabin opened—and her mother, Margaret Carter, walked in, standing completely upright, entirely unassisted, with no IV in her arm.
