Chapter 5 - The Anatomy of a Trap

“Dante, look at me! Keep your eyes open!”
Elena’s fingers sank into the sodden fabric of his shirt, desperately trying to apply pressure to the entry wound beneath his collarbone. The heat of his blood was terrifying against the freezing rain.
“Elena... listen,” Dante wheezed, his voice losing its gravelly strength, turning thin and reedy. He reached down to his belt, unhooking a small, encrypted key card. “The ambulance... the driver is Marco’s brother. He’s been on the inside since midnight. Bennett thinks he bought him... he didn't.”
Elena’s eyes widened. “What?”
“The monitors... they aren't off,” Dante whispered, coughing harshly as pain seized his chest. “Your mother was moved to a safehouse in Oak Park two hours ago. The woman in that ambulance... is a decoy.”
Before Elena could comprehend the revelation, gunfire erupted across the pier.
Marco and the Moretti strike team didn't charge blindly. From the shadows between the towering freight containers, red laser dots painted the chest of every mercenary in Bennett’s perimeter.
“Drop your weapons!” Marco’s voice boomed through an external loudspeaker. “State Police convoy intercepted at the bridge by Federal Bureau of Investigation! You have no backup, Senator!”
Senator Bennett spun around, panic shattering his smug facade. “What? That’s impossible! Captain Davies assured me—”
The ambulance driver’s door swung open. A burly man in tactical gear stepped out, holding a shotgun leveled directly at Bennett’s spine. “Davies is in federal custody, Senator. Drop the iron.”
Vanessa screamed, retreating toward the water’s edge as her father’s paid gunmen threw down their weapons, raising their hands into the blinding rain.
Around the corner of the container, Elena barely heard the shouting. All she could see was Dante’s skin turning an alarming shade of gray under the harsh dock lights.
“Stay with me, Dante!” she pleaded, tears mixing with the rain streaming down her face. “You hear me? You don't get to die after lying to me! You don't get to be the hero now!”
Dante’s eyes fluttered, his hand weakly finding her wrist, gripping it with the faint remnants of his strength. “Had to... make sure... you were safe from them. From me.”
“Shut up! Save your breath!” Elena yelled at the top of her lungs, turning back toward the apron. “Marco! He’s hit! I need a field kit now!”
Within seconds, Marco was on his knees beside them, his heavy hands tearing Dante’s shirt open to expose the clean through-and-through puncture near the sub-clavian artery.
“Pneumothorax,” Marco muttered grimly, pulling a chest seal and a 14-gauge decompression needle from his tactical vest. “Lung is collapsing. Elena, hold this dressing against his shoulder. Hard!”
Elena didn't hesitate. The domestic maid who had spent the last three years nursing her mother through ICU emergencies took over. Her hands stopped shaking. She jammed the plastic valve against the wound, bracing Dante’s shoulder against her knee while Marco drove the needle into the second intercostal space.
A sharp hiss of trapped air escaped the cavity.
Dante gasped, his back arching off the pavement as oxygen flooded back into his bloodstream. His eyelids fluttered, his knuckles whitening as he grabbed Elena’s arm, pulling her down until her ear brushed his lips.
“Elena...” he murmured.
“I’m here. I’m right here.”
“The third floor... of the manor,” Dante whispered, every word a brutal effort. “Behind the painting of my grandfather. A safe... code is your mother’s birthday.”
Elena froze. “Why my mother’s birthday?”
“Everything... I built,” Dante’s voice faded to a rasp, his head lolling to the side as his eyes slipped shut. “It was already yours.”
“Dante! Dante!”
Marco checked his neck pulse. “He’s in shock, but he’s alive. Transport van, now! Move!”
Two enforcers lifted Dante onto a portable stretcher, rushing him toward the second SUV. Elena scrambled to follow, but a cold voice cut through the chaos behind her.
“You think this makes you a queen?”
Elena stopped, turning around.
Vanessa Bennett stood flanked by two federal agents in dark raincoats who had just snapped steel handcuffs around her wrists. Her designer gown was soaked in mud, her hair plastered to her neck, but her glare remained razor-sharp.
“You think he loved you?” Vanessa sneered, spitting blood onto the asphalt. “Dante didn't buy that hospital file to save your mother, Elena. Look at the date on the deed of the manor! Look at who owned this city before Dante’s father took it!”
Elena walked slowly toward the handcuffed heiress, the rain washing the blood from her fingers. “What are you talking about?”
Vanessa laughed hysterically as the agents pulled her toward a federal sedan. “Ask him about the Carter Shipping Line! Ask him why your father really died twenty years ago, you stupid girl!”
The words hit Elena like a physical blow.
May you like
Her father hadn't died of an accidental drowning at the Chicago docks. He had been a dockmaster. A Carter.
Elena stood frozen in the downpour as the federal siren began to wail, Dante’s words echoing in her skull: “Behind the painting... everything I built was already yours.”
