Chapter 6 - The Heartbeat

The hospital corridor was too bright.

Adrian hated it immediately.

For twenty-two minutes, no one told him anything.

Grant had escaped through a service corridor during the confusion.

Adrian didn't care.

Not yet.

Elena was behind two white doors.

That was the entire world.

Lucas sat nearby with blood on his sleeve.

“Her arm was a graze.”

Adrian said nothing.

“The abdominal pain could be stress.”

Nothing.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

“You can't control this.”

Adrian looked at him.

“I know.”

It was perhaps the first time in his life he had admitted those words without anger.

A doctor finally appeared.

“Mr. Vale?”

Adrian stood.

“Your wife is stable.”

His lungs worked again.

“And the baby?”

The doctor smiled slightly.

“Also stable. Strong fetal heartbeat.”

Adrian looked away.

His eyes burned.

The doctor continued explaining the wound and monitoring plan.

Adrian heard perhaps half of it.

Strong heartbeat.

Those two words repeated in his mind.

When Elena allowed him into the room, she was pale and exhausted.

He remained beside the door.

“You can come closer,” she said.

He approached the bed.

“Doctor said the baby is okay.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then Adrian lowered himself into the chair.

“I heard what Grant said.”

“Which part?”

“All of it.”

Elena studied him.

“He was wrong about one thing.”

“What?”

“That I love power more than you.”

She said nothing.

Adrian continued.

“He was wrong about what I feel. But he was right about how I behaved.”

That distinction mattered.

“I loved you badly.”

Elena's eyes softened despite herself.

“I kept thinking if I controlled every danger around you, I'd never lose you. Eventually I controlled everything except the thing that mattered.”

“Trust.”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at her bandaged arm.

“I won't ask you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

“I haven't earned the right.”

“No.”

“I'll still spend however long it takes earning the possibility.”

A tiny smile touched her mouth.

“That sounded rehearsed.”

“I had twenty-two minutes in the hallway.”

She laughed.

It hurt, so she stopped.

But Adrian heard it.

And something inside him that had been frozen since Thursday began to thaw.

The following morning brought another surprise.

Roland Pierce walked into a Connecticut FBI field office with an attorney.

He wanted immunity.

Grant had turned on him.

Roland handed investigators financial records, encrypted communications, and recordings tying Grant to the ambush.

But he also revealed something worse.

Senator Bellamy had access to federal intelligence.

Grant had not merely corrupted Adrian's organization.

He had received information from inside a federal task force.

That meant every conventional protection plan could be compromised.

Adrian made a decision.

He would dismantle his own empire before allowing Grant to use it against Elena.

He called his captains.

Illegal operations ceased immediately.

Weapons routes closed.

Cash businesses were separated from legitimate companies.

Records were preserved rather than burned.

Lucas stared at him afterward.

“Your father would rise from the grave to kill you.”

“My father is why I spent twenty years believing fear was the same thing as safety.”

“And now?”

Adrian looked through the hospital window at Elena.

“Now I have something worth becoming different for.”

But Elena overheard.

Later, she asked him, “Are you doing this for me?”

“For myself.”

She waited.

“And the baby,” he admitted.

“Better answer.”

Three days later, Elena was released.

Adrian expected her to return to the coastal house.

Instead she requested an apartment.

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

His instincts screamed no.

He ignored them.

“I'll arrange security you approve.”

“I want Lucas.”

Lucas blinked.

Adrian looked offended.

“You trust him more than me?”

“At the moment?”

Lucas coughed to hide a laugh.

Adrian sighed.

“Fair.”

Elena moved into a secure apartment overlooking the harbor.

Adrian visited only when invited.

Sometimes they discussed Grant.

Sometimes the baby.

Sometimes nothing important.

One evening, Elena handed him an ultrasound photograph.

Adrian stared at the tiny shape.

“That's our child?”

“That is generally what they photograph at obstetric appointments.”

He ignored her sarcasm.

He touched the edge carefully.

“Can I keep this?”

Elena nodded.

Adrian looked at it for a long time.

Then his phone vibrated.

Lucas.

They had found Grant.

Or rather, Grant wanted to be found.

A video arrived.

Grant sat inside Adrian's study at the Vale estate.

Behind him burned the original evidence folder.

“Come home,” Grant said into the camera.

“Let's finish what your wife started.”

Then the camera shifted.

Someone was tied to a chair beside him.

Malcolm Reed.

May you like

Grant raised a pistol to Malcolm's head.

“You have until midnight.”
