Chapter 3 - The Man Behind the Folder

Adrian woke beneath broken plaster.

His ears screamed.

Someone was dragging him.

Lucas.

“Move!”

Smoke rolled through the hallway.

The explosion had come from the bathroom wall rather than the room itself, saving Adrian from the worst of the blast.

It had not been intended primarily to kill him.

It had been intended to destroy evidence.

Outside, Adrian wiped blood from his mouth.

“Elena?”

“No body,” Lucas said. “No sign she was inside when it blew.”

That was enough.

Adrian stood.

“Get Roland.”

Roland Pierce was gone.

His Manhattan apartment was empty. His office safe had been cleared. His private aircraft had filed a flight plan for Montreal but never departed.

Then Malcolm called.

“I found the handwriting problem.”

Adrian listened.

“The note wasn't handwritten.”

“It looks handwritten.”

“It was generated from samples of Elena's writing. Whoever made it had access to dozens of pages she wrote personally.”

Adrian understood.

His home.

His files.

His marriage.

Someone had been studying Elena from inside the Vale organization.

By evening, another discovery arrived.

The Moretti family had not ordered the Whitmore ambush.

Their boss, Carlo Moretti, requested a meeting.

Adrian nearly refused.

Then Moretti sent him one photograph.

Grant Mercer shaking hands with Roland Pierce.

Beside them stood a man Adrian recognized.

Senator Thomas Bellamy.

For twelve years, Bellamy had presented himself as one of Adrian's useful political acquaintances.

More importantly, Bellamy chaired a federal committee investigating organized crime along the Northeast corridor.

Adrian met Moretti in an abandoned church in Queens.

Carlo Moretti was sixty-three, silver-haired, and irritatingly calm.

“You blamed my family,” Carlo said.

“You benefited from the assumption.”

“Yes.”

“At least you're honest.”

“Age makes lying exhausting.”

Carlo slid a folder across the pew.

Grant had been moving money.

Not thousands.

Millions.

He had built a parallel network through shell corporations, compromised Vale captains, and government contractors.

The ambush was supposed to kill Adrian.

Elena was supposed to take the blame.

“And after I died?”

“Grant becomes acting head,” Carlo said. “Then he avenges you by eliminating your traitorous widow.”

Adrian's fingers tightened.

“Why Elena?”

“Because she found something.”

Adrian looked up.

“What?”

“That is the question you should have asked before throwing her away.”

Adrian almost struck him.

Almost.

Instead, he stood.

Carlo smiled without humor.

“Good. You're learning.”

That night, Lucas finally found Keller.

Alive.

Barely.

He had been dumped behind an abandoned warehouse in Bridgeport.

At the hospital, Keller struggled to speak through cracked lips.

“She got away.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“Elena?”

Keller nodded.

“They boxed us in. Two SUVs. Mrs. Vale realized first.”

“What happened?”

“She told me not to stop.”

Keller swallowed painfully.

“They forced us into the barrier. I lost control. She crawled out the passenger side before they reached us.”

“Where did she go?”

“I don't know.”

Then Keller remembered something.

“She said one name.”

“What name?”

“Sarah.”

Adrian knew only one Sarah Elena trusted enough to run to.

Dr. Sarah Mitchell.

Her college roommate.

An obstetrician in Vermont.

By midnight, Adrian was driving north.

Meanwhile, 190 miles away, Elena Vale sat beneath a wool blanket in a farmhouse kitchen while Sarah cleaned a cut on her temple.

“You need a hospital.”

“No hospitals.”

“Elena.”

“If Grant has access to Adrian's people, he can access hospital records.”

Sarah stopped.

Elena pressed one hand to her abdomen.

The baby had been fine at the emergency examination Sarah performed after Elena arrived.

But Elena wasn't.

Not emotionally.

She had spent six years believing Adrian Vale was the safest place in her world.

One folder had taught her otherwise.

Sarah sat opposite her.

“Do you still love him?”

Elena laughed, and then unexpectedly cried.

“That isn't the problem.”

“What is?”

“I don't trust him.”

Sarah said nothing.

Elena wiped her cheek.

“Love is useless if the person holding your heart can be convinced you're a monster by somebody with a printer.”

A vehicle approached outside.

Elena froze.

Headlights swept across the kitchen.

Sarah reached for her phone.

Elena stood.

“No.”

A black SUV stopped outside.

Then another.

Adrian stepped from the first.

Elena stared through the window.

For one horrible second, relief overwhelmed everything else.

Then memory returned.

The folder.

His cold expression.

I need you to leave.

Adrian approached the porch alone.

Elena opened the door before he knocked.

He stopped.

They stared at each other.

Adrian's face was bruised from the explosion.

Elena's temple was bandaged.

Neither moved.

His gaze fell involuntarily to her stomach.

There was almost nothing visible beneath her sweater.

But now he knew.

His eyes filled with something she had never seen in them before.

Shame.

“I found the test.”

“I know.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

No excuses.

No explanation.

Just yes.

Adrian swallowed.

“I came to bring you somewhere safe.”

Elena looked at the armed vehicles.

“I was safe until you arrived with an army.”

His face tightened.

“Grant is behind the ambush.”

“I guessed.”

“Roland helped him.”

“That I didn't know.”

Adrian stepped closer, then stopped himself.

“I won't touch you unless you ask me to.”

That hurt Elena unexpectedly.

Once, his hands had been home.

Now he was requesting permission to stand near her.

“Why are you here, Adrian?”

“To protect you.”

“No.”

He frowned.

“Try again.”

The rainwater dripped from his hair.

Finally, the most powerful man Elena had ever known said the only thing she wanted to hear.

“Because I chose them over you, and I was wrong. Protection doesn't fix that. Finding Grant doesn't fix it. Nothing fixes it unless you decide it can be fixed.”

Elena stared at him.

Behind Adrian, Lucas suddenly stepped from the SUV.

“Boss.”

Adrian turned.

Lucas held a phone.

His expression had changed.

“What?”

“We intercepted a message from Grant.”

Lucas looked toward Elena.

May you like

“He knows she's here.”

Then every light in the farmhouse went out.
