Chapter 18 - THE DAUGHTER OF THE DEAD MAN

Elena Rourke walked into the FBI office voluntarily.

No lawyer.

No weapon.

No fear.

Arthur wanted her arrested immediately.

Clara wanted answers.

Elena looked remarkably like Samuel.

Same eyes.

Same stillness.

“Your children were never going to be hurt.”

Arthur's chair scraped backward.

Clara caught his wrist.

Elena continued.

“I needed leverage.”

Arthur laughed once.

Cold.

“Dominic used that sentence.”

Elena flinched.

Good.

“You terrified my children.”

“I know.”

“No. You don't.”

Arthur leaned across the table.

“My daughter had to send her six-year-old brother through a bathroom window because grown adults decided children were useful pieces on a board.”

Elena looked away.

Arthur sat back.

“That is what men like Dominic did.”

Clara watched Elena carefully.

“You thought Arthur would kill Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel killed my father.”

Arthur frowned.

“Daniel was in custody.”

“He would escape.”

“How do you know?”

Elena looked toward the mirrored wall.

“Because he always does.”

She explained.

Daniel's network extended far beyond organized crime.

Law enforcement.

Private security.

Government contractors.

He had spent decades collecting favors.

Samuel had been trying to expose him.

Elena had continued her father's work.

But she had made the same mistake everyone in Arthur's old world made.

She believed violence was the only reliable solution.

“So you kidnapped our children to manipulate Arthur into murdering Daniel,” Clara said.

Elena nodded.

Arthur stared.

“And you think you're different from Dominic?”

Elena's eyes filled.

“No.”

That answer changed the room.

She slid a folder across the table.

“Everything.”

Names.

Accounts.

Safe houses.

Officials.

Evidence.

Enough to dismantle Daniel's network.

Clara did not touch it immediately.

“Why give us this?”

Elena looked exhausted.

“Because Hope asked me a question.”

Arthur's expression sharpened.

“What question?”

“She asked whether my father would be proud of me.”

Silence.

Elena swallowed.

“I couldn't answer.”

Arthur looked away.

He understood that kind of ghost.

Federal prosecutors used Elena's evidence.

Daniel Hayes did try to escape.

He failed.

His network collapsed across five states.

Elena accepted charges for kidnapping and conspiracy.

Arthur did not interfere.

Neither to punish her more.

Nor to save her.

Consequences.

That was another thing Clara had taught him.

Weeks later, the Costello house became quiet again.

Too quiet.

Arthur installed three additional security systems.

Clara removed two.

He added biometric locks.

She allowed those.

He attempted to hire a former Navy SEAL to accompany Hope to school.

Hope threatened to move in with Evelyn.

Arthur surrendered.

One evening, Clara found him sitting beside Anthony's bed after the boy had fallen asleep.

Arthur stared at his son.

“He asked me today if bad people will come again.”

Clara sat beside him.

“What did you say?”

“I said I don't know.”

“Good.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Good?”

“You told the truth.”

He exhaled.

“I wanted to promise never.”

“We can't.”

“No.”

Clara rested her head against his shoulder.

“But we can promise he won't face it alone.”

Arthur took her hand.

Later, they checked on Hope.

She was awake.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Are you still scared?”

Arthur paused.

Years ago, Arthur Costello would never have admitted fear.

Now he sat on the edge of his daughter's bed.

“Yes.”

Hope nodded.

“Me too.”

Arthur kissed her forehead.

“That's okay.”

“Mom says brave isn't the opposite of scared.”

Arthur smiled.

“Your mother says a lot of things.”

“She says you should listen more.”

Clara laughed from the doorway.

Arthur sighed.

“I walked into that.”

Hope smiled.

Then she reached beneath her pillow.

“I found this in my backpack.”

Arthur's smile vanished.

She handed him a folded piece of paper.

Clara opened it.

One sentence.

THE COSTELLO DEBT IS NOT PAID.

No signature.

No name.

Arthur stared at it.

Clara's heart sank.

Daniel was imprisoned.

Elena had surrendered.

Dominic and Victor remained behind bars.

Samuel was dead.

So who was left?

Hope looked between her parents.

“Is that bad?”

Arthur folded the note.

He looked at Clara.

She already knew his answer.

“Yes.”

May you like

Because someone had gotten close enough to place a message inside their daughter's backpack.

And their family still had one enemy they had not found.
