Chapter 16 - THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LOVE AND FEAR

Arthur did not burn Chicago.
That surprised everyone.
Especially Arthur.
Old instinct screamed for violence.
Roadblocks.
Threats.
Men dragged from beds.
Instead, Arthur stood in Clara's office and asked:
“What would she do?”
Gregory stared.
Michael answered.
“She'd follow the evidence.”
Arthur nodded.
So they did.
Clara had left clues.
Her wedding ring was not surrender.
Inside the band was a microscopic tracking chip.
Arthur had insisted on adding it years earlier.
Clara had called him paranoid.
Then secretly upgraded it.
Michael stared at the signal.
“She upgraded your tracker?”
Arthur almost smiled.
“Of course she did.”
The signal moved south.
Then stopped.
An abandoned distribution center outside Joliet.
Arthur called federal investigators.
Gregory looked shocked.
“You're calling the government?”
“Yes.”
“Voluntarily?”
Arthur glared.
“Don't ruin it.”
Inside the warehouse, Clara sat opposite Daniel.
No ropes.
No chains.
That was deliberate.
Daniel wanted conversation.
“You could leave,” he said.
Clara looked toward the locked door.
“That sentence has credibility issues.”
Daniel smiled.
“You're free to walk out when we're finished.”
“You kidnapped me.”
“I removed you from a dangerous environment.”
“My husband?”
“Arthur Costello will always be dangerous.”
Clara considered him.
“Sometimes.”
Daniel seemed surprised.
“You admit it?”
“Of course.”
“Then why stay?”
Clara smiled faintly.
“Because he knows it too.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“He will relapse.”
“Maybe.”
“He will hurt you again.”
“Possibly.”
“And you accept that?”
“No.”
Clara leaned forward.
“I accept that loving someone doesn't guarantee they never fail. It means failure has consequences, repair requires work, and staying remains a choice.”
Daniel stared.
“You sound naive.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I was naive when I thought suffering proved devotion.”
Outside, Arthur's team approached.
Daniel heard nothing.
Clara did.
A tiny vibration in her ring tracker receiver.
Three pulses.
Arthur.
Daniel stood.
“You're waiting for him.”
“I knew he'd come.”
“You trust him that much?”
Clara thought about it.
“No.”
Daniel blinked.
“I trust the man he chooses to be now.”
The warehouse doors exploded inward.
Federal agents entered.
Arthur followed.
Daniel reached inside his jacket.
Arthur drew his weapon.
For one frozen second, the old world returned.
Arthur had the shot.
Daniel smiled.
“Do it.”
Arthur's finger tightened.
Clara said only one word.
“Arthur.”
He lowered the gun.
Federal agents tackled Daniel.
It should have ended there.
But Daniel began laughing.
Arthur approached.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Clara.
“You think this was about kidnapping you?”
Clara's stomach tightened.
Daniel smiled.
“I needed Arthur out of Chicago.”
Arthur froze.
His phone rang.
Michael answered first.
His face went white.
“Arthur.”
“What?”
“The house.”
Arthur stopped breathing.
Michael continued.
“Someone took the kids.”
The world disappeared.
Hope.
Anthony.
Arthur turned toward Daniel.
For one terrifying second, murder returned to his face.
Daniel smiled.
Arthur crossed the room.
Clara grabbed his hand.
He stopped.
Barely.
May you like
Daniel whispered:
“Now we'll find out whether you really changed.”
