Chapter 5 - Glass and Lead

Eleanor didn't scream. With terrifying reflexes honed by decades of mafia wars, the eighty-one-year-old matriarch dropped flat against the mahogany floorboards as automatic rounds shredded the velvet drapes and pulverized the plaster walls above them.
Kate instinctively rolled off the bed, clutching her cast to her chest, landing hard on the carpet behind the solid oak headboard.
“Stay down!” a voice roared through the dust.
The heavy suite door slammed open. Walken burst in, a submachine gun tucked tightly against his shoulder. He laid down three controlled bursts out the blown-out window frame toward the manicured courtyard below.
A muffled groan echoed from the garden outside, followed by the sound of a body collapsing into the decorative rose bushes.
“Sniper on the east gazebo neutralized!” Walken shouted into his radio. “Matteo, we have an active perimeter breach! East wing is compromised!”
Damon’s voice crackled through the comms, cold and lethal: *“I’m on the fourth-floor corridor. Are they secure?”*
“Both alive!” Walken reported, sliding across the floor to pull Eleanor into the cover of the adjoining bathroom. “Miss Bennett is unharmed, but they were using suppressed high-caliber rifles. This wasn't Caldwell’s frat-boy retinue. These are military-grade contractors.”
Kate crawled toward Eleanor, her breathing ragged, the adrenaline completely obliterating the effects of her painkillers. “Who is shooting at us? Preston is downstairs!”
Eleanor dusted drywall powder from her silk collar with infuriating composure. “Julian Vance. I told Damon three months ago that Julian’s loyalty was rotting from the inside. When Damon pulled Preston into the cellar, Julian knew his betrayal was exposed. He’s making his move before Damon can systematically tear his network apart.”
The door frame splintered as Damon entered.
His tuxedo jacket was gone. His white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, the sleeves rolled up to reveal thick, corded forearms marked by old scars. In his right hand, he held a customized tactical handgun, the suppressor smoking slightly.
He looked across the debris-littered room and locked eyes with Kate.
In a fraction of a second, the lethal monster vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated relief.
He crossed the room in two strides, crouching beside her, completely ignoring the gunfire still popping in the distant courtyard.
“Did they hit you?” he demanded, his hand hovering near her cheek, trembling ever so slightly before he caught himself.
“No,” Kate breathed, shaking. “Damon… Eleanor showed me the picture. My dad… you knew who I was the entire time?”
Damon’s jaw tightened. For the first time, a flicker of guilt crossed his steel facade.
“We don't have time for this,” he said, reaching down and helping her to her feet with his uninjured arm. “Julian has thirty men surrounding the estate. The power grid has been cut, and the cell towers are jammed.”
“Then we call the police!” Kate cried.
Damon looked at her with an eerie, razor-thin smile.

“In this house, Kate… we don't call 911. We are the emergency.”
