Chapter 2 - The Scent of Iron

The local anesthetic burned like cold mercury before dulling the jagged edges of Kate’s shattered radius. Dr. Reyes set the bone with practiced, terrifying efficiency, wrapping her arm in a rigid pneumatic splint.

“You’ll need orthopedic surgery by tomorrow afternoon,” Reyes murmured without looking at Damon. “The alignment is temporary. But it will hold.”

Damon stood by the reinforced window overlooking the manicured grounds. Outside, luxury sedans lined the serpentine gravel driveway like sleeping beetles. Downstairs, the chamber quartet transitioned effortlessly into Chopin.

“Take her to the east wing suites,” Damon commanded, his back still turned. “Third door past the security annex. No one enters that corridor without my retinal pass. Matteo, stay with her until Walken confirms the perimeter.”

“Mr. Blackwell—Damon,” Kate whispered, her voice dry from shock and the sedative. “Please. You can’t just make people vanish. His father is Senator Caldwell. If anything happens to Preston, the FBI—”

Damon turned slowly. The soft amber glow of the utility light caught the sharp angle of his jaw. “The FBI investigates disappearances, Kate. They don't investigate phantoms. A boy like Preston thinks this world is built on his father’s signatures. He forgets who bought the ink.”

He adjusted the silver cuff links on his sleeves, pristine and immaculate.

“Rest. By the time you wake up, the debt will be collected.”

Damon stepped out into the shadowed hallway, Matteo trailing half a pace behind. As the heavy door sealed behind them, Matteo spoke into an encrypted earpiece.

“Tomas has the footage. The library corridor at 9:18 PM. Caldwell had four associates with him. Three trust-fund parasites from the Carlyle firm, and two off-duty private security contractors hired by his family. But there’s a complication.”

Damon didn’t break stride. “Speak.”

“Preston wasn't just roaming the halls looking for a maid to terrorize,” Matteo said grimly, handing Damon a sleek tactical tablet. “The camera feed outside the master study shows them trying your electronic safe before Kate stumbled upon them. They weren't just drunk. They were hunting for something.”

Damon tapped the screen. The paused video showed Preston Caldwell leaning against the study door with a handheld decoder, while a man in a slate-gray suit stood watch.

The man in gray was not a guest.

He was Julian Vance—the head of logistics for Damon’s own inner council.

Damon froze in the center of the mahogany-paneled staircase. The music from the ballroom below drifted up, sweet and suffocating.

“Julian sold the access codes,” Damon said softly.

“Looks like it,” Matteo replied. “Preston’s father wants our shipping manifests. If the Caldwell family gets their hands on the southern docks, they squeeze our entire supply line.”

“Then this wasn't an accident,” Damon’s voice dropped an octave, radiating an arctic chill. “They assaulted my staff on my own floor while robbing my house.”

Below, in the grand ballroom, Preston Caldwell was laughing beside an ice sculpture, swirling a glass of vintage scotch, completely oblivious that his executioner was walking down the marble stairs.

Damon reached the landing, smiled cordially at an approaching governor, and whispered to Matteo:
