Chapter 8 - ELENA'S LAST CONFESSION

Luca crossed the ballroom in three strides.

He stopped inches from Elena, afraid that touching her might make her disappear.

“Is it really you?”

She nodded.

He reached for her face, then pulled his hand back as though he had no right to touch her.

“I buried you.”

“I know.”

“I stood beside your coffin.”

“I know, Luca.”

“I raised our daughter alone.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I watched her grow up from a distance. I wanted to come home every day.”

“Then why didn't you?”

“Because your father promised he would kill Sophie if I returned.”

The old man struck his cane against the floor.

“Enough sentiment.”

Elena turned toward him.

“You don't control us anymore.”

For the first time, Luca saw something in his wife's expression that he had never witnessed during their marriage.

Fear had become resolve.

Elena explained that she had discovered the ledger contained evidence of a network that had stolen children's identities, falsified deaths, and used vulnerable families as leverage. Their father had financed the operation, while Dr. Shaw had falsified medical records.

Adrian had uncovered the scheme and tried to help her escape.

But Vanessa had betrayed them.

“She told your father where I was,” Elena said. “When the boat exploded, Adrian believed I had died. I was taken to a private clinic and kept there under another name.”

Vanessa, standing near the doorway under Dominic's guard, began sobbing.

“I thought they would kill me.”

“They used your fear,” Elena replied. “Then you helped them use mine.”

Luca looked at his father.

“You built all of this?”

Their father smiled.

“I built a family empire. Every powerful family has secrets. I simply understood the price of keeping them.”

“And Emily's baby?”

Elena's expression softened.

“Grace was never supposed to be part of this. She was an innocent child caught in the middle. I arranged for her to be adopted by people who could protect her.”

“Why didn't you tell Emily?”

“I tried. Her mother had disappeared, the records were destroyed, and the people behind the operation were watching every person connected to the case. When I learned Emily had been hired at your estate, I knew someone had found her.”

“Vanessa?”

Elena shook her head.

“Someone higher.”

The old man suddenly laughed.

“You still don't understand. The ledger isn't what matters. The children are.”

He pressed a hidden switch beneath the table.

Metal shutters slammed over the windows.

The doors locked.

Dominic shouted into his radio, but the signal had been cut.

Their father stepped toward Emily.

“Give me the original ledger, Luca, and everyone walks out alive.”

Luca stared at him.

“Where is it?”

Elena reached into her coat and produced a small brass key.

“Your father's office safe. The one he told you never existed.”

She placed it in Luca's palm.

“He thinks the ledger is hidden there. But what he really wants is the second record.”

“What second record?”

“The list of every child moved through the hospital. Including the names of the people who paid to erase them.”

A gunshot cracked through the ballroom.

Everyone ducked.

Adrian had appeared on the balcony above them, weapon raised.

“Move!” he shouted.

Dominic's team forced open a side door as chaos erupted. Luca pulled Emily behind a marble pillar while Elena ran toward the staircase.

Their father seized Vanessa by the arm and dragged her toward a private passage.

“Help me!” she screamed.

Luca turned.

For one second, he could have let her go.

Then he saw the terror in her face.

He moved to help her, but Adrian fired at the lock on the passage door, forcing their father to retreat.

Vanessa collapsed against the wall, shaking.

“Why did you save me?” she whispered.

“Because I'm not him.”

They escaped through the side entrance as police sirens approached in the distance. Dominic had arranged for federal investigators to receive copies of the hospital records before the meeting began.

Their father fled through a concealed tunnel.

But the ledger was no longer the only evidence.

Elena's testimony, Patricia's original birth record, and the hospital's surviving documents were enough to begin dismantling the network.

At the estate, Emily finally learned the truth.

Her daughter Grace had survived.

Elena showed her a letter written by the couple who had adopted the child. They had raised Grace in Maine under a protected identity and had recently moved after receiving threats.

Emily pressed the letter to her chest.

“She's alive?”

Elena nodded.

“She always was.”

Emily began to cry.

Luca held her shoulders as she struggled to breathe.

Then Sophie entered the room.

She looked at Elena as though she were afraid to blink.

“Mommy?”

Elena knelt.

“My baby.”

Sophie ran into her arms.

For the first time in three years, the Moretti family was together.

But the peace lasted only until Dominic entered carrying a final document from the hospital archive.

His face was pale.

“Boss, we found the original list.”

Luca opened it.

The first page contained the names of the missing children.

The second contained the names of the adults who had arranged their disappearances.

And beside one name, someone had written a note in red ink.

DO NOT CONTACT. BELIEVED TO BE THE CURRENT HEAD OF THE MORETTI FAMILY.

Luca looked up.

The name beside the warning wasn't his father's.

May you like

It was his own.
