Chapter 10 - THE FAMILY THEY CHOSE

By sunrise, the Moretti estate was surrounded by reporters.
Someone had leaked the hospital list to the press. Headlines accused Luca of financing an illegal adoption network, and photographs of his father appeared beside claims that the Moretti family had controlled a decades-long criminal conspiracy.
Luca did not run.
He released the surviving records to federal investigators, turned over the accounts connected to his family's businesses, and publicly acknowledged that his name had appeared on documents he had not yet been able to explain.
It was the first time in his life that he chose transparency over control.
Adrian stood beside him in the study.
“You know what this will cost you.”
“My reputation? My business?”
“Everything our father built.”
Luca looked toward the window, where Sophie was playing with Emily in the garden.
“Then maybe everything he built deserves to fall.”
The investigation moved quickly.
Vanessa testified about the messages she had received from the Architect. Dr. Shaw's surviving assistants confirmed that hospital records had been altered. Patricia Bell provided the original birth documents, and Elena identified the private clinic where she had been held after the river incident.
Within a week, federal agents located Luca's father at a private airfield.
He was arrested before he could board a plane.
He refused to speak during questioning.
But as officers led him away, he looked directly at Luca.
“You think this ends with me?”
Luca met his gaze.
“No. I think it ends when the last child gets to go home.”
His father smiled.
“You still don't understand who you are.”
Then the police car door closed.
For the first time in decades, the Moretti family empire began to collapse under the weight of its own secrets.
The next morning, Emily received a call from Maine.
Grace's adoptive parents had agreed to a meeting.
Emily sat at the kitchen table, holding the phone with both hands.
“Are you sure?” she whispered.
The woman on the other end spoke gently.
“Grace has been asking questions about her birth for months. We told her she was adopted, and we've never hidden that from her. We think she's ready to meet you, provided we take it slowly.”
Emily began to cry.
“I don't want to take her away from you.”
“You won't. We're her parents, and we're not afraid of the truth. If you love her, there is room for you in her life.”
Emily covered her mouth.
For seven years, she had imagined this moment as a reunion that would erase every terrible thing that had happened.
Instead, she understood that love meant allowing her daughter to have more than one family.
They arranged to meet at a small park beside the ocean.
Grace arrived wearing a yellow sweater and carrying a stuffed rabbit. She had dark curls, bright eyes, and the same tiny crease between her eyebrows that appeared whenever she was nervous.
Emily knelt several feet away.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
Grace looked at her adoptive parents, then back at Emily.
“Are you my first mommy?”
Emily's heart broke.
“Yes.”
“Did you know where I was?”
“No, baby. I didn't. But I never stopped loving you.”
Grace considered this.
Then she walked forward and placed a small yellow bracelet in Emily's hand.
“I kept this because my parents told me it was the only thing that came with me when I was a baby.”
Emily pressed it to her lips.
For the first time in seven years, she held her daughter.
Not as a possession.
Not as a lost piece of herself that had to be reclaimed.
As a little girl who deserved to decide what family meant.
Months passed.
Luca and Elena began rebuilding their marriage slowly, with honesty replacing the silence that had poisoned their lives. Elena told Sophie the truth about her disappearance in gentle, age-appropriate pieces. Adrian accepted responsibility for his choices and agreed to cooperate fully with investigators.
Vanessa, stripped of her engagement and her place in the estate, faced charges connected to the hospital conspiracy. She wrote Luca a letter asking for forgiveness.
He read it once.
Then placed it in a drawer.
Forgiveness, he had learned, did not require pretending that betrayal had never happened.
Emily gave birth to a healthy baby boy in early spring.
Luca insisted that she receive the best medical care available, but Emily made one condition.
“No more threats disguised as protection,” she told him. “If you want to help me, let me make my own decisions.”
He agreed.
The baby was named Daniel.
At the christening, Sophie held her little brother's hand while Grace sat beside her adoptive parents in the front row. The two girls had become close through regular visits and video calls, discovering that sisterhood could grow even after years of separation.
Elena stood beside Luca beneath the church's stained-glass windows.
For the first time since her disappearance, she looked peaceful.
“Do you think we're going to be okay?” she asked.
Luca took her hand.
“I think we'll have to keep choosing each other.”
She smiled through tears.
“That sounds harder than running an empire.”
“It is.”
He kissed her forehead.
“And worth more.”
After the ceremony, the family gathered at the estate. The old oak wardrobe had been removed from the living room and replaced with a window seat overlooking the gardens.
Sophie sat beside Emily, holding Daniel while Grace showed her a drawing of their family.
There were two mothers, two fathers, three children, and a small black dog none of them owned.
Luca laughed when he saw it.
“Who's the dog?”
“That's the guard dog,” Sophie explained. “He keeps bad people away.”
Adrian, standing near the fireplace, raised an eyebrow.
“Then we should probably get one.”
For a moment, the house was filled with ordinary laughter.
It was the kind of happiness Luca had once believed his family could never have.
That evening, after everyone had gone to bed, Dominic entered the study carrying a final report.
“We recovered another file from your father's private archive.”
Luca glanced at it.
“What's in it?”
“An encrypted message sent to your father six months before Elena disappeared.”
“From whom?”
“We haven't identified the sender.”
Luca opened the file.
The message contained only three lines.
The first child survived.
The second child has been found.
The heir must never learn who gave the order.
Beneath the message was a photograph.
It showed a woman standing outside the Moretti estate twenty-nine years earlier, holding a newborn.
Luca recognized the woman immediately.
His mother.
But the baby in her arms wasn't him.
It was Adrian.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a name.
ELENA MORETTI.
Luca stared at the words, his heart pounding.
Elena was his wife.
Adrian was his brother.
And the photograph suggested that the woman who had given birth to Adrian might have been connected to Elena's family in a way neither of them had ever understood.
He looked toward the hallway, where Elena was sleeping beside their daughter.
For the first time in months, the old fear returned.
His father was in custody. The hospital network was being dismantled. The children who had been stolen from their families were finally being found.
But someone had kept one final secret beyond the reach of the ledger.
Luca folded the photograph and locked it inside the safe.
He would not let the past destroy the family he had fought to save.
Not tonight.
Outside, a black car sat beneath the trees beyond the estate gates.
Its headlights remained off.
Inside the vehicle, an unseen person watched the lit windows of the Moretti mansion.
A gloved hand lifted a phone.
One message was sent.
He found the photograph.
The reply arrived almost immediately.
Then it's time to tell him who his real mother was.
The car pulled away into the darkness.

And inside the mansion, Luca Moretti held his sleeping son while the people he loved finally rested in safety—unaware that the last secret of the Moretti bloodline had only just begun to surface.
THE END… FOR NOW.
