Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE MORETTI EMPIRE BLED

I moved into a secure residence arranged by Evelyn that same night.
Madison stayed with me, and an investigator accompanied us whenever we left the property. I hated the precautions, but I hated the thought of someone using my child to frighten me even more.
Vincent called when he learned about the threat.
"Where are you?"
"I won't tell you."
"Claire, please. I need to know you're safe."
"You need to stop thinking that knowing something gives you the right to control it."
He went quiet.
Then he said, "You're right. Tell Evelyn to contact Daniel. I'll make sure the security team answers to her, not me."
It was the first time he had offered help without demanding access in return.
I accepted the security arrangements through my attorney.
Nothing more.
Meanwhile, Sophia's brother was released after investigators uncovered evidence that the charges against him had been manufactured. He provided messages showing that Anthony's representatives had threatened his sister.
Sophia also turned over records of payments she had received.
She had not been paid to seduce Vincent, as I initially suspected. She had been paid to arrange meetings, leak selected photographs, and create the appearance of an affair.
The distinction didn't make her innocent.
She had still chosen to participate.
But it explained why Anthony had worked so hard to humiliate me.
He needed me gone before I found Isabella's evidence.
Evelyn arranged a meeting with a prosecutor who had been investigating financial crimes connected to the Moretti organization. The prosecutor agreed to review the ledger and recordings, provided we could establish their authenticity.
That should have been the beginning of a legal solution.
Instead, it became the beginning of a war.
Three nights later, gunshots shattered the windows of a warehouse owned by a Moretti subsidiary.
No one was killed, but the attack triggered a violent confrontation between rival groups. Vincent's men retaliated against a suspected target before the police arrived.
By morning, three people had been arrested, two businesses had been raided, and Chicago's news channels were reporting that the Moretti organization was fracturing.
Anthony summoned Vincent to a family meeting.
Vincent went.
I learned about it from Daniel, who called to warn me that Anthony intended to announce a new leadership arrangement.
"He wants Vincent to step aside," Daniel said. "He'll blame the recent violence on him and offer a deal to the other families."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"Anthony plans to claim that you're unstable and that your pregnancy has made you vulnerable to manipulation. He wants to portray you as someone who stole company records and is using them to extort the family."
I laughed bitterly.
"Of course he does."
"Vincent knows about the plan. He's trying to stop it."
"How?"
"He intends to give the prosecutor everything he has."
I stared at the wall.
"Everything?"
"Financial records. Communications. Internal reports. Even evidence that could implicate him in crimes committed by the organization."
For the first time, Vincent was willing to risk the empire he had spent his life building.
I didn't know whether it was love, guilt, or desperation.
Perhaps it was all three.
That evening, Vincent asked Evelyn to arrange a meeting between us in a secure office.
He arrived carrying a single folder.
Inside were documents showing that he had been investigating his father for years. Several reports had been filed with outside attorneys, but each investigation had been abandoned after witnesses withdrew or evidence disappeared.
One report included a statement from a hospital administrator.
The administrator claimed that, after Isabella died, Anthony had ordered her medical records sealed.
A second document was a copy of an email sent by the family's physician.
The patient had been approximately eight weeks pregnant. The result must not be disclosed to Vincent Moretti.
I read the sentence twice.
"Why didn't you find this before?"
"I never had the original email. My father told me the physician had retired and destroyed the records."
"How did you get it now?"
"The physician's daughter contacted my attorney. She found a copy among his personal papers after his death."
I looked at Vincent.
"Why would your father hide Isabella's pregnancy?"
"I don't know."
"Did he know about it?"
"The email suggests he did."
Vincent sat opposite me.
"Claire, I need you to understand something. I'm not asking you to forgive me. I'm not asking you to come home. I'm going to testify about everything I know, even if it destroys my company."
"Why now?"
"Because I finally understand that protecting the family name is not the same thing as protecting the people in it."
For a moment, I saw the man I had once loved.
Then his phone rang.
He listened for several seconds, and his face drained of color.
"What happened?" I asked.
He looked at me.
"My father is gone."
"Where?"
"His house is empty. His security team has disappeared. And someone just sent the prosecutor a photograph of Isabella's grave."
He showed me the image.
A fresh bouquet lay on the headstone.
Beneath it was a folded piece of paper.
The message was short.
