Chapter 4 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE MANSION

We reached Evelyn's office before opening Elena's envelope.

Inside were three photographs, a hospital bracelet, and a photocopy of a document bearing Isabella's signature.

The hospital bracelet carried a date from seven years earlier.

The document was more disturbing. It appeared to be a statement Isabella had prepared for a lawyer, describing financial irregularities connected to the Moretti family's businesses.

At the bottom, someone had written a single sentence in red ink.

If anything happens to me, look at the north wall.

Evelyn studied the page.

"This could be authentic, but we need independent verification."

"Elena said Vincent's father was involved."

"She also said someone might be following her. We need to be careful."

I thought about the sprawling Moretti mansion, the corridors I knew by heart, and the locked study Vincent had forbidden anyone to enter.

The north wall.

A memory surfaced.

Three years earlier, during a renovation, I had noticed a section of the study wall that sounded hollow when the workers removed a cabinet. Vincent had dismissed my question and ordered the room sealed until the project was finished.

I had never asked again.

Now I couldn't stop thinking about it.

That evening, Daniel called me.

"Mrs. Moretti, I need to speak with you."

"I told you to contact my attorney."

"This isn't about bringing you home."

"Then what is it about?"

He hesitated.

"Mr. Moretti's father has ordered the household staff to destroy old records from the study. I thought you should know."

My pulse quickened.

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because I've worked for Vincent for ten years. I've watched him make terrible decisions, but I've never seen him look the way he looked when you walked away."

"That doesn't change anything."

"I know."

He gave me an address and told me to meet him at a public café the following morning.

Evelyn insisted on sending her investigator to accompany me.

Daniel arrived wearing an ordinary coat, without the security team that usually followed him.

"Vincent doesn't know I'm here," he said.

"Then why risk it?"

Daniel looked down at his coffee.

"Because I was there the night Isabella died."

My breath caught.

He explained that he had been a junior security officer at the time. Vincent had been driving home with Isabella after an argument at a family dinner. Another vehicle had followed them for several miles.

Vincent escaped the crash with minor injuries.

Isabella did not.

"The official investigation said it was an accident," Daniel continued. "But afterward, I was ordered to erase footage from a security camera near the road."

"Who gave the order?"

"Anthony Moretti."

Vincent's father.

"Did Vincent know?"

Daniel's silence was answer enough.

I felt sick.

"Did you ever tell him what you saw?"

"Not directly. I was young, and Anthony threatened my family. But Vincent suspected his father was involved. He asked questions. Then he stopped."

"Why?"

"Because Anthony showed him documents suggesting Isabella had been working with a rival family. Vincent believed she might have betrayed him."

"And you think those documents were fake?"

"I think someone wanted him to believe that."

I stared at Daniel.

"Why are you telling me this now?"

"Because yesterday, I heard Anthony give an order. He wants you to return to the mansion before the divorce becomes public. He believes your pregnancy gives him a way to control Vincent."

My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.

"How?"

"By making sure the child inherits the Moretti name."

A chill passed through me.

Daniel leaned forward.

"There is one more thing. Anthony has arranged for Sophia to become Vincent's public partner in the business. The bracelet wasn't just a gift. It was a message to the families that she was being welcomed into the inner circle."

I remembered the way Vincent had fastened it around her wrist.

He had humiliated me without considering who might be watching.

Or perhaps he had considered it and decided I didn't matter.

That night, I returned to the mansion with Evelyn's investigator and a written agreement from Vincent's attorney allowing me to collect personal belongings.

I would not go alone, and I would not remain longer than necessary.

The staff avoided my eyes as I walked upstairs.

My bedroom looked exactly as I had left it. My clothes remained in the closet. My books sat on the shelves. The photograph from our wedding still stood on the dresser.

I turned the frame facedown.

Then I went to the study.

The investigator kept watch while I examined the north wall. Behind the remaining shelves, I found a narrow panel that had been painted over.

The silver key from the anonymous envelope fit the lock.

Inside was a shallow compartment containing a leather-bound ledger and a small digital recorder.

I took photographs of everything before touching anything else.

Then the recorder clicked on by itself.

A woman's voice filled the silent room.

"If Vincent is listening to this, it means I didn't survive."

Isabella.

I recognized her face from the photographs.

Her voice trembled.

"Vincent, I need you to understand something. Your father isn't the only person involved. The person who arranged the accident is someone you trust."

A pause.

Then Isabella whispered a name.

I dropped the recorder.

Because the name she spoke belonged to the man who had held my hand on our wedding day.

May you like

Vincent Moretti.
