Chapter 9 - The Last Conversation

The recording was played in the prosecutor's office under the supervision of investigators.

Luca sat beside Marco, his hands clasped tightly.

Antonio had insisted on attending despite his weakness.

Vanessa sat across the room with her attorney. She had agreed to cooperate and provide evidence of her father's role, but the authorities had not promised her immunity.

The prosecutor pressed play.

Vincent's voice filled the room.

"Gabriel has the ledger. He won't listen to reason."

Antonio answered, "Then give him what he wants. Let him go to the police."

"You know what that would mean."

"It would mean the truth."

A long silence followed.

Then Vincent spoke.

"You'll lose the company. Your reputation. Everything Maria tried to protect."

Antonio's voice was weary.

"Maria is dead. Gabriel is my son. I'm not losing another child to protect a business."

Luca closed his eyes.

For the first time, he heard his father choose Gabriel over the company.

But the recording continued.

Vincent said, "If you won't stop him, I will."

Antonio replied, "Don't touch him."

The recording ended abruptly.

The prosecutor paused it.

"That establishes prior knowledge and a threat, but it doesn't by itself prove Antonio participated in the murder."

Luca looked at his father.

"Why didn't you tell me about this?"

Antonio lowered his head.

"Because I was afraid Vincent would kill you next. After Gabriel died, he told me that if I spoke, you would be next. I believed him."

"Did you know Richard arranged the attack?"

"No. I learned that later, when I found the contract. By then, Vincent had made it clear he would destroy anyone who challenged him."

The prosecutor turned to Vanessa.

"Ms. Sterling, can you confirm your father's involvement?"

Vanessa nodded.

"My father told me he had arranged security for Gabriel the night he died. He said it was supposed to be a warning, not a murder. But after Gabriel was killed, he told me that if I spoke, he would make sure I lost everything."

"Why did you agree to help Vincent keep Antonio isolated?"

"Because Vincent threatened to expose my father as a fugitive and said he would kill him if I betrayed him. I thought I could keep everyone alive by delaying the truth."

Luca looked at her.

"And you thought marrying me would help?"

She began to cry.

"I thought if I became part of your family, I could protect you."

"You were already part of it. You could have told me."

"I know."

The prosecutor closed the folder.

"Mr. Moretti, the evidence now supports charges against Vincent, Richard Sterling, Daniel Price, and several others. We also have grounds to investigate the financial crimes involving your company."

Antonio nodded.

"I will cooperate."

Luca looked at his father.

"That includes admitting what you signed."

"Yes."

The meeting ended after midnight.

Outside, Vanessa approached Luca beneath the courthouse awning.

"I know you will never forgive me."

He looked at her for a long moment.

"I don't know if I can."

She nodded, accepting the answer.

"I did love you."

"Maybe," Luca said. "But love isn't a reason to keep the truth from someone. And it isn't a reason to put my father at risk."

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"What happens now?"

"You tell the truth. You face what you did. So do I, and so does my father."

She looked toward the street.

"Your wedding day was supposed to be the happiest day of your life."

Luca gave a tired, humorless smile.

"It was the day I finally stopped lying to myself."

Vanessa walked away with her attorney.

Luca watched her go.

He had lost his wedding, his certainty, and the version of his family he had believed in.

But he had gained something more important.

May you like

The truth.

And now he intended to make sure it survived.
