Chapter 1 - The Father Who Wasn't Invited

The wedding bells had barely stopped ringing when Clara Hayes pushed the wheelchair through the chapel doors.
Every guest turned.
At the altar, Luca Moretti stood in a black tuxedo, waiting to marry the woman he believed had saved him from a lifetime of loneliness.
Vanessa Sterling wore a white silk gown worth more than most people earned in a year. Diamonds glittered at her throat. Her smile was flawless.
Until she saw the man in the wheelchair.
Antonio Moretti, Luca's father, lay beneath a gray blanket, his face pale and sunken. An oxygen mask covered his mouth, and a portable tank hung from the side of his chair.
Vanessa's bouquet slipped from her fingers.
"Who let him in?"
Clara stopped beside the front row.
"Mr. Moretti asked me to bring him."
"Take him back to the hospital!" Vanessa snapped. "He's too sick to be here."
Antonio lifted one trembling hand.
Clara leaned toward him.
"Would you like the microphone, sir?"
He nodded.
Vanessa rushed forward and snatched it away.
"HE HAS NOTHING TO SAY!"
The guests exchanged bewildered glances.
Luca descended from the altar.
"Dad?"
Antonio's eyes filled with tears.
Luca had been told his father was too ill to leave his hospital room. Vanessa had even shown him a message supposedly written by Antonio, explaining that he refused to attend the wedding because he didn't approve of Luca's choice.
Now his father was sitting ten feet away, struggling to breathe.
"Vanessa, what is this?"
"Your father is confused. He's been taking medication for months. Clara should never have brought him here."
She reached toward Antonio's oxygen mask.
Luca caught her wrist.
"Don't touch my father."
His voice was quiet, but every person in the chapel heard it.
Vanessa stared at him.
For three years, Luca had never raised his voice to her. He had trusted her with his schedule, his business accounts, and even the security arrangements surrounding his family.
She had been the one person he believed would never betray him.
Clara retrieved a small recorder from Antonio's coat pocket.
"Your father asked me to play this if anyone tried to stop him."
Vanessa's face turned white.
"No."
Clara pressed the button.
A woman's voice filled the chapel.
"Keep him isolated until after the wedding. No visitors. No calls. Especially not Luca."
A man's voice answered, "But Mrs. Sterling, he's asking for his son."
"Then tell him his son doesn't want to see him."
The recording stopped.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
"That's your voice."
Tears appeared in her eyes.
"I was protecting you."
"From what?"
She said nothing.
Antonio slowly removed his oxygen mask for a moment.
"Luca..."
His son immediately knelt beside him.
"Don't strain yourself, Dad."
Antonio grasped Luca's hand.
"Your brother."
The chapel became silent.
Gabriel Moretti had been dead for three years.
The police said he had been killed during a robbery. His body had been found beside an abandoned warehouse, and the case had been closed after two suspects disappeared.
Luca had never accepted the explanation.
He had spent millions searching for the truth, only to find dead ends, missing witnesses, and contradictory reports.
Antonio's fingers tightened around his son's.
"She didn't want me here because I know who killed Gabriel."
A gasp swept through the guests.
Vanessa shook her head.
"He's confused! Luca, you cannot believe him!"
But Clara had already taken a folded photograph from the inside pocket of Antonio's coat.
She placed it in Luca's palm.
It showed Gabriel standing beside a black SUV on the night he died.
A second person stood near the driver's door.
The face was hidden by the darkness.
But the license plate was clear.
Luca recognized the vehicle.
It belonged to Sterling Security, the private company Vanessa had hired to protect their wedding.
He looked up slowly.
"Why was your security team with Gabriel that night?"
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"I don't know."
Antonio shook his head.
Clara lowered her voice.
"Someone threatened your father after Gabriel's funeral. That's why he hid the photograph."
"Who threatened him?" Luca demanded.
Antonio reached into his coat and pulled out a sealed envelope.
The handwriting on the front was unmistakable.
Gabriel's.
FOR LUCA—IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME.
Luca stared at it.
His brother had written those words two days before his death.
Vanessa suddenly lunged for the envelope.
"Don't open that!"
Luca stepped away.
"Why?"
For one terrible second, she forgot to cry.
She simply stared at the letter with naked fear.
Luca broke the seal.
Inside was a photograph and a handwritten note.
Luca, if Dad is right, someone has been using our family business to hide something much worse.
I found out who gave the order.
The final line had been torn away.
Luca looked at his father.
"Who was it?"
Antonio's eyes moved past him, toward the wedding guests.
He raised one trembling finger.
And pointed.
At the man standing beside the chapel's rear doors.
Luca turned.
His uncle, Vincent Moretti, was holding a champagne glass.
The glass slipped from his hand and shattered.
Vanessa whispered, "Please, Antonio. Don't."
Luca's gaze hardened.
"Uncle Vincent?"
Vincent forced a laugh.
"This is absurd. Your father is gravely ill. He's not thinking clearly."
Antonio looked directly at his younger brother.
"Three years ago, you told me Gabriel died because he was careless."
His voice broke.
"You stood beside his coffin and cried with me."
Vincent swallowed.
Antonio continued.
"But you knew exactly why my son died."
Luca stood.

The wedding was over before the bride could say another word.
And the real nightmare was only beginning.
