Chapter 9 - The Truth About the Fire

Dominic survived the surgery.
The bullet had passed through his shoulder without damaging a major artery, but the doctors ordered him to rest for several weeks.
Isabella stayed beside him.
For the first time in eighteen months, they could speak without fear that someone was listening.
She told him about the clinic, the false identity, and the nights she had woken from nightmares believing she could hear a car approaching.
Dominic told her about the search, the empty hospitals, and the unbearable silence of the mansion.
Neither tried to pretend that love had erased the pain.
They had survived something terrible.
Now they had to learn how to live after it.
Agent Lawson visited three days later with the latest findings.
Richard Vale, Marco Bellini, and Charles Sterling had been charged in connection with the financial fraud, the weapons shipment, witness intimidation, and the attempted murder at the warehouse. Additional charges were being considered as investigators examined the evidence.
Vanessa had provided messages, account records, and testimony connecting Charles to the forged property transfers. She had also admitted to lying about Isabella's disappearance.
Her cooperation helped the investigation, but it did not erase her role.
“There's something else,” Lawson said.
She placed the photograph from Vale's briefcase on Dominic's bedside table.
“We identified the third man.”
Dominic stared at the image.
It was Anthony Moretti, his father's younger brother.
His uncle had supposedly died overseas twelve years earlier.
“That isn't possible,” Dominic whispered.
“His death certificate was forged,” Lawson replied. “We've traced several companies connected to him. He appears to have helped establish the network Vale later used.”
Isabella looked at Dominic.
“Your uncle was alive all this time?”
Lawson nodded.
“He hasn't been located yet, but we believe he was the original architect of the property scheme. Vale took over the operation after Anthony disappeared from public view.”
Dominic looked away.
Another lie.
Another missing person.
Another piece of his family history built on a foundation of deception.
“Did he arrange the fire?” Isabella asked.
“We found a payment authorization bearing his signature. It was issued through one of the shell companies three days before the crash.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
For months, he had blamed himself for failing to protect Isabella. Now he knew that the people responsible had spent years building a system designed to hide their crimes.
He opened his eyes.
“Then we find him.”
Lawson shook her head.
“Your role in this is to cooperate with the investigation, not conduct your own hunt. We have teams tracing the accounts and travel records.”
Dominic nodded reluctantly.
After Lawson left, Isabella sat beside him.
“You don't have to carry the whole world on your shoulders.”
“Someone has to make sure they can't hurt anyone else.”
“And someone has to make sure you survive long enough to do it.”
He looked at her.
“You're not afraid of me?”
“Of you? No.”
“Of what my family has done?”
She considered the question.
“I'm afraid of what people become when they believe power means they never have to answer for their choices. But I don't believe you're beyond changing.”
Dominic reached for her hand.
“I don't want to run the family the way my father did.”
“Then don't.”
He gave a tired laugh.
“You make it sound simple.”
“It isn't simple. But it is a choice.”
A week later, Dominic met with the family’s legitimate business managers and announced that every property transfer would be independently reviewed. The shell companies would be dissolved where legally possible, the remaining assets would be placed under independent oversight, and the family’s legitimate enterprises would cooperate fully with the authorities.
He also agreed to surrender several operations that could not be separated from criminal activity.
Some of his associates threatened to leave.
Others accused him of betraying his father.
Dominic listened without changing his decision.
He had spent too long confusing loyalty with silence.
Then, one evening, Emma arrived at the hospital carrying a small box.
“I found this beneath the lining of the wedding dress,” she said.
Dominic opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Isabella and Dominic on their wedding day. On the back, Isabella had written a sentence:
The truth is not what destroys a family. The lies are.
Dominic handed the photograph to his wife.
She smiled through her tears.
For the first time since the night she disappeared, they allowed themselves to imagine a future.
But the next morning, Agent Lawson called with an urgent update.
Anthony Moretti had been found.
May you like
He was in custody.
And he had asked to speak to Dominic alone.
