Chapter 1 - The Letter Hidden in the Wedding Dress

“BURN IT! BURN THAT DRESS RIGHT NOW!”

Vanessa Sterling’s scream shattered the silence of the Moretti mansion’s ballroom.

Every guest turned toward the young maid standing near the entrance, her arms wrapped around an ivory wedding gown.

Emma Reed looked frightened, but she refused to let go.

Dominic Moretti rose slowly from his chair.

He recognized the gown immediately.

It was the dress Isabella had worn seven years earlier, when she had walked down the aisle and promised to love him despite the dangerous world surrounding his family.

Eighteen months ago, Isabella had disappeared.

Three months later, authorities had declared her legally dead after investigators discovered evidence suggesting she had died in a remote fire. No body had ever been recovered, but Vanessa had convinced Dominic that continuing the search would only prolong his suffering.

Now, the dress was standing in front of him.

“Emma,” he whispered. “Where did you find that?”

“In the old storage room beneath the east staircase, sir.”

Vanessa hurried toward her.

“That room was supposed to be cleared out! Give me the dress!”

Dominic stepped between them.

“Touch it, and you'll answer to me.”

Vanessa stopped.

For seven years, Dominic had rarely raised his voice at her. Since Isabella’s disappearance, Vanessa had become his closest companion, comforting him through sleepless nights and persuading him that a future together might help him escape his grief.

Their wedding was scheduled for the following Saturday.

But at that moment, Vanessa looked less like a loving fiancée and more like a woman watching a locked door swing open.

Dominic turned to Emma.

“Why did you bring this here?”

The maid swallowed.

“Mrs. Moretti asked me never to throw it away. Three days before she disappeared, she made me promise.”

Dominic's face drained of color.

“What exactly did she say?”

Emma carefully lifted the gown's inner lining.

“She told me that if anything happened to her, I should bring the dress to you. She said you'd understand when you found what she'd hidden inside.”

A dark blue seam ran beneath the waistline. Isabella had always used blue thread for repairs, even when everyone insisted white would look better.

Dominic took a small knife from his pocket and cut the stitches.

A folded envelope slipped onto the table.

His name was written across the front in Isabella's unmistakable handwriting.

FOR DOMINIC.

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Don't open it.”

Dominic stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because Isabella was sick, Dominic. She was suspicious of everyone. She believed people were following her.”

He pulled free.

“Then you won't mind if I read her letter.”

Inside were two pages.

The first sentence made his blood run cold.

My love, if you're reading this, Vanessa has already lied to you.

Dominic continued.

Someone has been moving money out of the Moretti family trust. I found forged signatures and documents transferring our properties to Sterling Holdings LLC. When I confronted Vanessa, she threatened me.

She also showed me something that made me afraid to return home.

Dominic looked up.

“What did you show her, Vanessa?”

“Nothing!”

He read the next paragraph.

If anything happens to me, check the original ownership records. And don't trust the person who tells you I left willingly.

The ballroom fell silent.

Dominic remembered Vanessa telling him that Isabella had abandoned him. He remembered her urging him to stop searching. He remembered the sudden resignation of the family accountant and the unexplained transfers that Vanessa had assured him were ordinary business adjustments.

He had trusted her.

He had even asked her to marry him.

Emma pointed toward the gown's collar.

“There's something else, sir.”

Beneath a pearl button, Dominic discovered a tiny brass key. A paper tag had been stitched beside it.

SAFE DEPOSIT BOX 417.

Vanessa lunged.

“Give me that key!”

Dominic caught her arm.

“Why are you afraid of a safe deposit box?”

She began to cry.

“Because Isabella didn't understand what she found!”

“Then explain it.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Emma lowered her voice.

“Mrs. Moretti told me the box contains the original trust documents. And a recording.”

Dominic's grip tightened around the key.

“What recording?”

Emma looked at Vanessa.

“The night Mrs. Moretti confronted you and the man who helped you.”

Vanessa went utterly still.

Dominic slowly turned toward his fiancée.

“What man?”

Her lips trembled.

“Please, Dominic. You don't know what you're doing.”

He held up the key.

“Then tell me whose voice my wife recorded.”

Vanessa's eyes filled with terror.

Emma delivered Isabella's final instruction.

“Sir, she said you'd recognize his voice immediately.”

Dominic closed his fingers around the key.

May you like

For the first time in eighteen months, he allowed himself to consider a possibility more terrifying than his wife's death.

What if Isabella had never died at all?
