Chapter 9 - The Last Moretti Secret

The waterfront warehouse had been abandoned for almost fifteen years.

Luca arrived with Dominic and two trusted men.

Elena insisted on accompanying him, but this time he had agreed on one condition: she would remain behind the main entrance with Dominic until the children were safe.

The warehouse smelled of dust, oil, and old seawater.

A single light burned above the center of the room.

Adrian stood beneath it.

He was in his late forties, with dark hair and a face that bore an unsettling resemblance to Luca's father.

Two children sat on a bench behind him.

Isabella and Noah.

They were frightened, but unharmed.

Luca took one step forward.

“Let them go.”

Adrian smiled.

“You really are your father's son. Always giving orders.”

“I'm not here for a conversation.”

“No. You're here because you think you can save everyone.”

Adrian gestured toward the children.

“Do you know what your father told me when I was seven?”

Luca remained silent.

“He said I was an embarrassment. That my mother was nothing more than a mistake.”

Adrian's voice trembled.

“He gave you everything. The name, the mansion, the company. Even the woman I was supposed to love.”

Luca frowned.

“What woman?”

Adrian pulled a photograph from his pocket.

It showed Vanessa standing beside him at a restaurant.

Luca stared.

“You and Vanessa?”

“She approached me before she approached you. She knew exactly who I was. She promised to help me reclaim my inheritance.”

“Then why did she get engaged to me?”

“Because she needed access to your house, your records, and your children.”

Luca's expression hardened.

“And Elena?”

Adrian's smile vanished.

“She was never supposed to survive.”

Behind the entrance, Elena heard the words through Dominic's earpiece.

Her stomach tightened.

Luca took another step forward.

“You arranged the accident?”

Adrian looked almost offended.

“I didn't arrange it. Your father did.”

The words landed like a bomb.

Adrian explained that Luca's father had discovered Elena's pregnancy and feared that the children would become obstacles to the trust's original succession plan.

He had instructed Margaret to monitor Elena and arrange for her to disappear if necessary.

Vanessa had volunteered to help.

But the plan had gone wrong.

Elena survived.

The children survived.

And Adrian had been left waiting for an inheritance that could not be transferred.

“Where is Margaret?” Luca asked.

Adrian smiled.

“She's the reason we're all here.”

A side door opened.

Margaret entered.

She was no longer leaning on her cane.

Her posture was straight, and her expression had lost its sadness.

Elena stepped out from behind the entrance.

“You lied to me.”

Margaret looked at her.

“I did what I had to do.”

“You left me believing my children were gone.”

“I kept them alive.”

“You separated a mother from her children!”

Margaret's eyes flashed.

“And I kept your husband from becoming the next victim.”

Luca stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Margaret reached into her coat and removed a small envelope.

Inside was an old photograph of Luca's mother holding two newborn boys.

One was Luca.

The other was Adrian.

But written on the back was a name neither man recognized.

Michael Bellini.

Adrian looked at the photograph.

His face changed.

“That isn't possible.”

Margaret nodded.

“Your father wasn't your father, Adrian.”

Silence.

“He adopted you after your mother died. Your biological father was a man named Michael Bellini.”

Luca looked between them.

“And who was Michael Bellini?”

Margaret swallowed.

“The man your father ordered killed twenty-eight years ago.”

Adrian's face drained of color.

“You're lying.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I have the original birth records. Your mother was married to Michael before she ever met Lorenzo Moretti.”

Adrian slowly lowered his weapon.

Everything he had believed about his life was collapsing.

Then Vanessa appeared at the upper walkway.

She was holding a gun.

“Enough!”

Everyone turned.

“Vanessa,” Luca said.

She looked down at him.

“I told you this family would destroy everything.”

“You kidnapped my children.”

“I gave them a better life than Elena ever could.”

Elena stepped forward.

“You don't get to call stealing my children love.”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, she looked almost human.

Then she raised the gun toward Elena.

Luca moved.

A shot rang out.

Dominic shouted.

The lights went dark.

When the emergency lights flickered back on, Vanessa was gone.

Adrian lay on the floor, bleeding from his shoulder.

The children were safe.

And Margaret was standing over Luca, holding a second gun.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

Luca stared at her.

“Why?”

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“Because there's one last thing your father never wanted you to discover.”

She placed a photograph in his hand.

It showed Luca's mother holding a third newborn baby.

And the child had a hospital bracelet bearing Luca's name.
