Chapter 2 - The Wife Who Remembered Everything

For several seconds, nobody moved.
Luca stared at the woman as though the entire ballroom had disappeared around them.
“Elena?” he finally whispered.
She nodded.
His knees almost buckled.
He had stood over a coffin three years earlier. He had watched the flames consume what he had been told was his wife's body. He had spent months waking up in the middle of the night, reaching across an empty bed, only to remember that Elena was gone.
And now she was standing in front of him.
Alive.
Vanessa recovered first.
“This is ridiculous,” she announced, forcing a laugh. “Someone is playing a sick joke.”
Elena didn't look at her.
“Would you like me to remind you what happened on October seventeenth, three years ago?”
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Luca stepped closer.
“What happened that night?”
Elena looked at him. Her eyes were wet, but her voice remained steady.
“I was driving home from the hospital. I had just discovered I was pregnant. I called you twice, but you didn't answer.”
Luca's expression changed.
“Pregnant?”
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“She was never pregnant. She's lying.”
Elena reached into her small handbag and removed a folded piece of paper.
It was a hospital report.
Luca took it with shaking fingers.
The document contained Elena's name, the date, and the confirmation of a pregnancy approximately six weeks along.
He looked up.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I tried.”
Elena swallowed.
“But your fiancée made sure I never reached you.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That's enough!”
Luca turned toward her.
“You said Elena died in a car accident.”
“She did!”
“Then explain why she's standing here.”
Vanessa glanced around the ballroom. Every guest was watching.
Her father, Richard Rowan, stood near the staircase, his expression unusually tense.
“Luca, darling,” Vanessa said, softening her voice. “Think about this logically. Anyone can buy a bracelet. Anyone can obtain a medical document. This woman is trying to destroy our future.”
Elena finally looked at her.
“Our future?”
She gave a small, bitter laugh.
“You mean the future you planned while I was lying in a hospital bed?”
Vanessa's face tightened.
Luca turned back to Elena.
“Where have you been?”
“Three years in a private rehabilitation facility. I couldn't walk properly. I had memory problems. I didn't even remember my own name when I woke up.”
“Who took you there?”
“A nurse named Margaret. She found me after the crash.”
Elena explained that the vehicle had been forced off the road during a storm. She remembered headlights behind her, a sudden impact, and then nothing.
When she regained consciousness, she was told that she had no identification and no family willing to claim her.
The hospital had recorded her under an unidentified patient number.
It took nearly two years before her memories returned.
“And when I finally remembered you,” she continued, “I tried to contact the mansion.”
Luca's jaw tightened.
“What happened?”
“Your security team told me you were engaged to Vanessa. They also told me you had ordered everyone never to mention my name again.”
Luca looked horrified.
“I never gave that order.”
“I know that now.”
A strange silence followed.
Emily, still standing nearby, slowly stepped forward.
“Mr. Moretti,” she said nervously, “there's something you should know.”
Luca looked at her.
Emily reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this inside Miss Vanessa's private dressing room yesterday. I was going to give it to you tonight, but she caught me.”
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“Emily, don't.”
The housemaid handed Luca the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Elena sitting in a hospital bed.
On the back, someone had written:
SHE IS STILL ALIVE. MAKE SURE SHE NEVER LEAVES THE FACILITY.
Luca's face turned cold.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?”
Vanessa began to cry.
But before she could answer, Richard Rowan stepped forward.
“Luca, you need to listen to me. That photograph is not what you think.”
Luca slowly turned.
“Then tell me what it means.”
Richard's gaze moved toward Elena.
For the first time, the powerful businessman looked genuinely afraid.
“Because the woman standing in front of you isn't the only person who survived that night.”
Elena went pale.
“What?”
Richard reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
He showed Luca a photograph.
A young woman stood beside a hospital crib.
And inside the crib was a newborn baby.
Elena's hand flew to her mouth.
Because the baby was wearing the same silver bracelet she had placed around her wrist the night of the accident.

And underneath the photograph was a handwritten message:
YOUR DAUGHTER IS ALIVE.
