Chapter 8 - Vanessa’s Final Move

Grace returned to college in January.
For the first time in years, she sat inside a classroom not as a cleaner, waitress or employee.
As a student.
Adrian arranged nothing without asking her.
That mattered.
He offered tuition.
Grace refused.
He offered transportation.
She accepted only after he pointed out that Victor's remaining associates still presented a security risk.
Their relationship grew slowly.
Quiet dinners.
Late conversations.
Walks with Lily.
No declarations.
No diamonds.
No promises they weren't ready to make.
Then Vanessa escaped custody.
The news reached Adrian at 4:17 p.m.
By 4:20, he was calling Grace.
No answer.
By 4:22, her security driver reported she had never arrived at the pickup point.
Adrian felt the old darkness return.
But this time he controlled it.
Marcus traced Grace's phone.
It had last transmitted near Noah's rehabilitation center.
Adrian understood immediately.
Vanessa knew Grace's weakness.
Family.
Grace had received a message claiming Noah had collapsed.
She rushed to him.
The message was false.
Vanessa intercepted her in the parking garage.
When Grace woke, she was inside an abandoned Blackwood warehouse.
Vanessa sat across from her.
“You took everything.”
Grace's wrists were tied.
“No. You destroyed everything yourself.”
Vanessa slapped her.
Grace tasted blood.
“You think Adrian loves you?”
Grace said nothing.
“He loved Catherine.”
“I know.”
“He'll never love you like that.”
“I don't need him to.”
Vanessa hesitated.
Grace looked directly at her.
“That's the difference between us.”
Vanessa's expression twisted.
“You wanted to possess him. Catherine wanted to save him.”
“And you?”
“I want him to become someone Lily doesn't have to fear losing.”
Vanessa stood.
“You really think you're better than me.”
“No.”
Grace's voice remained calm.
“I think Lily deserved better than both the world you tried to give her and the world Adrian inherited.”
Outside, Adrian's team approached.
But Vanessa had prepared for them.
The warehouse contained explosives connected to a remote trigger.
Marcus saw the wiring.
“We can't rush it.”
Adrian stared at the building.
“Grace is inside.”
“And if you enter wrong, everyone dies.”
Inside, Vanessa forced Grace toward a camera.
“Tell Adrian to come alone.”
Grace looked at the lens.
“No.”
Vanessa pressed the gun against her shoulder.
“Say it.”
Grace knew Adrian would see the recording.
So she spoke carefully.
“Adrian, don't come for me.”
Vanessa smiled.
Then Grace added:
“Take Lily somewhere safe. Finish what Catherine started.”
Vanessa struck her again.
“You stupid—”
Grace kicked the table.
The camera fell.
Outside, Adrian heard the struggle.
He moved.
Marcus grabbed him.
“Wait.”
“No.”
“You have a daughter.”
Those words stopped him.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Old Adrian would have charged inside.
Old Adrian believed force solved everything.
Grace had taught him otherwise.
“Find another entrance.”
Ten minutes later, Marcus located an old drainage corridor beneath the warehouse.
Adrian entered alone.
He found Grace tied beside a support column.
Vanessa stood behind her.
“You came.”
Adrian lowered his weapon.
“Let her go.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You never begged for me.”
“I’m not begging now.”
“You love her.”
Adrian looked at Grace.
“Yes.”
Grace's eyes widened.
It was the first time he had said it.
Vanessa's face collapsed.
“All this because your daughter called a servant Mommy?”
“No.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“This happened because you thought love was ownership.”
Vanessa raised the detonator.
Grace saw something Adrian didn't.
A loose electrical cable behind Vanessa.
She kicked backward.
Vanessa stumbled.
The detonator fell.
Adrian lunged.
A shot exploded.
Grace screamed.
Adrian hit the floor.
For one horrible second, nobody moved.
Then Adrian pushed himself up.
Blood spread across his upper arm.
Vanessa reached for the detonator.
Grace kicked it away.
Marcus and the security team rushed inside.
Vanessa was restrained.
This time, there would be no escape.
Grace dropped beside Adrian.
“You're shot.”
“Apparently.”
“This isn't funny.”
“I've had worse.”
She was crying.
Adrian touched her cheek.
“I meant it.”
“What?”
“What I said.”
Grace stared at him.
“I love you.”
She closed her eyes.
“Adrian—”
“You don't have to answer.”
She laughed through tears.
“You get shot and suddenly develop emotional maturity?”
“Grace.”
“I love you too.”
He kissed her forehead.
Then Marcus interrupted.
“We should probably deal with the bullet before this becomes more romantic.”
Grace laughed.
Even Adrian smiled.
But Vanessa, being led away, turned back.
“You still don't know everything.”
Adrian ignored her.
She shouted:
“Catherine recorded the crash!”
Everyone stopped.
Vanessa smiled.
May you like
“You found the wrong memory card.”
And for the first time since her arrest, Adrian realized she might be telling the truth.
