Chapter 7 - The Betrayal Sitting at Adrian’s Table

The arrests did not end the nightmare.
They exposed how deep it went.
Victor had bribed employees, manipulated financial records and maintained secret alliances across Adrian's organization.
Vanessa had helped him access private schedules.
Catherine had discovered the network months before her death.
But there were still people loyal to Victor.
Adrian began dismantling everything.
Grace watched the feared man become something different.
He stopped disappearing before sunrise.
He ate breakfast with Lily.
He attended therapy sessions.
He listened when she spoke.
At first, Lily spoke only a few words at a time.
Then sentences.
Then questions.
Hundreds of questions.
“Why is the moon following our car?”
“Why do grown-ups drink coffee if it tastes bad?”
“Why does Daddy always look angry when he's thinking?”
Grace laughed at that one.
Adrian did not.
“I don't.”
Lily looked at Grace.
“He does.”
Grace smiled.
“He definitely does.”
Adrian stared at both of them.
Then, unexpectedly, laughed.
Mrs. Price cried when she heard it.
The house was changing.
But Grace knew she could not remain forever.
Noah was recovering.
She had begun considering returning to college.
One evening, she told Adrian.
“I want to finish my degree.”
He stared at her.
“You should.”
Grace had expected resistance.
“You're not angry?”
“Why would I be?”
“Lily.”
His expression softened.
“She'll miss you.”
“So will I.”
The words came quietly.
Grace looked at him.
Adrian stepped closer.
“But I won't turn this house into another reason you sacrifice your future.”
Grace's throat tightened.
For years, everyone had needed something from her.
Noah needed care.
Employers needed labor.
Bills needed payment.
Nobody had asked what Grace wanted.
Adrian did.
“I want to teach,” she whispered.
“Then teach.”
“And Lily?”
“She'll still have you.”
Grace looked up.
“In what capacity?”
Neither moved.
The question hung between them.
Adrian lifted one hand toward her face.
Then stopped.
“Tell me to stop.”
Grace didn't.
He kissed her.
Softly.
Nothing like the dangerous man whispered about in restaurants.
When they separated, Grace whispered, “This is complicated.”
“My life has never been accused of simplicity.”
She laughed.
From the hallway came Lily's voice.
“I knew it.”
They turned.
Lily stood there smiling.
Grace covered her face.
Adrian sighed.
“Bed.”
“But—”
“Lily.”
“Fine.”
She walked away, then turned.
“Grace?”
“Yes?”
“Are you staying?”
Grace looked at Adrian.
“For tonight.”
Lily grinned.
“Good enough.”
But outside the estate, danger remained.
Victor's attorneys were building a defense.
Vanessa claimed her confession had been made under duress.
Then Marcus discovered the worst news.
Someone had accessed the Blackwood financial network after Victor's arrest.
Someone still inside Adrian's circle.
They traced the login.
It belonged to Daniel Mercer.
Adrian's oldest friend.
His daughter's godfather.
The man who had driven Lily home the night Catherine died.
Adrian summoned him.
Daniel did not deny it.
“I helped Catherine.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
“That night, she called me.”
Daniel explained.
Catherine knew Victor was following her.
She gave Lily to Daniel and ordered him to drive the child home.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Victor threatened my wife.”
“You let me believe Catherine died alone.”
“I kept Lily alive.”
Adrian punched him.
Daniel hit the floor.
Grace entered just as Adrian raised his fist again.
“Adrian!”
He stopped.
Daniel wiped blood from his mouth.
“I deserved that.”
Grace stepped between them.
“No more secrets.”
Daniel looked at her.
“There's one more.”
Adrian's expression darkened.
“What?”
“Catherine wasn't trying only to expose Victor.”
Daniel reached into his jacket.
“She was trying to give Adrian a way out.”
He placed documents on the table.
Legal restructuring papers.
Trusts.
Asset transfers.
Evidence packages prepared for federal prosecutors.
Catherine wanted Adrian to dismantle the criminal side of the Blackwood organization.
“She wanted Lily to grow up free of it,” Daniel said.
Adrian stared at the documents.
For years, he had told himself the empire protected his family.
Now he understood.
It had killed his wife.
Traumatized his daughter.
Nearly killed Grace.
Adrian made a decision.
“Finish what Catherine started.”
Marcus stared at him.
“You understand what that means?”
“Yes.”
Enemies.
Lost power.
Possibly prosecution.
Adrian looked toward Lily playing outside with Grace.
“I know exactly what it means.”
For the first time in his adult life, Adrian Blackwood chose something more important than power.
Freedom.
But Vanessa had not finished with them.
May you like
And from her jail cell, she had just sent a message to the one person who still hated Adrian enough to help her.
If I go down, Grace Bennett dies first.
