Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION NO ONE EXPECTED

Dominic read the note again.

The man who ordered the crash was not Victor.

The name beneath it was Antonio Moretti.

His father sat motionless in his wheelchair, staring at the paper as if it had been pulled from a grave.

Catherine shook her head.

“Rose wouldn't write that unless she believed it.”

Antonio's lips trembled.

“Rose was wrong.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Then explain.”

Antonio closed his eyes.

Twenty years earlier, Victor had been siphoning money from the family estate. Antonio had discovered the missing funds and threatened to remove his brother from the organization.

Victor responded by arranging Antonio's poisoning.

But Catherine had uncovered something worse: Victor was using the family business to finance a network of illegal medical experiments and private detention facilities.

She planned to take the evidence to federal investigators.

Antonio had begged her to wait.

He believed he could negotiate with Victor and recover the stolen money without exposing the family.

Catherine refused.

She told him that silence would only make Victor stronger.

Their argument ended with Catherine leaving the mansion.

Antonio watched her drive away.

He never saw her again.

“Did you order the crash?” Dominic asked.

Antonio shook his head.

“No. But I gave Victor the route she planned to take.”

The room went silent.

Catherine stared at him.

“You told him where I was going?”

“I thought he would intercept you. I thought he would take the documents and frighten you into returning home.”

“You knew he was dangerous.”

“I believed I could control him.”

Catherine stepped away.

“You sent me into his hands.”

Antonio began crying.

“I never wanted you hurt.”

“But you made it possible.”

Dominic felt anger rise, but beneath it was something more painful: the realization that his family had been destroyed by people who repeatedly chose control over trust.

“Why didn't you tell me?” he asked.

Antonio looked at him.

“Because I was ashamed.”

“You let me believe Mom was dead.”

“I thought if you knew the truth, you would hate me.”

Dominic stared at him.

“You don't get to decide which truths I'm strong enough to hear.”

Antonio lowered his head.

“I know.”

Catherine sat beside the fireplace, her hands trembling.

For twenty years, she had believed Victor alone was responsible for her disappearance. Now she understood that Antonio had helped create the circumstances that allowed it.

He had not ordered the crash, but he had handed her fate to the man who did.

Rachel stood quietly near the door.

She understood something about Antonio's confession that the others could not yet see.

Rose had not kept the key to punish him.

She had kept it because she believed he might one day be brave enough to tell the truth.

Dominic turned toward Marcus.

“Where are the documents?”

Marcus removed a small key from his pocket.

“My father's safety deposit box contains the original medical records, the financial ledger, and a recording of Victor discussing the crash.”

“Then we retrieve them.”

“There's a problem.”

Dominic waited.

“Victor has been monitoring the bank. If we go there, he'll know.”

“Let him.”

Marcus shook his head.

“He won't come himself. He'll send someone to destroy the evidence.”

Vanessa spoke for the first time.

“I know how to get into Victor's office.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Why would I trust you?”

“Because I have spent years doing what he tells me, and I am tired of being afraid.”

She took a small envelope from her purse.

Inside was a photograph of a locked safe beneath Victor's study floor.

“He keeps a second set of records here. The originals are in the bank, but the copies show every transfer he made through the foundation.”

Dominic studied the photograph.

“Why didn't you give me this before?”

“Because I thought marrying you would protect me from him.”

“And now?”

“Now I understand that he was never going to let me go.”

Dominic nodded slowly.

“You're going to help us retrieve the records.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“If he catches me—”

“He won't.”

“You can't promise that.”

“No,” Dominic said. “I can't. But I can promise that you won't face him alone.”

For the first time, Vanessa seemed to believe him.

***

That night, Dominic, Marcus, and Vanessa entered Victor's country house.

Rachel remained at the mansion with Catherine and Antonio, guarded by two officers Dominic trusted.

The house was dark except for a light in the study.

Vanessa used her access code to disable the alarm.

Marcus opened the hidden safe beneath the floor.

Inside were bank statements, medical records, and a series of photographs documenting payments to private clinics.

Dominic found a folder labeled CATHERINE MORETTI.

It contained psychiatric evaluations signed by doctors who had never examined her.

The reports described Catherine as delusional, unstable, and incapable of making independent decisions.

A forged legal order authorized her continued confinement.

Dominic felt sick.

Victor had not merely hidden Catherine. He had built an entire false identity around her, making it appear that she had willingly abandoned her family.

Then Vanessa found a smaller folder.

Inside was a list of names.

Judges. Police officers. Hospital administrators. Bank executives.

And at the bottom, one name was circled in red.

MARCUS REED.

Dominic turned toward his security chief.

“What is this?”

Marcus stared at the page.

“I don't know.”

Vanessa stepped back.

“Someone has been paying you.”

Marcus looked genuinely shocked.

“I've never received money from Victor.”

Dominic examined the entries.

The payments had begun eleven years earlier, the same year Marcus joined the Moretti organization.

Each payment was marked with a code.

PROTECTION—SON OF REED.

Dominic's suspicion deepened.

“Did Victor threaten your father?”

“Yes.”

“Did he pay you to stay close to me?”

“No.”

Marcus's voice hardened.

“I stayed close to you because I believed you deserved the truth.”

Dominic wanted to believe him.

But trust had become a luxury he could no longer afford.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Vanessa froze.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

The study door opened.

Victor stood in the doorway, holding a pistol.

Behind him were two armed men.

“I wondered how long it would take you,” Victor said.

Dominic slowly raised his hands.

“It's over.”

Victor laughed.

“Nothing is over.”

He looked at Vanessa.

“You disappoint me.”

She stared back.

“You destroyed my life.”

“I gave you a future.”

“You gave me a cage.”

Victor's expression hardened.

He turned toward Dominic.

“Give me the documents.”

“No.”

Victor raised the gun.

“Then someone dies.”

Before Dominic could move, Marcus stepped between them.

“Take me instead.”

Victor smiled.

“I always knew you'd be useful.”

He gestured toward his men.

They seized Marcus and dragged him into the hallway.

Dominic lunged forward, but Victor fired into the ceiling.

“Stay where you are!”

Then Victor backed toward the door.

“You have until tomorrow morning to bring me the original ledger. If you don't, Marcus dies.”

He disappeared into the darkness.

Dominic stood frozen, listening to the fading footsteps.

Vanessa clutched the stolen documents to her chest.

“We have to get him back.”

Dominic stared at the empty doorway.

“We will.”

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

It contained a photograph of Marcus tied to a chair.

Beneath it were six words.

ASK YOUR FATHER WHO REALLY PAID HIM.

Dominic looked toward the mansion, where Antonio waited.

And for the first time, he wondered whether the last person he could trust was the man who had raised him.
