Chapter 1 - THE KEY THAT BROUGHT A DEAD WOMAN BACK

“EMPTY YOUR POCKETS, YOU LITTLE THIEF!” THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE HUMILIATED A POOR MAID IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE HOUSEHOLD. BUT WHEN AN OLD BRASS KEY FELL ONTO THE TABLE, THE MAFIA BOSS'S PARALYZED FATHER BEGAN CRYING. HE REACHED FOR IT WITH TREMBLING HANDS—AND WHISPERED THE NAME OF A WOMAN EVERYONE BELIEVED HAD DISAPPEARED TWENTY YEARS AGO.
“Everything, Rachel. On the table. Now.”
Vanessa Sterling stood in the mansion's dining room, surrounded by silent servants.
Rachel Hayes, twenty-four, lowered her eyes.
“Ma'am, I haven't stolen anything.”
“Then prove it.”
Vanessa pointed toward the marble table.
“A diamond bracelet disappeared from my bedroom. And you were cleaning there.”
Rachel's hands trembled.
She emptied her apron pockets.
A handkerchief.
Two hairpins.
A crumpled grocery receipt.
Then something small struck the marble.
Clink.
An old brass key.
Its surface was scratched, and a tiny rose was engraved near the handle.
Vanessa snatched it up.
“What's this? A key to another room you plan to rob?”
“Please give it back,” Rachel whispered.
Vanessa laughed.
“Why? What are you hiding?”
Suddenly, a wheelchair scraped against the floor.
Antonio Moretti, Dominic's seventy-eight-year-old father, had been sitting silently beside the window.
Now he was leaning forward.
His trembling hand stretched toward the key.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Rose…”
Rachel froze.
Antonio began crying.
“Where did you get that?”
Vanessa frowned.
“Antonio, sit back. You'll hurt yourself.”
But the old man kept reaching.
“Please… give it to me.”
At that moment, Dominic Moretti entered.
Thirty-seven. Dark suit. Cold expression.
He stopped when he saw his father crying.
“Dad?”
Antonio pointed toward Rachel's hand.
Dominic approached.
“What's wrong?”
Vanessa quickly smiled.
“Darling, I caught Rachel hiding a suspicious key.”
Dominic ignored her.
He crouched beside his father.
Antonio was shaking.
Dominic gently took his hand.
“Dad… what does that key open?”
Antonio swallowed.
Then whispered:
“The room where your mother hid the truth.”
The dining room went silent.
Dominic stared.
“My mother died when I was twelve.”
Antonio shook his head.
“No. Not your mother.”
He pointed toward Rachel.
“Rose.”
Rachel's breath caught.
Because Rose Bennett was the woman who'd given her the key.
Three weeks earlier, the elderly woman had died in a small nursing home outside Chicago.
Rachel had cared for her during her final months.
Before dying, Rose had pressed the key into Rachel's palm.
“If you ever work for the Morettis, find Antonio. Tell him I never betrayed him.”
Rachel had thought the woman was confused.
Now Antonio was crying at the sight of her key.
“Rose is dead?” he whispered.
Rachel nodded.
His face crumpled.
“She waited twenty years…”
Dominic turned toward Rachel.
“Who was she?”
Rachel swallowed.
“She told me she once cared for your father.”
Antonio nodded.
“She saved my life.”
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Dominic, this is ridiculous. That woman was dismissed for stealing.”
Antonio struck the armrest of his wheelchair.
“SHE NEVER STOLE ANYTHING!”
Everyone froze.
Dominic slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“How do you know her name?”
Vanessa went pale.
“I… heard stories.”
But Antonio was already pointing toward the key.
“The old house,” he whispered. “Behind the library fireplace.”
Two hours later, Dominic took Rachel and Antonio to the family's abandoned estate.
Behind the library fireplace, they found a small brass lock concealed beneath a loose stone.
Rachel inserted the key.
It turned.
Inside was a metal compartment containing a sealed envelope, a property deed, and an old photograph.
Dominic opened the envelope.
His expression changed.
The deed showed that Antonio had transferred ownership of a valuable lakeside property to a trust twenty years earlier.
Its beneficiary wasn't Dominic.
It was a woman named Rose Bennett.
Attached was a handwritten letter.
Rose protected the documents when my brother tried to seize the estate. If anything happens to me, she is to keep them safe until Dominic is old enough to know the truth.
Dominic stared at his father.
“Your brother?”
Antonio nodded.
“Victor.”
Dominic's uncle.
The man who'd controlled the family finances for decades.
And Vanessa's godfather.
Rachel picked up the photograph.
It showed Rose standing beside Antonio's wheelchair, holding a little boy.
Dominic.
But someone had written a message on the back.
“If Victor ever claims Rose stole from us, ask him why he paid the doctor to change Antonio's records.”
Dominic stopped breathing.
His father's paralysis had always been blamed on a stroke.
Now the letter suggested someone had concealed what happened.
Then Antonio whispered:
“Victor didn't just steal the property.”
Dominic turned.
“What did he do?”
The old man's eyes filled.
“He made everyone believe Rose had poisoned me.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
Antonio looked at the key.
“She kept the evidence. That's why he forced her to disappear.”
Dominic slowly stood.
His face hardened.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
Don't open anything else in that compartment.
Dominic stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
“Victor says the second envelope contains something that could destroy your father's reputation.”
Dominic looked back inside the hidden compartment.
Beneath the deed was another envelope.
Sealed with black wax.
Across the front, in Antonio's handwriting, were five words:
FOR DOMINIC—WHEN YOU LEARN WHO LIED.
Dominic slowly lifted it.
And Antonio began crying again.
Because the first envelope explained why Rose had disappeared.
But the second contained the truth about the night Dominic's mother died.
