Chapter 7 - THE HEIR WHO NEVER EXISTED

Luca had grown up as an only child.

There were no childhood photographs of a brother, no second name on the family tree, no grave hidden among the Moretti family plots. Yet Whitaker's final words echoed through his mind as he stood over the dead lawyer.

“What brother?” Marco asked.

Luca had no answer.

The next morning, he demanded the truth from Antonio.

His father sat in the sunroom, pale and exhausted. When Luca placed Whitaker's letter before him, Antonio's hands began to shake.

“His name was Michael,” he finally said. “Your younger brother.”

Luca stared at him. “You told me I was an only child.”

“Michael was born prematurely. Your mother believed he died at the hospital. Richard arranged for him to be moved to another facility, where he was adopted under a different name.”

“Why?”

Antonio's voice broke. “Because the succession agreement named Michael as the heir. Your grandfather believed the younger child would be easier to protect from the family's enemies.”

“Protect him from whom? You?”

“From all of us.”

Antonio explained that his father had created a private trust for Michael, one that would transfer control of the legitimate family assets when he turned thirty. Richard had discovered the agreement and planned the crash to seize the trust before Michael could be found.

“Did you know Michael was alive?” Luca asked.

“I suspected it. Franklin found an adoption record, but before he could tell me where the boy was, he was killed.”

“Then why did you never look for him?”

“Because Richard told me Michael had died years earlier. I wanted to believe him.”

Luca stepped back, furious.

“Everyone in this family has used fear as an excuse to abandon someone.”

Antonio lowered his head.

“I know.”

The adoption record was hidden in the old house Vanessa had identified. Luca and Sophie traveled there with Marco and Daniel Price. The property stood empty behind a rusted gate, its windows covered with plywood. In a bedroom upstairs, they found a small wooden horse and a child's drawing of two men holding hands beneath a crooked sun.

On the back was a name: Michael Moretti.

They also found letters addressed to a social worker. One had been returned unopened. Another contained a photograph of a young man standing beside a woman with the same gray eyes as Luca.

The woman was Eleanor.

She had visited Michael after escaping Richard's control, but she had never been able to bring him home.

“She was trying to protect him,” Sophie whispered.

“Or she was afraid of what would happen if she did,” Luca replied.

The distinction mattered. He was no longer willing to accept noble explanations without proof.

Daniel Price traced the adoption records to a small town in Pennsylvania. The child had been adopted by a couple named James and Laura Reed. They had raised him under the name Michael Reed.

Thomas recognized the surname immediately.

“My cousin lived in Pennsylvania,” he said. “He and his wife couldn't have children.”

Luca looked at him. “You knew?”

“I knew they adopted a boy. I never knew who he was.”

For the first time, the web of secrets seemed to connect to something ordinary: a couple who had wanted a child, a boy who had grown up loved, and a family that had turned him into a weapon without his knowledge.

They found Michael working as an emergency physician at a hospital outside Philadelphia. He was thirty-two, married, and the father of a four-year-old daughter.

When Luca introduced himself, Michael stared at him in disbelief.

“I don't know you.”

“You're my brother.”

Michael's expression hardened. “My parents told me I was adopted. They never said anything about the Morettis.”

“They may not have known the full story.”

“My life is here. I have a wife. A daughter. Patients who depend on me. I don't want your money or your business.”

“I didn't come to offer either.”

“Then why are you here?”

Luca struggled to answer honestly.

“Because people died to keep you hidden. And I don't want another person in this family to disappear.”

Michael looked at him for a long time.

Then he asked the question Luca had feared.

“Did you know our father was involved?”

Luca did not lie.

“I know he signed documents that helped Richard take control. I don't yet know how much he understood.”

“Then find out before asking me to trust you.”

Michael closed the door.

On the drive back, Luca said nothing. Sophie watched the highway lights pass across his face.

“You did the right thing,” she told him.

“He shut the door.”

“He has a right to.”

Luca looked at her. “You always find a way to defend people.”

“No. I find a way to remember they're people.”

Before he could respond, Marco called.

Richard had been located at a private airfield. The police were moving in, but he had already boarded a plane.

More importantly, they had discovered the name of the person funding his escape.

It was not an offshore company.

It was a living member of the Moretti family.

And the account had been opened in Sophie's name.
