Chapter 1 - THE BREAD THAT EXPOSED A FAMILY'S DARKEST SECRET

“SHE STEALS FOOD EVERY NIGHT!” THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE SHOUTED, DRAGGING A YOUNG MAID BEFORE THEIR DINNER GUESTS. THE GIRL STOOD TREMBLING, CLUTCHING A WORN BAG OF BREAD. BUT WHEN THE MAFIA BOSS'S PARALYZED FATHER SAW THE BAG, HE BEGAN CRYING—AND REVEALED WHO THE MAID HAD BEEN FEEDING.

“Open it, Sophie.”

Vanessa Sterling pointed at the paper bag in the maid's arms.

Twenty-three-year-old Sophie Bennett stood frozen in the mansion's dining room.

Twenty wealthy guests watched silently.

“Please, ma'am,” Sophie whispered. “It's just leftover bread.”

Vanessa snatched the bag.

Several rolls tumbled onto the marble floor.

“See? She's been stealing from us for weeks!”

Sophie knelt to collect them.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Please don't throw them away.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Are you really that desperate?”

Suddenly, a deep voice interrupted.

“What's happening here?”

Luca Moretti entered the dining room.

Thirty-eight. Black suit. Cold gray eyes.

Vanessa hurried toward him.

“Darling, she steals food every night!”

Luca looked at Sophie.

“Is that true?”

Sophie lowered her head.

“Yes, sir.”

The guests murmured.

Vanessa smiled triumphantly.

“Fire her.”

But before Luca could respond, a trembling voice came from the head of the table.

“She's been feeding the man who saved my life.”

Everyone turned.

Antonio Moretti, Luca's seventy-nine-year-old father, sat in his wheelchair.

Tears were running down his face.

Luca approached him.

“Dad?”

Antonio pointed toward the bread.

“His name is Thomas Reed.”

Luca frowned.

“Who?”

“My driver. The man who pulled me out of that burning car twenty years ago.”

Luca went still.

He remembered the accident.

His father had survived.

But the family driver had been accused of causing the crash and dismissed.

“He disappeared,” Luca whispered.

Antonio shook his head.

“He's been living outside our gates.”

Sophie began crying.

“I found him sleeping behind the old guardhouse three weeks ago.”

Luca turned toward her.

“He told me he hadn't eaten in two days,” she continued. “So I brought him bread.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Sophie swallowed.

“Because Mrs. Sterling said she'd call security if she caught me helping him.”

Vanessa's smile vanished.

“That's ridiculous!”

Antonio struck the armrest of his wheelchair.

“Thomas saved my life! He carried me through fire when everyone else ran!”

His voice broke.

“And I let my family throw him away.”

Luca slowly picked up the bread.

Then looked at Sophie.

“You're not fired.”

Vanessa stared.

“Luca!”

He ignored her.

“Take me to him.”

Twenty minutes later, Luca found Thomas Reed sitting beneath a broken streetlight near the estate gates.

The sixty-eight-year-old man wore a threadbare coat.

His hands were cracked from the cold.

When he saw Antonio's wheelchair approaching, he struggled to stand.

“Mr. Moretti?”

Antonio began crying.

“Thomas.”

The old driver lowered his head.

“I'm sorry about the accident, sir.”

Antonio reached for his hand.

“You saved me.”

Thomas shook his head.

“But they said I caused it.”

Luca stepped forward.

“Who told you that?”

Thomas looked frightened.

“Your uncle, Richard.”

Luca froze.

Richard Moretti had controlled the family's finances for twenty years.

And he was the man who had arranged Vanessa's engagement to Luca.

Thomas reached into his coat.

“I kept something.”

He pulled out an old photograph.

A black sedan parked outside the family garage.

Taken hours before the crash.

Luca studied it.

Then noticed something strange.

The front wheel had been removed.

Two men stood beside the exposed brake assembly.

One wore a mechanic's uniform.

The other wore an expensive gray coat.

Luca's blood ran cold.

He recognized the man in the coat.

Richard Moretti.

His uncle.

Thomas whispered:

“I took that photograph because I thought the repairs were suspicious.”

Luca stared.

“What happened afterward?”

Thomas swallowed.

“Richard ordered me to drive your father anyway. He said the car was perfectly safe.”

Antonio began trembling.

Thomas continued.

“Halfway down the mountain road, the brakes stopped responding.”

Luca looked at the photograph again.

Then asked:

“Why didn't you show this to the police?”

Thomas's eyes filled.

“I tried.”

His voice broke.

“But Richard told them I was drunk. He said if I kept talking, my daughter would disappear.”

Sophie covered her mouth.

Luca's expression hardened.

“Where is your daughter now?”

Thomas looked down.

“She vanished six months after the accident.”

The night went silent.

Then Thomas reached into his coat again.

“I kept one more thing.”

A small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a little girl.

And a handwritten name.

VANESSA REED — AGE 12.

Luca stared.

“Vanessa?”

Thomas nodded.

“My daughter.”

Luca stopped breathing.

Because the woman he'd planned to marry had told him her parents died when she was a teenager.

Thomas's hands began trembling.

“She came to see me last week.”

Luca looked up sharply.

“What?”

Thomas swallowed.

“She told me to stop accepting food from Sophie.”

“Why?”

Tears filled the old man's eyes.

“Because she said if you ever discovered who I was, you'd start asking questions about the accident.”

Luca slowly turned toward the mansion.

Its windows glowed warmly in the distance.

Vanessa was still inside.

Waiting for him.

And suddenly, the accusation against Sophie made perfect sense.

She hadn't been stealing bread.

She'd been keeping alive the one witness Vanessa desperately wanted to disappear.

Then Thomas gripped Luca's wrist.

“There's something else.”

Luca looked down.

“What?”

Thomas pointed toward the photograph.

“The man standing beside Richard wasn't a mechanic.”

Luca frowned.

“Who was he?”

Thomas's voice dropped.

“He was the man your father trusted most.”

Luca stared at him.

And Antonio, who had been silent until then, suddenly whispered:

“No… that can't be.”

Because he recognized the second man too.

And if Thomas was telling the truth, the accident that left Antonio in a wheelchair hadn't been an accident at all.
