Chapter 3 - The Son Who Never Died

The hospital bracelet felt impossibly cold in Emily's palm.

Luca took it from her.

“Where did you find this?”

“Inside the envelope.”

He examined the tiny plastic band.

Michael Moretti.

October 4.

Tomorrow's date.

His brother had supposedly been born thirteen years earlier.

“Someone is playing games with us,” Luca muttered.

Antonio shook his head.

“No. This is how they communicated when they wanted to leave a message without writing a name.”

“What does that mean?”

“Your mother used to say that Michael was born twice.”

Luca looked at him.

“Explain.”

Antonio sat on the staircase.

“Michael was declared dead three days after birth. But the funeral director who handled the arrangements told me privately that the hospital had never released a body.”

Luca stared.

“Then what did we bury?”

Antonio looked away.

“Someone else's child.”

The revelation landed like a physical blow.

“My brother was alive this entire time?”

“I believe so.”

“And you knew?”

“I suspected. I spent years trying to find him.”

Luca grabbed his father's shoulder.

“Then why didn't you come home?”

Antonio's eyes filled with tears.

“Because every time I got close, someone sent me a photograph of you.”

He pulled another picture from his bag.

It showed Luca entering his private garage.

The photograph had been taken from inside the building.

Written beneath it were six words:

Come home, and your son dies.

Luca frowned.

“I don't have a son.”

Antonio looked at him.

“You don't remember?”

A strange silence filled the hallway.

Before Luca could answer, Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase.

She was no longer crying.

Her expression had changed.

“Luca, we need to talk.”

He looked up.

“Not another word until you tell me why my mother is calling you a liar.”

Vanessa descended slowly.

“Because she has never wanted you to know what happened to Michael.”

Antonio stood.

“Don't listen to her.”

Vanessa ignored him.

“Your father wasn't protecting you thirteen years ago. He was protecting himself.”

Luca turned toward Antonio.

“Is that true?”

Antonio's silence was answer enough.

Vanessa continued.

“Your father was involved in a deal with the Bellini family. When it went wrong, someone was killed. The Moretti family needed a body to bury, and Antonio arranged it.”

“Whose body?”

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I don't know.”

Antonio stepped forward.

“That's enough.”

“No!” Vanessa shouted. “You don't get to walk back into this family and pretend you're the victim!”

Luca's voice dropped.

“Why did you scream when you saw him?”

Vanessa's eyes moved toward the front doors.

“Because I thought he had come to kill me.”

“Why?”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then Emily spoke.

“Because she recognized him.”

Everyone turned.

Emily looked frightened but determined.

“I found another photograph in the basement.”

She handed Luca a picture of Vanessa standing outside a hospital.

Beside her was a man in a medical coat.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

Luca studied their faces.

“When was this taken?”

Emily pointed to the date.

October 3, thirteen years earlier.

Vanessa was much younger, but unmistakable.

Luca slowly raised his eyes.

“You were there.”

Vanessa backed away.

“I was nineteen.”

“You knew my father?”

“I worked for the hospital.”

“And Dr. Reed?”

She didn't answer.

Antonio approached her.

“Tell him about the baby.”

Vanessa slapped him.

The sound echoed through the hallway.

“Don't you dare!”

Luca grabbed her wrist.

“What baby?”

Vanessa struggled.

“Let go!”

“WHAT BABY?”

She finally broke.

“Michael wasn't the only child born that night!”

Antonio closed his eyes.

Luca stared at her.

“Who was the other child?”

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“You.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Luca released her.

“What?”

“You were supposed to be dead, too.”

Antonio sat down heavily.

Luca turned toward him.

“Tell me she's lying.”

His father couldn't meet his eyes.

“Your mother made a deal to save both of you.”

“What deal?”

Antonio looked at the ceiling.

“She agreed to disappear in exchange for Michael's life.”

Luca felt his chest tighten.

“You let her go?”

“I had no choice.”

“You let me believe she was dead?”

“I thought she was.”

Luca laughed once, without humor.

“You thought? You thought your wife was dead? You thought your sons were dead? What exactly did you know?”

Antonio began crying.

For the first time, Luca saw not the feared head of the Moretti family, but an exhausted old man who had spent thirteen years running from his own mistakes.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

“There's something else.”

Luca turned.

“What now?”

She looked at the hospital bracelet.

“Michael wasn't taken away by your enemies.”

Antonio looked up sharply.

Vanessa swallowed.

“He was raised by someone inside this house.”

Luca slowly looked around the mansion.

The familiar portraits.

The servants.

The family photographs.

The old staircase.

“Who?”

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“Your mother.”

Luca stared at her.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if you understand what happened afterward.”

She reached into her evening bag and pulled out a folded document.

It was an adoption certificate.

The child had been registered under another name.

But the signature at the bottom belonged to Isabella Moretti.

Luca looked at the name given to the child.

Michael had become Daniel Reed.

“Reed?” Luca whispered.

Vanessa nodded.

“Dr. Samuel Reed adopted him.”

Antonio suddenly grabbed the paper.

“This is impossible.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Then explain why your wife paid him every month for thirteen years.”

A loud crash came from the basement.

Everyone turned.

A moment later, a terrified housekeeper ran upstairs.

“Mr. Moretti! Someone is down there!”

Luca pulled a pistol from his waistband.

“Stay here.”

He ran down the stairs with two guards.

The basement door was open.

Inside, the lights flickered.

A chair stood in the middle of the room.

Someone had been tied to it.

Luca approached cautiously.

Then he recognized the face.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

The missing doctor.

His mouth was covered with tape.

His wrists were bleeding.

Luca ripped the tape away.

“Who brought you here?”

Reed gasped for air.

“Your mother.”

“Where is she?”

The doctor shook his head.

“She said I had to tell you the truth.”

“What truth?”

Reed looked past Luca.

At the doorway.

At Antonio.

Then his eyes filled with terror.

“Mr. Moretti, you need to know something.”

“What?”

“Your father didn't disappear thirteen years ago.”

Luca frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Reed whispered:

“He was arrested.”

Antonio went completely still.

“And the man who came home tonight…”

The doctor swallowed.

“Isn't the man who escaped.”

Suddenly, the basement lights went out.

A gunshot rang through the darkness.

When the emergency lights came on, Dr. Reed was dead.

And Antonio was gone.
