Chapter 10 - The Family That Rose From Three Graves

Luca heard footsteps approaching.

He raised his gun.

Gabriel stood beside him.

“Don't shoot,” Gabriel whispered.

“Why?”

“Because he's holding the detonator.”

A small red light appeared in the darkness.

Adrian stepped into view.

He was smiling.

Behind him stood two armed men.

“Family reunion number three,” he said.

Luca stared at him.

“Where is my mother?”

Adrian pointed toward a second door.

“Right where Gabriel said.”

“Open it.”

“First, the will.”

Luca shook his head.

“You already have it.”

“No. I have a copy. I want the original.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“Give it up, Adrian.”

Adrian laughed.

“You always were the disappointment.”

Gabriel's face hardened.

“You told me I was your son.”

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

Luca looked between them.

“You used your own child?”

Adrian shrugged.

“I used everyone.”

Then he raised the detonator.

“Now give me the will.”

Luca slowly placed the document on the table.

Adrian approached.

He examined the signature.

Then smiled.

“Finally.”

He reached for the paper.

Luca pressed a hidden button beneath the table.

The chapel's emergency lights came on.

The two guards immediately turned toward the entrance.

A team of federal agents stormed the room.

“Drop your weapons!”

Adrian tried to run.

Gabriel tackled him.

The detonator flew across the floor.

Luca grabbed it.

One of the agents restrained Adrian.

The room fell silent.

For the first time in thirteen years, the man who had controlled the Moretti family was finally in handcuffs.

But Luca wasn't finished.

He rushed toward the second door.

Inside was a small underground chamber.

A woman sat on a chair.

Her hair was gray.

Her face was pale.

But she was alive.

“Mom?”

Isabella slowly raised her head.

For a moment, she didn't recognize him.

Then she whispered:

“Luca?”

He ran to her.

She wrapped her arms around him.

He held her like he had been waiting his entire life for that moment.

“I thought I lost you.”

“I know, sweetheart.”

“Why didn't you come home?”

“Because I was afraid they'd take you again.”

Luca pulled away.

“Who?”

Isabella looked toward the doorway.

“Your grandfather.”

Luca frowned.

“He died years ago.”

She nodded.

“That's what everyone believes.”

The words made the room go cold.

Isabella explained that the original patriarch of the Moretti family had never died.

He had staged his death and continued controlling the family from behind the scenes.

Adrian had been his chosen successor.

Antonio had been the son who refused.

And Daniel Hart had been the man who knew too much.

“Where is he?” Luca asked.

Isabella shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Luca helped her stand.

“Then we'll find him.”

They returned to the chapel.

Adrian was being escorted away.

He stopped when he saw Isabella.

“You should have stayed buried.”

She looked at him.

“You should have stayed forgotten.”

Adrian smiled.

“You still don't understand.”

He turned toward Luca.

“Your grandfather didn't create this family to protect you.”

“What did he want?”

Adrian leaned closer.

“To find the child who inherited everything.”

Luca looked toward Gabriel.

Then toward Isabella.

“What child?”

Adrian smiled.

“The third son.”

Before anyone could question him, an agent pushed him forward.

But the words stayed with Luca.

The third son.

Gabriel was standing near the doorway.

He looked uncomfortable.

Luca approached him.

“Are you coming with us?”

Gabriel nodded.

“If you'll have me.”

Luca extended his hand.

“You're my brother.”

Gabriel hesitated.

Then shook it.

For the first time, Luca felt that he might have a family again.

Three days later, Antonio was released from medical care.

He was weak, but alive.

Michael had also recovered from his injuries.

Vanessa visited the mansion once before leaving the country.

She apologized to Luca.

He didn't forgive her immediately.

But he listened.

She had spent years being controlled by the same people who had destroyed his family.

Sometimes survival made people do terrible things.

Luca understood that.

He gave her enough money to start over, but refused to let her return to his life.

The engagement was officially canceled.

The succession agreement was destroyed.

The Moretti fortune was placed into a trust shared by Luca and Michael.

Gabriel was given a place in the family.

Antonio moved into the mansion.

And Isabella finally returned to the bedroom she had left thirteen years earlier.

For the first time, the house was filled with something other than fear.

One evening, Luca stood beside the fireplace.

His father approached.

“You look like your grandfather when you're thinking.”

Luca smiled faintly.

“I hope that's not a bad thing.”

Antonio placed a hand on his shoulder.

“It's only bad if you become him.”

They stood together in silence.

Then Michael entered.

He held an old photograph.

It showed the three brothers as newborns.

But there was something strange.

A fourth shadow appeared in the background.

Michael turned the photograph over.

A message had been written beneath it.

Three sons were born. Four were taken.

Luca looked up.

“Where did you get this?”

Michael shook his head.

“It was inside my hospital records.”

Antonio took the photograph.

His face changed immediately.

He sat down.

“Dad?”

Antonio stared at the image.

Then he whispered:

“No…”

“What is it?”

Antonio looked toward Isabella.

She had entered the room.

The moment she saw the photograph, she stopped walking.

Her hand went to her mouth.

Luca felt his stomach tighten.

“Mom?”

She slowly approached.

Then she touched the fourth shadow.

And began to cry.

“There's someone I never told you about.”

“Who?”

Isabella looked at her sons.

“Your sister.”

The room fell silent.

Michael stared at her.

“We had a sister?”

Isabella nodded.

“She was born before you.”

Luca frowned.

“Where is she?”

His mother looked toward the window.

“I thought she was dead.”

Antonio stood abruptly.

“Isabella, don't.”

She turned toward him.

“It's time.”

Luca stepped closer.

“Time for what?”

Isabella opened her handbag and removed a small black envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a young woman standing outside the Moretti mansion.

She looked almost exactly like Luca.

Same eyes.

Same dark hair.

Same small scar above the left eyebrow.

On the back was a name.

Sophia Moretti.

And beneath it was a message.

I know what happened to my brothers. Now it's your turn to know what happened to me.

Luca stared at the photograph.

His phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A single message appeared.

Congratulations on getting your family back, Luca.

A second message followed.

But you buried the wrong woman, too.

Luca slowly looked toward the staircase.

At the top stood Emily.

She was holding a small package.

Her face was pale.

“Mr. Moretti?”

He turned.

“What is it?”

Emily swallowed.

“This arrived for you.”

Luca opened the package.

Inside was a gold wedding ring.

The same ring his father had carried into the engagement party.

But this one had a different engraving.

S.M. — OCTOBER 4.

He looked at Antonio.

His father had gone completely white.

Then Antonio whispered:

“She's alive.”

“Who?”

Antonio raised his eyes.

May you like

And for the first time in thirteen years, the feared head of the Moretti family looked genuinely terrified.

“Your grandmother.”
