Chapter 9 - A CHOICE NO MONEY COULD BUY

One year later, Victor stood before a courtroom.

The old financial crimes had been fully exposed.

His father's former associates faced prosecution.

Michael Bennett's name was officially cleared.

Adrian's death was formally reopened.

And Victor had transformed the remnants of his business empire.

No more illegal operations.

No hidden accounts.

No secret enforcers.

His new company specialized in logistics and medical transportation.

Part of its profits funded treatment for families who couldn't afford it.

Tommy became one of the first scholarship recipients.

He eventually returned to school.

Chloe finished nursing school.

Victor attended every graduation lecture.

He sat in the back.

She always found him.

Their relationship had survived suspicion, scandal, poverty, and a past neither had created.

But there was one thing Chloe didn't know.

Victor had bought a ring.

He had hidden it for three months.

Not because he was afraid of her answer.

Because he wanted to ask correctly.

One evening, he took her to the little house where they had first lived after leaving the mansion.

The backyard was covered in tiny lights.

Chloe looked around.

"What is this?"

Victor took her hand.

"I wanted to show you something."

He pointed toward a wooden structure.

She walked closer.

A small clinic stood behind the house.

A sign hung above the door.

THE MICHAEL BENNETT FAMILY HEALTH CENTER

Chloe covered her mouth.

"You did this?"

"With your help."

"My help?"

"You taught me what mattered."

She turned toward him.

Victor dropped to one knee.

Chloe froze.

"Victor."

"I've spent most of my life believing love was a weakness."

He opened the box.

"I was wrong."

Her eyes filled.

"I don't want to own your life."

He looked up at her.

"I don't want to protect you by controlling you."

He smiled.

"I want to stand beside you."

Chloe began crying.

"Victor..."

"Marry me?"

She laughed through her tears.

"You're supposed to wait until I say yes."

He blinked.

"Yes."

He smiled.

"That was fast."

"You've already waited long enough."

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

She kissed him.

Behind them, Tommy shouted:

"FINALLY!"

They turned.

Tommy stood near the house with Mrs. Gable, Marco, and several friends.

Chloe laughed.

"You planned this?"

Victor looked embarrassed.

"Apparently."

Mrs. Gable smiled.

"You needed assistance."

Victor sighed.

"I've been betrayed by my own staff."

Everyone laughed.

For once, the laughter wasn't nervous.

It was real.

Then Chloe noticed something.

A second envelope rested on the clinic's front desk.

No name.

No return address.

Her smile faded.

"Victor."

He opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of his late father.

Standing beside another man.

A man Victor didn't recognize.

On the back were six words.

Your father had one more secret.

Victor stared at the photograph.

Chloe stepped beside him.

"What is it?"

He looked at her.

"I don't know."

She took his hand.

"Then we'll find out."

Victor smiled.

The past wasn't finished.

May you like

But for the first time, he wasn't afraid of it.

Because he no longer stood alone.
