Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY CAME HOME

Victor lost almost everything.

Not literally.

But enough.

The mansion was sold.

Several businesses were closed.

His private aircraft was gone.

His cars disappeared one by one.

The newspapers celebrated his downfall.

For the first time in years, Victor walked through a grocery store without security.

Nobody recognized him.

Chloe found it amusing.

"You look nervous."

"I've negotiated with armed men."

"And you're afraid of buying cereal?"

"There are seventeen kinds."

She laughed.

He smiled.

They rented a modest house outside the city.

It had a small kitchen.

A narrow staircase.

A backyard.

Victor hated it for approximately three days.

Then he started liking it.

Because Chloe was there.

Tommy moved in after his treatment stabilized.

Victor helped arrange a scholarship for him.

But he insisted the money come through a legitimate foundation.

Tommy eventually asked him:

"Are you really a mafia boss?"

Victor looked at Chloe.

She tried not to laugh.

"I used to have a complicated career."

Tommy grinned.

"That's a yes."

Victor shook his head.

The family slowly became something neither had expected.

Chloe cooked.

Victor burned pancakes.

Tommy complained.

They laughed.

For the first time in his life, Victor had a home where nobody was afraid of him.

Then the phone rang.

Marco.

"Elias Hale has been arrested."

Victor stood.

"How?"

"Vanessa turned over evidence."

Victor closed his eyes.

"Why?"

"She said she finally understood what her father had done."

Later, Vanessa requested one meeting.

Chloe knew Victor didn't want to go.

"You don't owe her anything."

"I know."

"But?"

Victor sighed.

"I need closure."

He met Vanessa in a quiet café.

She looked different.

No designer clothes.

No carefully controlled smile.

Just exhaustion.

"I ruined everything," she said.

Victor didn't respond.

"I thought if I controlled your life, eventually you'd love me."

"That's not love."

"I know."

She looked down.

"My father used me."

Victor's expression softened slightly.

"You still made choices."

"I know."

Vanessa gave him a flash drive.

"Your brother recorded something before he died."

Victor stared.

"Where did you get this?"

"My father kept it."

Victor took it.

That recording proved the final truth.

Adrian had discovered everything.

He had also left one message.

Victor played it that night.

His brother's voice filled the room.

"If you're hearing this, Victor, I'm sorry."

Victor's eyes closed.

"Don't become Dad."

The recording continued.

"Build something that doesn't require fear."

Victor broke down.

Chloe sat beside him.

He leaned against her shoulder.

For the first time, he allowed himself to cry.

She didn't say anything.

She simply held him.

And that was what Victor had needed all along.

May you like

Not someone to save him.

Someone willing to stay while he saved himself.
