Chapter 7 - The BetrayalDavid had memorized the ledger.

Every name.
Every account.
Every transaction.
But someone inside our group betrayed us.
We discovered it when our safe location was attacked.
Alessandro immediately suspected one of his men.
I suspected everyone.
Then Logan disappeared.
For thirty-seven seconds.
That was all.
Thirty-seven seconds.
But those seconds nearly destroyed me.
I found him in a storage room.
He was sitting with Captain Bear.
A woman stood over him.
Evelyn.
She had escaped.
She smiled.
"Your husband ruined everything."
I grabbed Logan.
"Stay away from my son."
Evelyn raised her weapon.
Then Alessandro appeared.
"Drop it."
Evelyn laughed.
"You still think you're the hero?"
"No."
Alessandro aimed his weapon.
"I'm the man who knows exactly what you are."
Evelyn looked at David.
"You really chose her?"
David stepped forward.
"I chose my family."
Evelyn's expression cracked.
"After everything I did for you?"
"You betrayed me."
She lowered the weapon.
"I loved you."
David shook his head.
"You loved control."
Evelyn suddenly fired.
Alessandro moved.
The shot struck his shoulder.
He fell.
David tackled Evelyn.
Security arrived.
She was finally restrained.
Alessandro was bleeding.
I ran to him.
"Are you okay?"
He smiled.
"I've had worse."
"You're insane."
"Probably."
He looked at Logan.
"He's safe."
That was all he cared about.
Later, investigators arrived.
The evidence was transferred.
Arrests began.
The network collapsed.
But there was still one problem.
My father.
He was dead.
And I had spent my entire life believing he was a good man.
Now I knew he wasn't.
David sat beside me.
"You don't have to forgive him."
"I don't."
"You don't have to carry his sins."
I looked at him.
"I won't."
Then I looked at Logan.
"My son will know the truth."
May you like
David smiled.
"That's all that matters."
