Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the GlassWe drove to Virginia that night.

The location was an abandoned research facility.
Evelyn entered first.
Alessandro stayed beside me.
"Whatever happens, stay behind me."
"I've spent two years believing my husband was dead."
He looked at me.
"I'm not hiding anymore."
We entered.
A man sat behind reinforced glass.
His back was toward us.
Evelyn whispered:
"David."
He turned.
I stopped breathing.
It was him.
Older.
Thinner.
A scar crossed his cheek.
But it was David.
My David.
I pressed my hand against the glass.
He stood.
His eyes filled with tears.
"Catherine."
I couldn't move.
Then Logan woke.
"Daddy?"
David collapsed into a chair.
I began crying.
The door opened.
I ran inside.
David caught me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he held Logan.
"My boy."
Logan stared.
"You're Daddy."
David kissed his forehead.
"I'm sorry."
Logan touched his face.
"Where were you?"
David looked at me.
"Trying to keep you alive."
I stepped backward.
"You let me bury you."
"I had to."
"You let me raise our son alone."
"I know."
"You watched us suffer."
"I know."
"Then explain."
David closed his eyes.
"Your father ordered my death."
I froze.
"He discovered I had turned against him."
David continued.
"Alessandro helped me disappear."
"Why didn't you come back?"
"Because the network was still active."
"Who runs it now?"
David looked at Alessandro.
"Her."
I frowned.
"Who?"
David pointed toward Evelyn.
I turned.
Evelyn's face had changed.
Alessandro reached for his weapon.
David continued.
"She was never my handler."
Evelyn smiled.
"David."
"You betrayed us."
She raised a gun.
Everything happened at once.
Alessandro moved.
A shot exploded.
Evelyn ran.
David pulled me down.
Security chased her.
I held Logan.
My hands shook.
"Why?"
David looked at me.
"Because she wanted the ledger."
"Where is it?"
He stared at me.
"Inside the ring."
I looked down.
The second ring.
"What?"
"The engraving is a code."
Alessandro took it.
"Then we finally have it."
David nodded.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because the ring only opens the ledger."
"Where?"
May you like
David looked at me.
"At your father's grave."
