Chapter 10 - The Family They Tried to Destroy

“GET DOWN!”
Adrian shoved his wheelchair toward me.
The first bullet shattered the living-room window.
My mother screamed.
I pulled her behind the sofa while Adrian reached for the pistol Marco had left in his security case.
The front door opened.
Marco entered slowly.
His weapon was raised.
“I'm sorry, Boss.”
Adrian stared at him.
“You?”
Marco lowered his head.
“My father worked for Victor. Richard paid him to keep you alive until the right moment.”
“You were my friend.”
“I know.”
“You watched me lose six months of my life.”
Marco's jaw tightened.
“You were supposed to die in that car.”
Adrian's face became terrifyingly calm.
“But I didn't.”
Marco aimed at him.
Before he could fire, Lily appeared from the hallway.
She had been sleeping in the back seat and had followed us inside.
“Don't hurt Mr. Adrian!”
Everyone froze.
Lily held Teddy tightly against her chest.
Then she threw the teddy bear toward Marco.
It struck his wrist.
The gun fell.
Adrian moved.
His right hand grabbed the edge of the table, and he forced himself upright.
His legs trembled violently.
For six months, his body had refused to obey him.
But now, fueled by desperation, he took one step.
Then another.
Marco lunged for his weapon.
Adrian reached him first.
They crashed against the wall.
The gun slid across the floor.
I grabbed it and pushed it away.
Within seconds, Adrian had Marco pinned.
“Why?” he growled.
Marco struggled.
“Because the real heir was never supposed to be you!”
Adrian went still.
Marco continued.
“Daniel had a son, too. Victor hid him. The entire family fortune belongs to him!”
Before Adrian could respond, sirens sounded outside.
Federal agents entered the property.
They had been following the financial records Marco had secretly transferred to Richard.
Marco was arrested.
And the final piece of the mystery arrived with the lead investigator.
A man in his late fifties stepped inside.
He had dark hair, gray at the temples, and the same piercing eyes as Adrian.
My mother began crying.
“Daniel…”
The man looked at her.
Then at Adrian.
“My boy.”
Adrian stared.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he whispered:
“Uncle Daniel?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I'm your father.”
Adrian's face crumpled.
He reached for him.
Daniel embraced his son.
The man who had spent six months believing his life was over finally cried in the arms of the father he thought was dead.
The truth was finally complete.
Daniel had survived the shooting, escaped Victor's network, and spent years gathering evidence against the people who had destroyed his family.
He had never known Grace was still alive.
And he had never known the twins had survived.
The federal investigation exposed Richard's financial crimes, the attempted assassinations, the falsified death records, and the conspiracy surrounding Isabella's death.
Sophie agreed to testify.
She lost her claim to the Romano fortune and faced charges for her role in the conspiracy. But before leaving, she asked to speak to me.
“I know I don't deserve forgiveness,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“No. You don't.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But you're still my sister. I hope one day you become someone who doesn't need to hurt people to feel important.”
She nodded.
Then she walked away.
Months passed.
Adrian underwent intensive rehabilitation.
The first time he walked across the mansion's living room without assistance, Lily cheered louder than anyone.
“YOU DID IT, MR. ADRIAN!”
He laughed.
Then he knelt carefully in front of her.
“You helped me do it, princess.”
She placed Teddy in his arms.
“You can keep him when you're sad.”
Adrian looked at me.
“Does that mean I have to share him?”
I smiled.
“Only if you promise to take good care of him.”
He nodded solemnly.
“I promise.”
The mansion changed after that.
The bedroom curtains stayed open. Music returned to the hallways. The old chapel was restored, and Isabella's photograph was placed beside a new family portrait.
My mother moved into the guesthouse.
Daniel visited every Sunday.
And Adrian slowly became more than the feared mafia boss everyone knew.
He became a man who laughed with a little girl, learned to make pancakes, and never missed a bedtime story.
One evening, I found him standing beside the window, holding the silver bracelet.
“Thinking about Isabella?” I asked.
He nodded.
“And about everything we lost.”
I stood beside him.
“Maybe we can't get back what happened.”
He looked at me.
“But we can decide what happens next.”
He reached for my hand.
“Grace, I don't want you working for this family anymore.”
My heart sank.
“Why?”
“Because I want you to stay because you want to. Not because you need a paycheck.”
He took a breath.
“I love you. And I love Lily. I know I have a lot to make up for, but I'd like the chance.”
I smiled through my tears.
“You should probably ask Lily first.”
A tiny voice came from behind us.
“Mommy, I already said yes!”
We turned.
Lily stood in the doorway wearing her pink princess dress.
Teddy was tucked under one arm.
Adrian laughed and opened his arms.
She ran straight into them.
Six months earlier, the most feared mafia boss in New York couldn't move a finger.
Now, he was holding the two people who had given him a reason to live.
And on the following spring morning, beneath the silver rose stained-glass window, Adrian Romano asked me to become his wife.
I said yes.
Lily served as our flower girl, carrying Teddy down the aisle in a tiny pink bow tie.
As Adrian slipped the ring onto my finger, he whispered:
“Your mother gave you a bracelet that brought us together.”
I smiled.
“And my daughter gave you a reason to stand again.”
He kissed my forehead.
“No, Grace. She reminded me I was still worth saving.”
For the first time in twenty-eight years, our family was whole.

And the little girl who once walked into a room to comfort a crying mafia boss became the reason an entire family finally found its way home.
THE END.
