Chapter 1 - The Little Girl Who Made a Mafia Boss Cry

“Don't cry, Mister. Mommy says brave people cry too.”

I heard my four-year-old daughter whisper those words while wiping tears from the face of New York's most feared mafia boss. For six months, twenty-six-year-old Adrian Romano had been paralyzed after an assassination attempt, unable to move his legs and barely speaking to anyone. But when my little girl placed her teddy bear beside him, his fingers suddenly moved, and the secret he discovered minutes later made him order every gate of his mansion locked.

My name is Grace Miller. I'm twenty-eight, a single mother working as a housekeeper for the powerful Romano mafia family.

My daughter, Lily, was my entire world.

She had soft brown curls, enormous blue eyes, rosy cheeks, and a smile that could brighten the darkest room. She loved pink princess dresses, bedtime stories, and a worn teddy bear she called Teddy.

Three weeks earlier, I'd been hired to clean Adrian Romano's enormous Manhattan mansion.

Everyone warned me about him.

Before the assassination attempt, Adrian had been ruthless, cold, and terrifyingly powerful. He was devastatingly handsome, with broad muscular shoulders, piercing gray eyes, and intricate black tattoos covering his powerful arms and chest.

But six months earlier, gunmen had ambushed his car.

He survived.

His ability to walk did not.

Since then, Adrian had shut himself inside his bedroom, refusing visitors and barely speaking to his family.

“Never let your daughter enter Mr. Romano's room,” the head housekeeper warned me.

I promised I wouldn't.

Then one afternoon, while I was cleaning downstairs, Lily disappeared.

I searched the hallways in panic.

“Lily? Sweetheart?”

Then I heard her tiny voice behind Adrian's bedroom door.

“Please don't be sad, Mister.”

My heart nearly stopped.

I pushed the door open.

And froze.

Adrian sat in his wheelchair beside the enormous windows, his muscular tattooed arms resting motionless on the armrests.

Tears were sliding silently down his cheeks.

My little girl stood beside him.

She wasn't frightened by his tattoos or the scars along his neck.

Instead, she gently wiped his cheek with the sleeve of her pink dress.

“Mommy says crying doesn't make you weak,” she whispered.

Adrian stared at her.

For the first time since I'd arrived, I heard him speak.

“What's your name, little princess?”

“Lily!”

She smiled brightly.

“And this is Teddy.”

She carefully placed her beloved stuffed bear beside his pillow.

“Mr. Adrian, Teddy can protect you when you're scared.”

Adrian's expression changed.

His eyes filled with fresh tears.

I stepped forward.

“Lily, sweetheart, come here. I'm so sorry, Mr. Romano.”

But Adrian didn't look at me.

He was staring at the teddy bear.

“My sister…” he whispered.

I stopped.

He swallowed painfully.

“She had one exactly like this.”

His younger sister had died in a mansion fire years earlier. According to the household staff, Adrian had never forgiven himself for failing to save her.

Lily gently patted his hand.

“Then Teddy can love both of you.”

She turned to leave.

Suddenly, Adrian gasped.

His fingers moved.

I watched in disbelief as his trembling hand reached toward Lily and caught the edge of her pink dress.

“Lily… wait.”

I covered my mouth.

For six months, nobody had seen him make a deliberate movement like that.

Adrian stared at his own hand, breathing unevenly.

Then I hurried forward to collect my daughter.

As I lifted Lily into my arms, my sleeve slipped down.

A small antique silver bracelet appeared around my wrist.

Adrian's face went deathly pale.

“Grace,” he whispered. “Where did you get that?”

“It belonged to my mother.”

His expression hardened.

He reached for the phone beside his wheelchair.

“LOCK EVERY GATE. NOW.”

I stepped backward, clutching Lily.

“Mr. Romano, what's happening?”

Adrian looked from my bracelet to Lily's teddy bear.

May you like

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“NOBODY LEAVES THIS HOUSE UNTIL I KNOW WHERE SHE GOT THAT BRACELET.”
