Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN THEY UNDERESTIMATED

Hayes Global had twenty-seven floors.

The archive occupied the basement.

Arthur and Michael had hidden beneath Declan’s own empire because they knew every security team would search outward.

Sarah knew something else.

The archive had no independent ventilation.

And only two exits.

Declan coordinated with federal agents through an attorney who had quietly spent years preparing contingencies for exactly this kind of collapse.

Thomas looked horrified.

“You kept an attorney for surrender?”

“Compliance.”

“You are a crime boss with a compliance strategy.”

“I own a shipping company.”

Sarah interrupted.

“Can you two have the identity crisis later?”

Declan looked at her.

She was standing over blueprints with one hand supporting her belly.

He loved her.

The realization arrived without drama.

Perhaps because it had actually arrived years ago.

He had simply been too disciplined to name it.

“I need you upstairs,” he said.

“No.”

“Sarah.”

“I know the building.”

“So do I.”

“You know where people shoot each other. I know where everything actually is.”

Thomas coughed to hide a laugh.

Declan glared at him.

Sarah pointed at the plans.

“The archive’s fire suppression can be triggered remotely from facilities.”

Declan understood.

“If we trigger the alarm—”

“Security doors unlock automatically.”

Thomas smiled.

“And Michael loses his controlled exit.”

They moved.

Federal agents surrounded the building discreetly.

Declan, Thomas, and two trusted guards entered through the loading dock.

Sarah remained in the mobile command vehicle.

This time willingly.

Mostly.

At 11:48 p.m., she triggered the suppression alarm.

Sirens erupted.

Basement locks disengaged.

Declan entered.

Gunfire followed.

Sarah listened through his earpiece.

Her hands shook.

“Declan?”

“I’m here.”

Another shot.

Then silence.

“Declan?”

Nothing.

Her heart slammed.

“Declan!”

Static.

Then Michael’s voice answered.

“Hello, Sarah.”

She froze.

“Where is he?”

“Alive.”

“Catherine?”

“Also alive.”

“What do you want?”

“You.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Of course.

Michael continued.

“You carry the future Declan never wanted until someone else threatened it.”

“You don’t care about the baby.”

“I care about legacy.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

Silence.

Sarah looked at the security map.

Michael’s signal was moving.

He had Declan’s radio.

Sublevel corridor B.

Toward the old records vault.

She typed rapidly.

“Your mother told us everything.”

Michael laughed.

“My mother tells whichever truth hurts least.”

“You’re Arthur Bishop’s son.”

Silence.

That struck him.

Sarah continued.

“You spent twelve years trying to inherit two families, and neither father trusted you.”

“Careful.”

“No.”

Sarah watched the signal.

Closer.

Almost there.

“You poisoned evidence. Kidnapped a doctor. Used Catherine. Threatened an unborn child. And after all of that, you still need Declan’s name.”

Michael’s breathing changed.

“You know nothing about me.”

“I know exactly what you are.”

“What?”

“A man who needs everyone else to tell him he matters.”

The signal stopped.

Sarah pressed ENTER.

A steel fire door slammed shut inside the basement.

Michael was trapped between two security barriers.

Seconds later, federal agents moved.

Sarah exhaled.

Then another voice came over the radio.

Arthur Bishop.

“Clever girl.”

Sarah’s blood chilled.

Arthur was not with Michael.

She turned.

The rear door of the command vehicle opened.

Arthur stood there.

Gun raised.

“Get out.”

Sarah obeyed.

He marched her toward the waterfront.

Rain had begun again.

“You ruined everything,” Arthur said.

“No. Your son did.”

“Michael is not my son.”

“DNA disagrees.”

Arthur’s face twisted.

There it was.

The truth beneath everything.

He had used Michael without ever accepting him.

A gunshot cracked.

Arthur jerked.

His weapon fell.

Thomas stood twenty feet away, pistol raised.

Sarah staggered backward.

Arthur lunged for the gun.

Another man hit him from the side.

Declan.

They crashed onto the wet pavement.

Declan struck Arthur once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

Federal agents surrounded them.

“Hands!”

Declan slowly raised his hands.

Arthur was arrested.

So was Michael.

And then, to Sarah’s shock, Declan turned toward the agents and offered his wrists.

“Declan?”

He looked at her.

“I told you I was done.”

The agent cuffed him.

Sarah ran forward.

“You’re leaving?”

“For a while.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

He leaned his forehead against hers.

“But our child deserves a father who doesn’t spend his life waiting for someone to kick down the door.”

Tears ran down Sarah’s face.

“I just got you.”

“You had me before either of us admitted it.”

An agent pulled him away.

Sarah stood in the rain watching the man she loved surrender the empire he had spent his life protecting.

Then pain tore through her abdomen.

She doubled over.

“Sarah?”

Declan twisted against the agents.

Another pain came.

Then warmth ran down Sarah’s legs.

Thomas caught her before she hit the pavement.

Declan’s face went white.

Sarah was only seventeen weeks pregnant.

May you like

Far too early.

And something was terribly wrong.
