Chapter 6 - THE SON WHO NEVER WAS

Eleanor Hayes confessed before midnight.

Declan sat across from his mother in the Beacon Hill library where he had learned to read, learned to lie, and learned at sixteen that men bearing the Hayes name were expected to survive whatever they felt.

Sarah sat beside him.

Eleanor stared at their joined hands.

“Michael was not your father’s biological son.”

Declan’s expression remained unreadable.

“Did Michael know?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Since he was twenty.”

Thomas stood by the door.

Catherine remained with Dr. Weaver at the secure clinic.

Eleanor twisted her wedding ring.

“Patrick loved Michael. Blood never mattered to him.”

“It mattered to Michael.”

“Yes.”

That was the beginning.

Michael discovered his biological father was Arthur Bishop.

Arthur had been involved with Eleanor before her marriage.

Years later, Michael learned the truth and became obsessed with what he believed had been stolen from him.

Two families.

Two empires.

Yet no uncontested place in either.

Arthur exploited that resentment.

Patrick discovered their secret dealings.

Michael staged his death before Patrick could expose him.

Declan leaned back.

“So this entire alliance—”

“Was never about your marriage.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“It was about merging what Michael believes belongs to him.”

Sarah understood.

“And Catherine?”

Eleanor looked ashamed.

“A tool.”

Just like Sarah.

Just like her baby.

Declan stood and walked toward the fireplace.

“You knew Arthur poisoned Sarah?”

“No.”

“Did you know Michael was watching her?”

“Yes.”

Declan turned.

“And you said nothing.”

“He promised nobody would hurt her.”

“You trusted a man who faked his own death?”

“He is my son!”

“So am I!”

The shout shook the room.

Sarah had never heard Declan raise his voice.

Eleanor began crying.

Declan looked away.

When he spoke again, his voice was quiet.

“You chose him every time.”

Eleanor had no answer.

Sarah followed Declan into the hall.

He kept walking until she caught his hand.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“You don’t have to pretend with me.”

He laughed once without humor.

“I’m not pretending.”

“You are.”

Declan turned.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he said the thing that had been buried beneath every other betrayal.

“I was going to marry Catherine.”

Sarah’s hand slipped from his.

“What?”

“Not because I wanted her.”

“That doesn’t improve it.”

“I know.”

He forced himself to continue.

“I thought if the Bishop alliance protected my people, I could live with it.”

“And Miami?”

“I convinced myself Miami was one night.”

Sarah’s eyes shone.

“And me?”

“I could never convince myself you were nothing.”

That hurt worse.

“Then why didn’t you choose me?”

“Because men like me are taught duty is choosing everyone except ourselves.”

Sarah stepped backward.

“And women like me are expected to wait until you finish?”

“No.”

His answer surprised her.

“No, Sarah. You should never have waited.”

She looked at him.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me because we made a child. I’m not asking you to love me because someone tried to kill you.”

“Then what are you asking?”

“A chance to become someone you could choose freely.”

Sarah’s anger weakened.

Not disappeared.

But weakened.

Declan reached into his pocket.

He placed something in her palm.

A key.

“What is this?”

“My house in Maine.”

“I don’t want a house.”

“It isn’t a gift. It’s an exit.”

She stared at him.

“No guards unless you request them. No Hayes employees. Money in an account under your control for medical expenses and the baby. If you want to leave Boston tomorrow, you can.”

Sarah closed her fingers around the key.

“You would let me leave?”

His face tightened.

“No.”

She stared.

“But I would not stop you.”

That distinction mattered.

Before she could answer, Thomas entered.

“We found Michael.”

A live video feed appeared on the television.

Michael sat in a private dining room.

Arthur Bishop beside him.

Between them was Catherine.

Bound to a chair.

Sarah’s stomach dropped.

“She was at the clinic.”

Thomas nodded.

“Someone inside betrayed us.”

Michael looked into the camera.

“Hello, little brother.”

Declan went still.

Michael smiled.

“Bring Sarah to Pier Nine before midnight.”

Sarah’s face drained.

Arthur placed a gun against Catherine’s head.

Michael continued.

“Or Catherine pays for your refusal.”

Declan reached for his coat.

Sarah stopped him.

“You’re not bringing me.”

“No.”

“Then Catherine dies.”

“No.”

“What’s your plan?”

Declan looked at Thomas.

Then at the Bishop financial ledgers.

“We stop playing like criminals.”

Thomas frowned.

Declan picked up his phone.

“Call the FBI.”

Everyone stared at him.

Thomas actually laughed.

“You’re serious?”

“I’m done inheriting my father’s wars.”

Declan looked at Sarah.

“And I’m done letting Michael decide what the Hayes name means.”

But Sarah was staring at the video.

At Catherine.

At the wall behind her.

Something bothered her.

She stepped closer.

Then she saw it.

A brass plaque reflected in a mirror.

Three words.

HAYES GLOBAL ARCHIVE.

Sarah turned.

“They’re not at Pier Nine.”

Declan looked at her.

May you like

She pointed.

“They’re inside your building.”
