Chapter 6 - The Night of the Black Cars

The house outside Manhattan stood on a wooded property surrounded by security cameras and a tall iron fence.
For two days, nothing happened.
Matteo played with his wooden train. Hannah read him stories. Lucas took calls from lawyers and investigators, working to separate his legitimate businesses from the criminal dealings Victor had hidden inside them.
On the third night, the power went out.
Hannah was in the kitchen when the emergency lights flickered on.
She heard the security alarm.
Then a man's voice shouted from outside.
“Everyone away from the windows!”
Lucas appeared in the hallway.
“Take Matteo to the panic room.”
Hannah grabbed the boy's hand.
“What about you?”
“Go.”
She hurried upstairs with Matteo as Lucas moved toward the security station.
The boy was trembling.
“Is Mommy coming back?”
Hannah stopped.
“What?”
“When bad things happen, Dad gets the face he had when Mommy died.”
Her heart ached.
She knelt in front of him.
“Your dad is scared right now. That doesn't mean he won't come back.”
“Promise?”
“I promise we'll do everything we can to stay safe.”
She led him into the reinforced room behind the upstairs study. A security officer was already there, checking the communications system.
Then came a loud crash from downstairs.
Matteo clapped his hands over his ears.
Hannah wrapped him in her arms.
“Listen to me,” she whispered. “We're going to count five things we can see.”
He shook his head.
“Five things.”
He swallowed.
“The chair.”
“Good.”
“The lamp.”
“Yes.”
“Your shoes.”
Hannah looked down at her glued black flats.
“Excellent shoes. Very expensive.”
A tiny laugh escaped him.
They continued until his breathing slowed.
Outside, the sounds of the disturbance moved toward the far side of the property. The security team had triggered the backup system, and emergency lights illuminated the grounds.
Within minutes, police officers arrived.
The attackers fled before they could reach the house.
Lucas returned to the panic room with a cut above his eyebrow and fury in his eyes.
Matteo ran to him.
“Dad!”
Lucas dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around his son.
“I've got you.”
Matteo clung to him.
“Don't leave me.”
“Never by choice,” Lucas whispered.
Hannah stood a few steps away, suddenly aware of how close they had come to losing everything.
Lucas looked up at her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he rose and crossed the room.
He took her hands.
“Thank you.”
“You don't need to thank me.”
“I do. You kept him calm when I couldn't get to him.”
“He needed someone to stay with him.”
Lucas looked down at their joined hands.
“And you stayed.”
The words carried more weight than he seemed prepared to admit.
Hannah gently released one hand.
“Your son is worth staying for.”
Lucas nodded.
“I know.”
But his gaze lingered on her face.
And Hannah began to realize that the bond forming between them was no longer simply about the child they both loved.
It was becoming something neither had planned.
Something dangerous in its own way.

Because Lucas Ravalini had built his life around never needing anyone.
And Hannah Cooper had learned that caring for a broken family could slowly break your own heart.
