Chapter 5 - The Letter in the Safe

The safe deposit box was opened under the supervision of Lucas's lawyer and a private investigator.

Inside were three items.

A folded letter.

A small silver key.

And a flash drive sealed inside a plastic envelope.

Lucas took the letter with shaking hands.

The handwriting was unmistakably Isabella's.

He read it once.

Then again.

Finally, he sat down.

Hannah waited.

She did not ask what it said.

After several minutes, Lucas passed the letter to her.

Lucas,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that I feared but hoped I could prevent. I need you to know that I never wanted to leave you or Matteo. I wanted to protect our son from the things we have allowed to grow around us.

Your uncle has been using your name to move money through companies you believe are legitimate. I have copies of the records. I tried to tell you, but someone inside your office warned him before I could show you everything.

I don't know whom to trust anymore.

If I cannot return, please don't let Matteo grow up believing that fear is the same as love. Don't teach him that silence is loyalty. And don't let him think that being a Ravalini means he must become a man who frightens everyone around him.

He deserves a better future than the one waiting for us.

I love you. I always will.

Lucas pressed the letter to his face.

Hannah looked away to give him privacy.

When he finally spoke, his voice was rough.

“She knew.”

“She knew something was wrong,” Hannah replied. “That doesn't mean she knew what would happen.”

Lucas stared at the flash drive.

“Victor has spent years telling me that the family must protect its own.”

“Protecting people and protecting wrongdoing are not the same thing.”

He looked at her.

“You always know what to say?”

“No. Usually I say the wrong thing and hope people are too polite to mention it.”

A small, unexpected laugh escaped him.

Then he grew serious again.

The flash drive contained financial records, photographs, and a series of audio files. One recording captured Victor discussing Isabella's discovery with a senior employee.

Another contained a chilling statement.

“If she talks, the problem disappears. The boy stays where he belongs, and Lucas will learn to stop asking questions.”

Lucas stopped the recording.

His hands were shaking.

“He threatened my son.”

“He may have been referring to custody,” the investigator said. “We need the complete context before drawing conclusions.”

Lucas nodded stiffly.

He wanted to believe that Victor had only threatened to separate him from Matteo.

But he knew his uncle.

Victor did not make threats casually.

The investigator recommended that the evidence be transferred to federal authorities and that Matteo be moved to a secure location while the case was assessed.

Lucas agreed.

That evening, he told Matteo they would spend a few days at a quiet house outside the city.

“Is Mr. Thursday coming?” Matteo asked.

“No,” Lucas said. “And if he does, Hannah knows how to defeat him.”

Matteo looked at Hannah.

“Can you come too?”

Hannah smiled.

“Of course.”

Lucas watched his son relax.

He had spent years believing security came from gates, guards, and the fear his name inspired.

Now he was beginning to understand that the most important thing in Matteo's world was much simpler.

Knowing who would still be there when the lights went out.
