Chapter 6 - The Emergency Boardroom

Monday morning arrived under a blanket of heavy gray fog that rolled off the East River, wrapping the Manhattan skyscrapers in a ghostly shroud. By 8:30 AM, the seventy-fifth floor of the Ellison Tower was buzzing with anxious energy. News of the dramatic arrest at my penthouse had already made the morning tabloids, though the details remained wildly inaccurate—ranging from rumors of a domestic dispute to claims of a high-society jewel heist.

Inside the grand boardroom, thirty board members sat around the massive oval glass table. At the head of the table sat Richard Hayes. He looked remarkably composed for a man who had spent the weekend plotting my total ruin. He wore a sharp charcoal suit, his silver hair brushed back to perfection, a expression of grave, performative sympathy fixed on his face.

I sat at the opposite end of the table, dressed in a plain black suit, my hands folded calmly over a blank leather portfolio.

"Members of the board," Richard began, clearing his throat and standing up. He placed his hands on the table, leaning forward with an air of elder statesman authority. "We are facing an unprecedented crisis. As you are all aware, an extremely unfortunate event occurred at Mr. Ellison's residence on Saturday night. His fiancée, Ms. Diana Caldwell, was taken into custody by federal authorities under allegations of corporate espionage."

A murmur of distress passed through the board members.

"Now," Richard continued, casting a lingering, almost pitying glance in my direction. "While we all share deep personal sympathy for Marcus during this deeply traumatic personal time, as Chief Financial Officer, my primary duty is to protect this corporation and its shareholders. The market opens in thirty minutes. When the bell rings, Ellison Enterprises stock is going to face immense downward pressure due to the uncertainty surrounding our executive leadership."

"What are you proposing, Richard?" asked Eleanor Vance, a senior board member and cousin to Arthur.

"I am proposing an immediate, emergency transfer of executive authority," Richard said smoothly, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from his briefcase. "Marcus is clearly compromised emotionally and legally. Under Section 4B of our corporate charter, the board has the power to vote for a temporary suspension of the CEO's administrative privileges and appoint an interim Executive Chairman to stabilize our market position."

"And who do you suggest fill that role?" I asked from the far end of the table, my voice breaking the heavy atmosphere like a quiet bell.

Richard turned to me, offering a sad, practiced shake of his head. "Marcus, please understand... this isn't personal. It's business. I am offering to step into the role of Executive Chairman until this mess is thoroughly investigated and cleared up."

"And what about the defense contract?" Arthur Vance asked, leaning back in his chair with a neutral expression, carefully keeping his hands clear of his own documents. "The Sterling acquisition is set to be finalized at four o'clock this afternoon. If we suspend the CEO now, who signs the closing papers?"

"I will," Richard said without missing a beat. "As Executive Chairman, I will review the financial schedules, execute the contract, and ensure that Ellison Enterprises maintains its competitive edge."

"Is that so?" I said softly.

I stood up slowly, pushing my chair back. The entire boardroom went dead silent as I walked down the length of the glass table, stopping directly opposite Richard.

"Richard," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "Before we take a vote on your generous offer to save the company, I think the board deserves to see the updated quarterly treasury audit."

Richard’s eyes flickered with a brief, almost imperceptible flash of arrogance. "Marcus, the quarterly audit was completed last Tuesday. It was fully verified by our external auditors."

"Not this audit," I said.

I turned to the main wall display and pressed a button on a small remote control in my hand. The massive LED screen behind Richard flickered to life, displaying a high-resolution, live stream of a bank ledger from the Bank of Panama.

At the top of the ledger was the name Aegis Holdings LLC.

And listed beneath it was a line-item transaction completed three days ago: +$40,000,000.00—transferred directly from Ellison Enterprises' core operational account.

Richard’s face went instantly from pale to a ghastly, mottled yellow. The pen in his hand slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the glass table.

"What... what is the meaning of this?" Richard stammered, his voice suddenly lacking its smooth cadence. "This is unauthorized... this is a fake display!"

May you like

"It isn't a fake, Richard," I said, stepping closer to him. "That is the paper trail of the forty million dollars you stole from this company on Thursday afternoon. The same forty million dollars you used to fund a massive short position against Ellison Enterprises through Julian Vance’s offshore accounts."

The boardroom exploded into absolute chaos.
