Chapter 5 - The Snake at the Table

The air in Room 304 felt suddenly paper-thin. I stared at the photograph resting under the bright halogen desk lamp. There was no mistaking the slicked-back silver hair, the gold-rimmed wire spectacles, and the smug, patronizing smirk of Richard Hayes.

Richard had been hired by my father twenty years ago. He was the man who managed Ellison Enterprises' multi-billion-dollar treasury, the man I trusted implicitly to oversee every audit, every tax filing, and every corporate acquisition. He was the man who had sat at my engagement table just nine hours ago, raising a glass of Dom Pérignon to toast my future happiness.

"He was feeding them the internal codes," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Frank knelt beside a heavy steel shredder sitting near the desk. He reached into the collection bin beneath it and pulled out several strips of paper that hadn't been fully destroyed. "Look at this, Marcus."

I took the strips and laid them flat on the glass desk, piecing them together like a violent puzzle.

It was a wire transfer authorization form.

Dated three days ago, it authorized the transfer of forty million dollars from Ellison Enterprises' primary offshore reserve account directly into a bank account in Panama. The signature at the bottom was mine—an absolute, flawless forgery.

"They weren't just trying to sabotage the defense acquisition," Frank said, his eyes darkening. "They were actively draining your core liquidity. Once the news of the wiretap leaked and your stock dropped, they were going to trigger an automatic loan default clause with your primary creditors. You would have been forced into personal bankruptcy before you even realized what happened."

"And Diana was the key," I realized, the full scope of the plot unfolding before me. "She was installed to keep me occupied, to monitor my movements, and to plant the final piece of evidence that would make it look like I was the one committing corporate fraud to cover my own losses."

"What's the play, boss?" Frank asked, looking at me intently. "We take this to the FBI right now. We have enough here to lock up Hayes, Julian Vance, and Diana for the rest of their natural lives."

I stared down at the photograph of Richard Hayes raising his glass to me. Anger, sharp and icy, settled deep within my bones.

"No," I said slowly, turning toward the door. "If we call the FBI now, their lawyers will tie this up in federal motions for the next three years. They'll hide behind offshore shell companies, claim chain-of-custody violations on this hotel room, and walk away with millions while my company's reputation is dragged through the mud."

"So what do you want to do?"

"I want to let them think the plan is still working," I said, a cold, calculated smile touching my lips. "Richard doesn't know we found this room. He thinks Diana was caught isolated, acting as a rogue operative. He believes his cover is entirely intact."

I picked up the key to Room 304, locked the heavy oak door behind us, and walked down the quiet corridor.

"Call Arthur Vance," I instructed Frank as we stepped into the service elevator. "Tell him to prepare an emergency board meeting for nine o'clock tomorrow morning. Tell him to announce that due to the 'unfortunate incident' at my penthouse, I am stepping down temporarily as CEO and handing full financial control over to Richard Hayes."

Frank looked at me, a low grin forming on his face. "You're setting the trap."

"No," I replied, staring at my reflection in the polished steel elevator doors. "I'm handing him the rope. And I'm going to watch him hang himself with it in front of the entire world."
