Chapter 3 - The Unmasking

I swung the double doors wide.
Julian stood in the center of the steam-soaked marble floor, soaking wet, wrapped in a white terrycloth robe. His hair was plastered to his forehead, his face crimson with rage and humiliation.
Behind him, curled in the corner near the vanity, Mia sat shivering on the bath mat, wrapped in Julian’s monogrammed towel, her mascara streaked across her cheeks.
Silence dropped like a guillotine.
Natalie gasped, slapping a hand over her mouth. “Oh my God.”
Julian froze, staring past me at his mother and sister. The arrogance drained from his posture in an instant. “Mom… Natalie… wait. This isn't—”
“Save it, Julian,” I whispered.
I turned to watch Beatrice, expecting the outrage of an aristocratic matriarch whose son had disgraced their name in front of her.
Instead, Beatrice didn’t look at Julian.
She looked directly at Mia.
“You idiot,” Beatrice hissed.
The words weren’t aimed at her cheating son. They were aimed at the crying twenty-year-old girl on the floor.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Caldwell!” Mia sobbed, burying her face in her hands. “I tried to leave! He wouldn't let me go!”
“Beatrice?” I asked, the room suddenly tilting beneath my feet. “You know her?”
Julian stepped forward, raising his hands in defense. “Harper, calm down. Let’s not do this in front of them. Let’s talk like adults.”
“Shut up,” I said coldly, never taking my eyes off Beatrice. “Beatrice, why are you talking to our housekeeper like she answers to you?”
Beatrice straightened her posture, recovering her icy composure in seconds. She looked at me with cold disdain.
“Because she does, Harper,” Beatrice said softly. “Mia has been on my payroll since January.”
My breath caught. “What?”
“Did you really believe Julian found a girl this compliant through an agency?” Beatrice took a step closer, her voice devoid of remorse. “We needed eyes inside this house. We needed to know when you signed the corporate transfer documents for the Caldwell estate.”
Julian looked at his mother in panic. “Mom, don’t!”
“She already caught you, Julian,” Beatrice snapped. “The charade is over.”
My mind raced. The corporate transfers. My late father’s company, Caldwell Logistics, which had merged with the Vance family holdings when Julian and I married.
“You didn’t just cheat on me,” I whispered, looking at Julian. “This wasn't an impulse.”
Julian’s face hardened, the remorse vanishing into thin air. “You were never going to sign over the controlling shares, Harper. You were hoarding your father’s legacy while my family’s firm starved. Mia was supposed to find the ledger codes in your private study.”
He looked at Mia with disgust. “She wasn't supposed to get caught in the damn tub.”
Mia looked up, tears streaming down her chin. “Julian, you told me she was in Chicago until Friday! You promised me my family’s debt was cleared!”

Every wall I had built around my life shattered. It wasn't an affair. It was an orchestrated corporate coup—and my entire marriage had been the battlefield.
