Chapter 1

The first thing I heard on my tenth wedding anniversary was my husband laughing inside the heart-shaped jacuzzi I had designed as a symbol of our marriage, with another woman whispering his name beside him. Before the night was over, I would invite Julian’s entire family into the house for an anniversary surprise he never saw coming. And I still had no idea the betrayal went beyond the two people behind that bathroom door.
My name is Harper Caldwell, and the day Julian underestimated me was the day he destroyed himself.
I stood barefoot outside our master bathroom with his anniversary gift still in my hand.
A watch.
Ten years of marriage sealed inside a velvet box.
Behind the door, water moved.
Soft jazz played through the speakers.
Then Mia whispered, “Julian.”
I knew that voice.
She was the twenty-year-old housekeeper I had welcomed into my home, paid generously, clothed, helped, and treated almost like a younger sister.
That morning, she had asked to leave early because her mother was ill.
I had given her two hundred extra dollars to send home.
Now her sweater was lying beside Julian’s jacket on my bedroom floor.
Two empty champagne glasses sat downstairs.
My champagne.
The bottle I had saved from our wedding year.
I did not call out.
I took out my phone.
Turned on the camera.
And opened the bathroom door.
Steam rolled toward me.
Julian sat in the jacuzzi with one arm around Mia’s bare shoulders.
The anniversary candles I had bought were burning around them.
For half a second, neither of them moved.
Then Mia screamed.
Julian stood so fast that water spilled across the marble.
“Harper.”
I looked at him through my phone screen.
“Happy anniversary,” I said.
“Put the phone down.”
Mia was crying now.
Julian grabbed a robe.
“It isn’t what you think.”
I stared at him.
“Then tell me what I’m looking at.”
For one second, I saw fear.
Then it became irritation.
That change saved me.
If he had begged immediately, I might have broken.
Instead, he looked angry that I had interrupted him.
“Stop filming,” he said. “You’re behaving irrationally.”
I stepped backward.
He moved toward the door.
So I pulled it shut.
The bathroom had a custom exterior lock for the steam system and automated controls.
The brass key was still in the bedroom cabinet.
I turned it.
Click.
Julian hit the other side of the door.
“Harper!”
I slipped the key into my pocket.
In my other hand, I was still holding the watch I had bought for the man I thought I knew.
For ten years, I had tried to give Julian everything.
That night, I decided to give him the one thing he had never expected.
An audience.
I went downstairs and called his mother.
“Beatrice,” I said, forcing my voice to stay calm. “I’m arranging an anniversary surprise for Julian. I need you, Natalie, and the rest of the family here at eight thirty.”
She paused.
Just briefly.
But I heard it.
“Tonight?”
“Yes.”
“Is Julian home?”
Above me, his fists pounded against the bathroom door.
“He is.”
Another pause.
Then Beatrice asked one more question.
“Does he know about the surprise?”
I looked toward the ceiling.
“No,” I said. “But he will.”
And when I lowered the phone, that brief pause stayed with me.
I had caught my husband with Mia.
May you like
But I was about to discover that they were not the only people keeping secrets from me.
