Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LOVEDominic had spent his entire life believing love was weakness.

Then Emma taught him otherwise.
Their relationship wasn't easy.
She didn't suddenly become a glamorous woman wearing diamonds.
She didn't need to.
She remained Emma.
The woman who drank cheap coffee.
Who worried about Noah.
Who still called her mother every evening.
Who sometimes forgot how powerful Dominic actually was.
One morning, she walked into his office carrying a paper bag.
"You forgot breakfast."
Dominic looked up.
"I don't eat breakfast."
"You do now."
She put the bag on his desk.
He stared at it.
"What is this?"
"Egg sandwich."
He opened it.
"You're ordering the CEO around?"
"Yes."
He smiled.
"I like it."
She laughed.
Their relationship slowly became public.
The newspapers had a field day.
CASTELLANO HEIR FINDS LOVE AFTER FAMILY EMPIRE COLLAPSE
WHO IS EMMA CARTER?
FORMER HOUSEKEEPER NOW LEADS BILLION-DOLLAR FOUNDATION
Emma hated every headline.
Dominic found them amusing.
"Why are you smiling?"
"They're calling you mysterious."
"They're calling me a housekeeper."
"You were."
"Not anymore."
"No."
He leaned closer.
"You're the woman who owns half my attention."
"Half?"
"The other half belongs to work."
She laughed.
"Good answer."
Then one evening, Dominic proposed.
No cameras.
No mansion ballroom.
No diamonds.
Just the two of them in the garden.
He held out a small ring.
"My mother gave this to me."
Emma stared.
"I thought your family didn't have many things left."
"This is different."
"Why?"
"Because it survived."
She touched it.
"Dominic..."
"I know my life is complicated."
"That's an understatement."
"I know I can't promise you a perfect life."
"I don't need perfect."
"I can promise you something else."
"What?"
"I will never ask you to become smaller so I can feel bigger."
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"Yes."
He smiled.
"Yes?"
"Yes."
He slipped the ring onto her finger.
Then she hugged him.
For a man who had spent years avoiding attachment, Dominic held her like he had finally found home.
The wedding was small.
Lucia cried.
Marco pretended not to.
Noah gave a speech that made everyone laugh.
Emma's father walked her down the aisle.
Her mother sat in the front row.
And Dominic waited.
When Emma reached him, he whispered:
"You came."
She smiled.
"I always do."
They exchanged vows.
No promises about wealth.
No promises about power.
Only promises about honesty.
Protection.
Freedom.
Family.
When they kissed, the entire room applauded.
But Emma noticed something else.
Dominic was crying.
She touched his cheek.
"You okay?"
He laughed softly.
"Very."
"You're crying."
"I know."
"Why?"
He looked toward the photograph of his father displayed at the entrance.
"Because I think he finally got what he wanted."
"What?"
"A family that wasn't built on fear."
Six months later, Emma discovered she was pregnant.
Dominic stared at the test.
Then at her.
Then back at the test.
"We're having a baby?"
Emma laughed.
"Yes."
He looked terrified.
"Dominic?"
"I'm going to be a father."
"Apparently."
"I have no idea what I'm doing."
"Neither do I."
He pulled her into his arms.
"I'll learn."
Emma smiled against his chest.
"You'd better."
That night, Dominic stood in the nursery.
A tiny crib sat beneath the window.
He touched the wooden rail.
For the first time in his life, he imagined a future that wasn't about survival.
No enemies.
No guns.
No blood.
Just laughter.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
Marco's voice came through.
"Boss."
Dominic's smile disappeared.
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
A pause.
"Then why are you calling?"
"We found something in Isabella's old files."
"What?"
"Something about Emma's family."
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Marco hesitated.
"Her father wasn't the only Carter connected to the Castellanos."
Dominic looked toward the nursery.
"What do you mean?"
"There was another Carter."
"Who?"
Marco's voice dropped.
"Emma's grandfather."
Dominic's face changed.
"What's his connection?"
"We don't know."
"Find out."
He hung up.
Emma appeared in the doorway.
"What's wrong?"
Dominic looked at her.
Then smiled.
"Nothing."
But for the first time since their wedding...
May you like
he lied.
Because he knew their story wasn't finished.
