Chapter 8 - THE LEDGERThe ledger had been hidden in plain sight.

Inside the old locket Emma wore around her neck.
Her mother had given it to her when she was sixteen.
Emma had never opened it.
Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.
A code.
Nothing more.
But the code unlocked a digital archive.
The archive contained everything.
Money transfers.
Names.
Accounts.
Politicians.
Judges.
Lawyers.
Companies.
And evidence connecting Isabella to the murder of Dominic's father.
But there was something nobody expected.
Evidence clearing Matteo.
Evidence exposing Viktor Kolov's enemies.
And evidence proving Dominic's father had been planning to dismantle the criminal side of the Castellano empire before he died.
Dominic stared at the files.
"He was trying to change everything."
Emma nodded.
"Yes."
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
"Because everyone was afraid."
He looked at her.
"Are you afraid?"
Emma thought about the alley.
The hospital.
Her mother.
Her father.
The gunfire.
She shook her head.
"Not anymore."
Dominic smiled faintly.
"Good."
The investigation became national news.
The Castellano organization began collapsing.
Dominic made a decision nobody expected.
He turned over the criminal operations.
Not because he had been defeated.
Because he finally understood what his father had wanted.
A legitimate empire.
No fear.
No blood.
No secrets.
He rebuilt Castellano Holdings as a legal security and logistics company.
Marco became head of corporate security.
Lucia took over the charitable foundation.
Matteo became a witness.
Kolov disappeared from New York.
But Isabella survived.
She was sentenced after the evidence was presented.
Before she was taken away, she asked to see Dominic.
He agreed.
She looked smaller behind the glass.
"You won."
"No."
She frowned.
"You destroyed everything."
"No."
Dominic leaned forward.
"I destroyed the part that was killing us."
She stared at him.
"Your father would be proud."
"I hope so."
Isabella looked toward the door.
"And the girl?"
"Emma?"
"Yes."
Dominic's expression softened.
"She's safe."
Isabella smiled sadly.
"Then maybe I lost for the right reason."
Months passed.
Emma returned to work.
But not as a housekeeper.
Dominic offered her a position in the new foundation.
She refused at first.
"I don't have the qualifications."
"You understand people."
"That's not a degree."
"It's more useful than one."
She eventually accepted.
Her mother entered treatment for her illness.
Her father moved back to New York.
Noah received new prosthetic legs through Dominic's foundation.
And Emma?
She began smiling again.
One evening, Dominic found her alone in the garden.
"You've been avoiding me."
She looked at him.
"No."
"Yes."
"Maybe."
"Why?"
Emma looked down.
"Because things changed."
"They did."
"You don't need a housekeeper anymore."
"No."
"And I don't work for you."
"No."
"So what am I?"
Dominic stepped closer.
Emma's heartbeat accelerated.
"That's what I'm trying to figure out."
He stopped only inches away.
She could feel his warmth.
"You scared me," he whispered.
"When?"
"Every time you walked into danger."
Emma smiled.
"You scare me too."
"Why?"
"Because you make me feel safe."
He looked at her.
Neither moved.
Then Dominic whispered:
"Emma."
May you like
She looked up.
And for the first time, the most feared man in New York looked completely vulnerable.
