Chapter 8 - The Man Behind the EmpireRichard demanded the ledger by noon.

Vincent agreed to meet him at an old private club near the Delaware River.

But before leaving, he finally gave Hannah the complete story.

Arthur Calder had inherited a legitimate shipping company from his father.

Over time, he had turned parts of it into a criminal operation involving weapons, stolen cargo, bribery, and money laundering.

Richard had helped him.

But the man who originally arranged the network was someone else.

A respected businessman named Thomas Whitaker.

Hannah stared at her father.

Walter looked as though the years had finally caught up with him.

"Thomas was my uncle," he said. "Your great-uncle."

Hannah shook her head.

"I never knew him."

"He disappeared before you were born."

Vincent opened the ledger.

"Thomas built the first routes. Arthur expanded them. Daniel discovered the records and realized the same names were appearing in current shipments."

"And you knew?"

"I suspected."

"That's not good enough."

"I know."

Walter explained that Thomas had once offered Daniel money to keep quiet. Daniel refused. He began secretly gathering evidence, believing he could expose the entire network.

Then the warehouse burned.

Hannah looked at the photographs again.

"Why did Sabrina's daughter matter?"

"Because Daniel had copied some of the records onto a small device and hidden it with his daughter's medical documents," Vincent replied. "The girl may have been carrying information without knowing it."

Hannah stared at him.

"She's a child."

"I know."

"And Richard has her?"

"That's what we believe."

Vincent placed a second photograph on the table.

It showed a woman entering a private clinic with a little girl.

Hannah recognized the woman.

Sabrina.

"She found her?"

"Not yet."

"Then we find her first."

Vincent looked at his wife.

"There's something else."

He removed a small velvet box from his pocket.

Hannah stiffened.

"I'm not taking that."

"It's not your ring."

He opened it.

Inside was a tiny silver bracelet.

The same design as the one in the photograph.

"Daniel left this with my father before he died. Arthur gave it to me after the funeral."

Hannah stared at the bracelet.

"Why would he do that?"

"Because he wanted me to keep it hidden."

Vincent turned the bracelet over.

An inscription had been carved inside.

For the daughter who deserves to know.

Hannah's eyes filled.

Daniel had known he might die.

He had prepared something for his child.

And the Calder family had kept it hidden.

She stepped away.

"I can't do this with you."

Vincent closed the box.

"I understand."

"No. You don't. You think because you're telling me the truth now, I can somehow put nine years of lies behind me."

"I don't expect that."

"Then what do you expect?"

He looked at her.

"Nothing."

His voice was quiet.

"I just want to help you find your niece."

For a long moment, Hannah said nothing.

Then she nodded.

"That's all you're getting from me."

At the club, Richard arrived with two armed men.

Vincent placed the ledger on the table.

Richard smiled.

"Your father would be proud."

"My father was a criminal."

Richard's smile disappeared.

"You sound just like Hannah."

Vincent looked toward the entrance.

Michael was already in position.

Richard reached for the ledger.

Then the lights went out.

A gunshot echoed through the room.

When the emergency lights came on, Richard was gone.

May you like

So was the ledger.

And Vincent was on the floor with blood spreading across his shirt.
