Chapter 4 - The Husband at the OrchardThe first man through the door never reached the kitchen.

Michael Rourke appeared behind him, grabbed his jacket, and drove him against the hallway wall.

A second man reached inside his coat.

Walter raised the rifle.

"Don't."

The man stopped.

Within seconds, Michael's security team had both intruders on the floor.

Hannah stood beside the kitchen table, clutching her phone.

Michael looked at her.

"Are you hurt?"

"No. Who sent them?"

"We're finding out."

Walter lowered the rifle.

"Get them off my property."

Michael nodded to his men.

Then he looked toward the driveway.

A familiar black SUV had just pulled in.

Vincent stepped out.

He wore no tie, and his charcoal jacket was open. His expression was harder than Hannah remembered.

He looked first at the broken door.

Then at Walter.

Finally, his eyes found his wife.

"Hannah."

She didn't move.

"You shouldn't be here."

"I know."

"Then why are you?"

"Because someone tried to get into your parents' house."

"Your people seem to bring trouble wherever they go."

Vincent absorbed the accusation.

"You're right."

Hannah had expected an argument.

His agreement unsettled her more.

He approached slowly, stopping several feet away.

"Are you safe?"

"Don't ask me that like you're still my husband."

His jaw tightened.

"I am still your husband."

"Only on paper."

Walter stepped between them.

"Whatever you have to say, say it outside."

Vincent looked at the older man.

"Mr. Whitaker, I need to speak with you about Daniel."

Walter's expression turned cold.

"You had eleven years."

"I know."

"Then you had nine years with my daughter. Did you ever tell her?"

Vincent looked at Hannah.

"No."

The answer was immediate.

Walter almost lunged at him.

Michael moved between them.

Hannah raised one hand.

"Enough."

She looked at Vincent.

"What did you know?"

Vincent reached into his jacket and produced a folded document.

"Daniel discovered that my father was using shipping containers to move weapons through legitimate cargo routes. He found altered manifests and payment records."

"And the warehouse?"

"Your brother threatened to give everything to federal investigators."

"Then what happened?"

Vincent's face changed.

"My father ordered him stopped."

The room went silent.

Hannah felt her knees weaken.

"Stopped?"

Vincent swallowed.

"I believe he ordered someone to scare him. The fire wasn't supposed to happen."

"You believe?"

"I wasn't there."

"But you knew enough to investigate."

"Yes."

"For eleven years?"

He didn't answer.

Hannah's voice cracked.

"You let me bury my brother believing he had made a mistake with an electrical system."

"I was twenty-nine. My father controlled everything. I had no proof."

"You had me."

Vincent lowered his eyes.

That was the worst part.

He had possessed her trust and had chosen to protect his family empire instead.

Hannah stepped back.

"Why didn't you tell me after your father died?"

"Because the evidence disappeared."

"Why didn't you tell me when we married?"

He looked at her for a long moment.

"Because I was afraid you'd leave."

Hannah laughed bitterly.

"So you decided to build a marriage on a lie."

"I thought I could fix it."

"And Sabrina?"

Vincent's silence returned.

"Did you sleep with her?"

He closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The word was quiet.

But it destroyed whatever remained between them.

Hannah turned away.

Vincent stepped forward.

"She approached me with information about Daniel. I made a terrible decision. I let her get close. Then I kept making excuses."

"Stop."

"I am not asking you to forgive me."

"Good."

"I'm asking you to stay alive long enough to hear the truth."

Hannah turned.

"Then tell me the truth."

Vincent placed the document on the table.

It contained a list of shipping payments, dates, and company names.

At the bottom was a signature.

Walter Whitaker.

Hannah looked at her father.

He had gone completely pale.

"Dad?"

Walter slowly sat down.

Vincent's voice was almost a whisper.

"Your father wasn't just a witness to Daniel's investigation."

He pointed to the signature.

"He was the person who helped Daniel uncover the operation."

Walter stared at the paper.

Then he said something Hannah never expected.

"I helped your brother hide the original evidence."

May you like

He looked at his daughter.

"And I know who killed him."
