Chapter 9 - The Name Written in Blood

The recording stopped.
Luca stared at Vanessa.
“Where did you get that?”
She held the device tightly.
“Michael gave it to me.”
Antonio stepped forward.
“Give it to me.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
“You don't understand what you're holding.”
“I understand perfectly.”
She pressed the button again.
Isabella's voice returned.
“My son, if you're hearing this, I need you to understand that the Moretti name was never meant to belong to you.”
A second recording began.
This time, the voice was male.
Deep.
Calm.
Unmistakably familiar.
Antonio.
“You were never supposed to survive.”
Luca looked at the old man.
Antonio's expression turned vicious.
“Turn it off.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No.”
The recording continued.
“You were born to the wrong woman, Luca. Your mother made a deal with the wrong man. And I spent thirty years cleaning up her mistakes.”
Then came a name.
“Victor Bellini.”
Daniel lowered his weapon.
“No.”
Antonio smiled bitterly.
“Now you understand.”
Luca turned toward Daniel.
“Who is Victor Bellini?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Your real father.”
The room fell silent.
Victor Bellini had been the most feared crime boss in the Midwest before disappearing thirty years earlier. His organization had collapsed after a violent internal war.
Officially, Victor had been killed.
But Antonio had spent decades searching for his body.
Luca felt sick.
“Why?”
Daniel answered.
“Because Isabella was Victor's wife. She had an affair with Antonio, and when she became pregnant, nobody knew which man was the father.”
Antonio laughed.
“Your mother wanted to protect you from Victor. She knew he would turn you into an heir.”
Daniel shook his head.
“She wanted to protect him from you.”
Luca looked at Antonio.
“You raised me as your son to hide the truth?”
“I raised you because you were useful.”
The words were simple.
Cruel.
Final.
Luca felt something inside him go quiet.
For thirty years, he had believed Antonio's approval was something he could earn through loyalty, strength, and obedience.
Now he understood.
He had never been loved by the man he called Father.
He had been trained.
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“Luca, there's something else.”
He turned.
“The recording contains a second file.”
She played it.
A woman began speaking.
“Luca, if you've reached this point, then Victor has probably found you.”
Elena gasped.
The voice belonged to Isabella.
“Your biological father isn't dead. He has been watching you since the day you were born. And he knows about Sofia.”
Luca looked at his daughter.
The child was holding Elena's hand.
“Where is he?” Luca asked.
Antonio smiled.
“Closer than you think.”
A car pulled into the driveway.
The headlights swept across the farmhouse windows.
Dominic moved toward the door.
“Boss, we've got another vehicle.”
Luca looked through the window.
A black limousine had stopped beside the road.
A man stepped out.
He was tall, silver-haired, and dressed in a dark overcoat.
He looked directly toward the house.
Luca felt his heart stop.
The man had his face.
Not Daniel's.
Not Antonio's.
His own.
The stranger walked toward the front door.
Antonio lowered his head.
For the first time in years, the old man looked afraid.
“Victor,” he whispered.
The door opened.
The stranger entered.
He looked at Luca.
Then at Sofia.
Then at Elena.
“I'm sorry,” he said quietly.
Luca raised his weapon.
“Who are you?”
The man gave a sad smile.
“Your father.”
Luca didn't lower the gun.
“Which one?”
Victor looked at Daniel.
“That's a fair question.”
He placed a photograph on the table.
It showed three men standing together outside a hospital thirty years earlier.
Antonio.
Daniel.
And Victor.
But the baby in Isabella's arms wasn't Luca.
It was Michael.
Luca looked at the picture.
Then at Michael's birth records.
Then at Antonio.
“What does this mean?”
Victor looked toward the door.
“Your mother gave birth to twins.”
Luca froze.
“Twins?”
Victor nodded.
“One was raised by Antonio. The other was taken away.”
Luca felt his stomach tighten.
“Where is the other child?”
Victor looked directly at him.
“Your brother.”
Antonio suddenly laughed.
“Now you've finally found the truth.”
He reached into his coat.
Dominic shouted.
But before anyone could move, Antonio fired.
The bullet struck Victor in the chest.
Elena screamed.
Luca rushed toward the fallen man.
Victor grabbed his wrist.
“Listen to me.”
His breathing was shallow.
“Michael isn't your brother.”
Luca stared at him.
Victor's eyes filled with tears.
“Michael is your twin.”
Then his hand slipped away.
May you like
And from outside came the sound of another gunshot.
