Chapter 8 - The Secret of the First Moretti

Antonio Moretti walked into the farmhouse as if he owned it.

He was older than Luca remembered from the photographs, but his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Unapologetic.

“Put the guns down,” Antonio said.

Nobody moved.

He glanced at Sofia.

“Hello, little princess.”

Elena pulled her daughter closer.

“Stay away from her.”

Antonio smiled.

“You sound just like Isabella.”

Luca stepped forward.

“Why did you raise me?”

Antonio looked at him.

“Because you were mine.”

“I'm Daniel's son.”

“Biologically, perhaps.”

Antonio removed a folded document from his coat.

“Your mother came to me when she was pregnant. She begged me to protect you from Daniel's enemies. I agreed.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That's not what happened.”

Antonio ignored him.

“Your mother loved me once. She knew I could give you power, money, and protection.”

“You killed her,” Luca said.

Antonio's expression barely changed.

“She died because she chose the wrong side.”

Elena's eyes widened.

“You murdered Isabella?”

Antonio looked at her.

“I didn't have to. She made the decision herself.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

“Enough.”

Antonio sighed.

“You always were a sentimental fool, Daniel.”

Then he looked at Luca.

“Do you know why I wanted you to marry Vanessa?”

“Because of the trust.”

“Partly.”

Antonio stepped closer.

“Your mother left something behind. Something worth more than every business, every bank account, and every piece of land in the Moretti empire.”

He pointed toward Sofia.

“The child.”

Luca's face hardened.

“Explain.”

“Isabella discovered that the Moretti fortune wasn't originally ours. The family business was built on stolen assets from another organization. She hid the original ownership documents before she died.”

Daniel nodded.

“She gave them to me.”

Antonio laughed.

“No. She gave them to your son.”

Luca looked at him.

“What?”

Antonio removed a small silver locket.

It was identical to the one Sofia wore.

He opened it.

Inside was a tiny photograph of Isabella.

Behind the photograph was a folded strip of paper.

“A code,” Antonio said. “A key to the original trust.”

Luca looked toward Sofia.

“Where did you get that?”

Antonio smiled.

“From her.”

Elena shook her head.

“You've been using a child to find money?”

“Money is only part of it.”

Antonio's expression darkened.

“The trust contains evidence that could destroy several powerful families. Politicians, judges, businessmen. Men who believe themselves untouchable.”

Michael's name appeared on Luca's phone.

An incoming call.

He answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

His brother's voice sounded strained.

“I'm at the harbor. I've got Rachel and Emma. Father is lying about everything.”

Luca looked at Antonio.

“Put him on speaker.”

Michael continued.

“There's something else. Vanessa's sister wasn't being held by Father. She was working with him.”

Vanessa went pale.

“What?”

“Rachel has been helping Antonio move the original documents. She was the one who arranged the hospital transfers.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. Rachel would never…”

A second voice interrupted.

Rachel.

“Vanessa, don't listen to him.”

Luca closed his eyes briefly.

The family secrets were multiplying faster than he could uncover them.

Michael spoke again.

“Luca, listen. Father has been looking for the original trust documents for thirty years. But he doesn't need the key anymore.”

“Why?”

“Because someone already opened the vault.”

A loud sound came through the phone.

Then Michael shouted.

“Rachel! Get down!”

The call ended.

Luca immediately moved toward the door.

Antonio stepped in front of him.

“Don't bother.”

Luca raised his weapon.

“Move.”

Antonio smiled.

“Your brother is a brave boy. But he never learned when to stop being useful.”

Before Luca could respond, Dominic rushed into the room.

“Boss, we've got an emergency.”

“What?”

He handed Luca a photograph.

It showed Michael lying on the harbor floor.

Beside him stood Rachel.

She was holding a gun.

And in the background, a black car was waiting with its rear door open.

Luca looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

But then he noticed something.

She wasn't looking at the photograph.

She was looking at Antonio.

And she was smiling.

“You're not going to get away with this,” she whispered.

Antonio's smile disappeared.

Vanessa reached into her wedding dress.

She pulled out a small recording device.

“I recorded everything.”

Antonio stared at her.

For the first time, the old man looked genuinely afraid.

Vanessa pressed a button.

A woman's voice filled the farmhouse.

Isabella Moretti.

“Antonio, if you're hearing this, then Luca has finally discovered the truth.”

A pause.

Then the recording continued.

“But there is one thing I never told him.”

Luca stepped closer.

His mother's voice trembled.

“Daniel isn't his biological father.”

Everyone froze.

Then Isabella said the words that changed everything.

“Luca is the son of the man Antonio has spent thirty years trying to kill.”
