Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Glass exploded across the room.

I pulled Clara to the floor.

Lily ducked behind the sofa.

My security team moved instantly.

The farmhouse erupted into chaos.

Not a war.

Not gunfire everywhere.

Something worse.

A coordinated attack.

Lights went out.

Doors slammed.

Car engines roared outside.

I grabbed Clara's hand.

"Stay with me."

"I can handle myself."

"I know."

I looked at her.

"That's why I'm afraid."

We moved through the rear hallway.

Lily followed.

Outside, the night was freezing.

We reached the vehicles.

Then Lily stopped.

"Bennett."

"What?"

She pointed.

A man stood beside the road.

Jonathan.

He wasn't holding a weapon.

He simply smiled.

"You have your father's eyes."

I stepped forward.

"You took my sister."

"I protected her."

"You destroyed our family."

"No."

He smiled.

"Your father did."

I wanted to attack him.

But Clara touched my arm.

"Don't."

Jonathan looked at her.

"You."

Clara stepped forward.

"What?"

"Your father ruined everything."

"He tried to stop you."

"He was a fool."

"You killed him."

Jonathan shook his head.

"No."

He looked at me.

"Ask your mother."

Then he disappeared into the darkness.

I knew immediately something was wrong.

We returned to Newport.

Mother was waiting.

She looked at Clara.

Then Lily.

And began to cry.

"You found her."

Lily ran into her arms.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Mother whispered.

"Your father wasn't the only person who survived."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

She looked toward the hallway.

A man entered.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Walking with a cane.

My breath stopped.

My father.

Richard Hale.

Alive.

He looked at me.

"Bennett."

I couldn't move.

He opened his arms.

I walked toward him.

Then I punched him.

Everyone froze.

My father staggered backward.

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I know."

"You let me mourn you."

"I know."

"You let me think Lily was dead."

"I was trying to protect you."

"You don't get to use that word anymore."

He lowered his head.

"I deserved that."

I wanted to hate him.

But then he said something that broke through my anger.

"I came back too late."

I looked at him.

"What happened?"

"Jonathan found me."

"Then why are you alive?"

"Because someone else saved me."

"Who?"

My father looked at Clara.

Her face changed.

"Your father."

Thomas Reed.

My father explained everything.

Thomas had discovered Jonathan's network.

He had helped Richard escape.

When Jonathan learned that Thomas had protected Richard, he framed Thomas as the traitor.

Thomas knew he might die.

So he left evidence with Clara.

For years, Clara had unknowingly carried the final piece of the puzzle.

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She laughed sadly.

"I didn't know what was true."

My father stepped closer.

"Clara, your father saved my life."

She wiped her eyes.

"He saved yours too."

Richard nodded.

"He gave you the chance to live."

Silence.

Then my mother spoke.

"Bennett."

I turned.

"You need to know one more thing."

"What?"

She looked at Clara.

"Your father didn't only save Richard."

She smiled faintly.

"He saved you."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Mother reached for my hand.

"Clara's father knew you were Jonathan's next target."

I looked at Clara.

She looked equally confused.

My mother continued.

"Thomas spent years protecting you from a distance."

The room went silent.

Then she added:

"And he asked me to protect his daughter."

I looked at Clara.

Everything suddenly made sense.

She hadn't entered my life by accident.

She had been part of the story long before I knew her name.

But there was something else I couldn't ignore.

I had started caring about her.

Not because my mother trusted her.

Not because her father saved mine.

Because she had become the first person in years who made me want to be something other than Bennett Hale, billionaire.

May you like

I wanted to be a man she could trust.

And that terrified me more than Jonathan ever had.
