Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN MY MOTHER FEARED

We returned to Newport before dawn.

My mother was awake.

She looked exhausted.

But when she saw the expression on my face, she knew.

"You found something."

I placed the photograph on her bedside table.

Her eyes widened.

"Where?"

"Father's old office."

She closed her eyes.

"Richard kept that room secret."

"From you?"

"No."

"Then why did you let me believe he was dead?"

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Because I was afraid."

I softened despite myself.

"Of what?"

"Of losing both of my children."

I sat beside her.

"Tell me the whole truth."

She looked at Clara.

"She deserves to hear it too."

Then Mother finally told us everything.

My father hadn't disappeared because of a business rival.

He had discovered a private network operating inside Hale Atlantic.

A network that laundered money, manipulated property deals, bribed officials, and destroyed competitors.

Martin Vale had been part of it.

But Martin wasn't the leader.

The leader was someone nobody suspected.

Someone who had access to the family.

Someone who had spent years pretending to protect us.

"Who?" I asked.

Mother's voice dropped.

"Jonathan Pierce."

I froze.

Jonathan Pierce was my godfather.

My father's closest friend.

He had raised me after my father disappeared.

He had been the chairman of Hale Atlantic's board for twenty years.

He had advised me.

Protected me.

Taught me business.

I had trusted him more than anyone.

Mother continued.

"Your father discovered Jonathan was behind the financial network."

"Why didn't he expose him?"

"Because Jonathan had Lily."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"She wasn't simply hidden."

Mother began crying.

"Jonathan took her."

I stood.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Mother!"

"He threatened your father."

Clara grabbed my arm.

"Bennett."

I pulled away.

"I need to find her."

Mother reached for my hand.

"There's more."

"What?"

"Jonathan isn't working alone."

She looked at Clara.

"Thomas Reed knew."

Clara went still.

"My father?"

"He tried to help Richard."

"Then why was he killed?"

Mother shook her head.

"He wasn't killed by Jonathan."

Silence.

"Then who?"

Mother whispered a name.

"Your father."

I stared at her.

"What?"

"Richard thought Thomas betrayed him."

Clara's face collapsed.

"No."

Mother cried.

"He was wrong."

I couldn't breathe.

"My father ordered Thomas's death?"

"No."

"Then why did you say—"

"Because Jonathan forged the evidence."

Clara stood.

"You knew?"

"I learned the truth too late."

Clara turned away.

I saw her shoulders shake.

I wanted to comfort her.

But I didn't know how.

Then my phone rang.

Jonathan.

I answered.

"Bennett."

His voice was calm.

"You've been asking dangerous questions."

"Where is Lily?"

Silence.

Then a soft laugh.

"You finally found the right question."

My grip tightened.

"If you've touched my sister—"

"I haven't."

"Where is she?"

"Safe."

"Prove it."

"Come alone."

"Where?"

"Your father's old boathouse."

The call ended.

Clara stepped toward me.

"I'm coming."

"No."

"You'll need someone who knows what you're looking for."

"I said no."

She looked directly into my eyes.

"You're not the only person whose family Jonathan destroyed."

I knew she was right.

We went together.

The boathouse was empty.

Except for a small wooden box.

Inside was a child's bracelet.

Engraved with one word.

LILY.

Beneath it was a note.

She has been watching you for years.

Then the lights went out.

Clara grabbed my arm.

A voice came from the darkness.

"Hello, Bennett."

I recognized it immediately.

Jonathan.

And then another voice spoke.

A woman's voice.

Older.

Shaking.

"Brother?"

My heart stopped.

The lights came back on.

A woman stood across the room.

She had my mother's eyes.

My father's smile.

And the same small scar above her eyebrow that I remembered from childhood.

I couldn't speak.

She whispered my name.

"Bennett."

My knees almost gave out.

"Lily?"

May you like

She smiled through tears.

"You're so tall."
